    Default Extreme cramps

I'm just curious on what everyone else with extreme cramps like myself (for the 1st two days) takes for pain relief? What I am doing now every month is not good because I end up taking waaaay more than the recommended dosages (advil liquid gels-for faster relief-only lasts 2 hours & midol extra strength, only lasts for about 4-5 hours). So I end up taking too much and feel drugged, not good.

Would a prescription pain reliever or muscle relaxer be better? I don't have a doctor so I wouldn't know how to go about getting them..

I used to to the point of being bed ridden for the first two days of my period. A chiropractor fixed it for me - just one tiny adjustment 20 years ago now! It might be worth checking that out. Its not the usual spinal adjustment, its just some tiny thing to one side of the pelvic area. If its out of place it makes the uterus sit crookedly and causes alot of extreme pain for the first day or two of bleeding.

I do take prescription ibuprofin for my cramps, but for the record, advil is the same thing. Just take 800 mg. of it, and your getting prescription strength. A heating pad works well, also wearing socks all the time. for some reason, keeping my feet warm helps my cramps.
An then theres the cure all for anything..nyquill. When in pain...sleep it off!

Ibuprofen isn't strong enough 1 regular dose only lasts 2 hours. I need something to work fast and last all day

If I try to sleep it off I will still feel my cramps in my sleep, they'll just get incorporated into my dreams somehow and i'll wake myself up because I still feel like shit.

I overdose on Ibuprofen... not good, and it barely even works now.. I'm gonna start taking birth control at the end of the month. Besides the not getting pregnant benefit, it really made my cramps bearable when I was on it before.

^yeah that's prob. why it doesn't work on me either

b.c. is awesome for helping with cramps but can't take it because I haven't quit smoking yet and I don't want to gain the weight again (was on it before)

I remember one time the pain was so bad that I went to ER...the nurse suggested that I start to take Evening Primose Oil....it really does help with cramping.

Other than that I took Tylenol 3's....hate that time of the month!!!

    Hope you feel better soon!

Aleve is the OTC painkiller that works best for my cramps, and I get really, really bad ones. I also find that avoiding caffeine and alcohol before and during the first day of my period helps. Once the cramps start I try to get some exercise even though all I feel like doing is lying on the couch. Even a leisurely walk around my neighborhood can really help.

Ponstan is another anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen (advil) or naproxen (aleve) that is often prescribed for major cramps.

I feel like going to the hospital every time that happens, but don't want to look like a huge baby-my b/f says to get over it but he doesn't realize how bad they hurt

Naproxen does not work on me for some reason. Also, I started taking evening primrose oil last month and come this time it didn't help at all.

I guess I'll just have to find a doctor and get something prescribed to me.

I used to use Soma or Percocet. My cramps were so bad, I would faint in public- so I wouldn't leave the house unless I *had* to. It comes and goes- it got better during my mid 20's, but now it's back.

Right now, I take some ativan and sleep through my period.

some months are definitely worse than others... as far as actual cramp relief, nothing touched nurofen (ibuprofen) however it hurt my stomach so bad that i was killing one evil for another. paracetamol, while pretty piss-weak on the pain, doesn't hurt my stomach as much.

i also found ponstan worked well without cutting up my gut as badly as some of the others. it seemed a little milder for me than Naprosyn, which ended up hurting my tummy more than Nurofen.

in the end, a good old-fashioned hot pack and lying in bed is all i can do on the really bad ones.

aussiepunkshocker... do you get any pain at all now?

Nope - the pain never came back like before. I had a little bit of mild pain come back a while ago, but my current chiropractors fixed it again so no pain at all. Fabulous! (-:

Naproxen doesn't work? I get really bad cramping and nausea, the only thing that helps is a boiling hot bath and a bottle of aleve. I used to get prescription naprosen from my doc but since Aleve is the same I just started using it instead. I have to take a ton but my doc said that if she gives me anything stronger I'd feel the woozie drugged effects which I avoid. Aleve is the best thing I've ever tried but if it doesn't work for you I don't know what to say. I'm sorry babe, that sucks!

Naproxen Sodium is the only thing that helps my "Hell Cramps" Midol does nothing
