    Lactose Intolerant

I drank a glass of vitamin D milk last night, and got a distended belly and some gassiness. Mmmm, sexy. Tonight, same thing. We baked chocolate chip cookies so I wanted the milk (damn you Jenny, its all your fault! )

I don't know if I'm lactose intolerant. I usually drink soy milk if anything. I just like it. This only seems to happen if I have an entire glass of milk. I don't have any problems from yogurt, ice cream, cheese, etc....

But I also have been pigging out all weekend, so I'm not sure. What's the best way to test this? Just drink a glass of milk with nothing else on an empty stomach and see what happens? Its not painful, but it wasn't fun having to sneak into the bathroom all night to take care of business (I was staying at a friend's house) Suggestions?

Haha your comment about having to sneak to the bathroom because you was staying at a friends house made me giggle I have soo been there lol

Could it be that the upset stomach was due to pigging out hun? and then drinking the milk on top of that..... I duno I get like that with milk sometimes too.

Maybe your cow's milk intolerant (a lot of people are) which is totally different from lactose intolerant. You can take a lactose intolerant test if you wanted to know for sure. It's a simple [fasting] blood test.

If you are indeed lactose intolerant, you do not, as most people think, actually have to stay away from dairy- you simply need to take the enzyme lactase (an easy pill- GNC sells it as dairy digestant, i believe) when you have dairy products.

yes, it could be cow's milk, or the fact that a large glass certainly contains more lactose than does a bit of cheese/scoop of ice cream. try seraya's test... or, if this seems to happen EACH time you drink milk, try drinking Lactaid milk (for lactose intolerant people) or taking a lactase pill- if no upset stomach, there's your answer (rather non-medical testing scenario, but hey, you're asking strippers. haha)

dooood I have the same problem! Milk makes my tummy hurt and gives me the runs but other dairy is ok. I swear it's just regular milk. I buy Lactaid.

I'm sorry. But I gave you advice for cookies - I would never recommend milk. Honestly, I think milk is a little disgusting. Cow juice. Gross.

Doctors can test for lactose intolerance by using the hydrogen breath test. Normally very little hydrogen gas is detectable in the breath. However, undigested lactose in the colon ferments (breaks down) and produces various gases, including hydrogen.

If your doctor decides to give you a hydrogen breath test, you'll be asked to blow into a tube for a beginning sample. You'll then swallow a drink or eat a food with lactose in it, wait a while, and breathe into the tube again. The hydrogen level of the sample is then checked.

I'm "lactose" intolerant...its not fun. I can handle yogurt, cheese, etc.

I get raw milk. I have no problems with it. In the homogenization/pasturization of the store bought milk, it kills all of the enzymes/bacteria in the milk...which makes it harder for the human body to digest. Yogurt/cheese/etc. are all fermented milk products and so people don't usually have the same issues with them. With milk, it can really cause havoc on your system.

Why take a lactose pill when you can just get raw milk? Its better for you, anyways.

I use something called "Once Daily Lactose Intolerance Therapy" by Digestive Advantage. You can find it in any Walgreens or CVS. I switched to this after I found out about my LI, and tried Lactaid milk, but thought it was gross. As an avid dairy lover, I searched for a better solution and this was it. It's better than any other LI pills because instead of taking a pill before you have any dairy (which can have you taking pills all day long if you love dairy like me) you only have to take two in the morning. I even take them WITH normal milk and I'm fine.

They come in a box of 32 caplets for around $10. Sooo worth it. Only thing to tell you is that the first two days you might have marked gas and bloating, but after that, you're home free and enjoying your foods again. I usually get every damn side effect, and I only got a little bloating, nothing unmanageable. And it's also drug free. Try it out.

Here's the website for it too:

I'm lactose intolerant. Maybe it's mental, but just the thought of milk makes me gag. However, occasionally I'll crave a McFlurry from McDonald's and I'll get a horrible stomach ache after eating it. Normally I drink soy milk. I don't have a problem with cheese or yogurt. I think I read that cheese and yogurt aren't the same as milk or icecream. Something about them is different so they aren't as hard on you if you are lactose intollerant, but don't ask me to explain. I just read that a few years ago and find that I can eat cheese and yogurt as long as it's not a lot.

^^^I'm the same. I became lactose intolerant a year and a half ago, right when I suddenly had IBS (it really came out of nowhere, and has not gone away since). For whatever reason, I can sometimes handle cheese, and I can sometimes handle a latte, though soy lattes are better. But straight milk is the worst...I used to love a bowl of cereal, and now that slays me (unless with soy milk, but it's not the same). I read that the sugar in the milk that's hard to digest is less present in cheese and yogurt, or something...and that having something like cheese in small amounts with other food is sometimes ok.

I like cereal with soy milk. Maybe it's just because I haven't had regular milk in years though, but I love soy milk.

^^yeah, I think it's because I have wheat and corn intolerances these days too (really takes the fun out of my old bowl of shreddies and minnie wheats).

Katrine, I'd try the milk first thing in the morning, that way you would know if it's the milk bothering you. I drink almond milk and like it better now than cow's milk.

you might also just be plain allergic to milk. allergic and intolerant are different, as one can be taken care of with a pill as stated ^^ but allergies are not so simple. and if they were i'd be one happy camper.

    Love it!
