Default computer question. I'm hearing bells

Recently every few minutes I'm hearing a bell sound then my computer will freeze for just a secound or two then I will hear another bell sound and everything will be ok. The first few times it happened right after an advast update, but that has not been the case latey. I did do a virus scan came up empty. I run win xp.

P.S. I did down load fvi player software about a day or two before this started to happen.

Search google for "Hijack this" if you post the output of the log here I can help.

    Probably a worm though.

Something is updating in the background and failing, these tend to be ad applications.

    Ok Bro,

Go download "HiJack This!" 1.99.1 google it

Once open, do a system scan only, then click "config" then click "Generate Startuplist Log" click both check boxes before doing so

It'll post everything in a notepad file, copy it and paste it here or in PM. Whichever.

Thanks everyone for the help. I think Space_Cadet may be right. I do have a USB mouse, last time my computer froze I was able to use keyboard command on task manager while my cursor was still stuck.

Mast I did download hijackthis and I do appreciate your help. I will try different mouse first if that does not help then I will send you startup list log( its very long, but I guess you know that)

My computer has been freezing a lot lately but with no bells. My brother thinks I need a new harddrive. I paid for the four years of on-site next day support from Dell but he basically called them and made some shit up to get them to send me a new hard drive. The on-site tech support from dell is a joke.

on my optical mouse, it was easy to tell it was failing. the light at the bottom would go out. plugging it into the back via the usb to ps2? adapter worked for a little while. to enter the land of superstition I removed the background image on the desktop and the problem went away. one other solution found when researching problem was a powered usb hub.

...to rule out the drive causing the bell/beep, run HDTUNE to see the drives health status, performance and temperature its running at (the health status is in the bottom right on the health tab).
