Default What's the ideal number of crunches to do each day?

My stomach has always been my problem area, and I'm trying to firm it up. Now with lifting weights, I know you're not supposed to work the same muscle groups 2 days in a row-you're supposed to give them at least a day in between to rest and repair. But, I heard it's ok to do abdominal exercises every day. Is this true?

What is a good number of crunches to do each day? I just bought this ball to do crunches on, and so far it seems to be working out better than normal crunches. And yes, I know crunches alone won't tone your belly. I know you have to do cardio and eat a healthy diet, which I am also working on. Thanks in advance.

Stomach muscles are the same as any other muscle in your body. If you can do 100 crunches a day, you're not doing effective crunches.

The rule of thumb is that the exercise should be hard enough to only get around 3 sets of 10-12 reps.

COULD you do 100 crunches a day? Sure...but, shit...what a waste of time.

^^ I second Venus. also, many ppl do crunshes WAY TOO FAST. Slow down, really engage your core, and you won't be able to do a hundred.

I dunno, didn't Britney Spears go on some talk show and talked about doing 1000 crunches a day and she had an amazing body. Personally, I do around 300 crunches a day, about 4 times a week (I do different kinds) and it's helping out my stomach. I could never do just 30 and I know I'm doing them right because I've worked with different trainers in gyms in the past.

Doing different kinds of crunches in high reps such as 15-20 and 3 sets is fine. Doing one type of crunch that only works one of the muscles every time you do an ab workout is not effective. You can do crunches everyday just work a different set of abdominal muscles each day. Taking it slow and concentrating on squeezing the abs works much better.

I have found that, for women, genetics is the biggest factor is developing a flat stomach. because of that, some women will never have a flat stomach following a typical regimen (i.e. a clean diet, an hour of cardio daily, 3 sets of perfect form crunches).

That was me. I ate nothing but lean meats, lots of veggies, some fruits, did 60 minutes of cardio daily and half hour of weight training, then ab work...and I still had some pouch.

Now, included with the above routine, I do about 500 crunches every day (various varieties, standard crunches, leg lifts, bicycles, oblique twists, etc) and I have a perfectly flat stomach(and a 6pack si starting to develop!!!!!!!)

As always when doing crunches, form is the most important...most people "curl" up, brining their chin almost to their chin. NO! Try staring up at the celing, an dimagine holding a grapefruit between your chest and chin for maximum efficiency
