Default Are you giving this season?

I know people should give year round but its a great time for giving to others less fortunate during the holidays too. Does anyone plan to give something extra to people who have less this season?

I always like to go buy a bunch of toys and donate them all to toys for tots. Plus, I get a nice high from buying toys for kids that arent mine and that I miss buying them for myself. Maybe I'll do something different this year.

ill be in thailand, i was considering going to the local orphanage or something for the day and helping out, but decided getting drunk on vodka jelly shots would be more constructive, considering thailand is predominatly buddhist.

ill donate my time on another day.less relevant to either 'religion'

Well, don't know if I'll be able to help out or not this holiday season. I'll try to do what I can, I have already donated money to scholarship organizations so that some college students have the opportunity for more payment options. So I guess that has been my contribution thus far.

My club has a toys for tots promotion every year. I also participate in the one at our local mall.

I just can't stand to see kids going without any time of the year, but especially at Christmas. How do you tell your child that Santa didn't come because you're poor? Heartbreaking.

I was poor growing up so one year my mom had to go get a food box from the food donation place. They ran out of toys for girls and all I got was a batman. That was the suckiest christmas by far. Seven year old girls dont want a batman action figure. I hope no other little girl gets a dumb boy toy they didnt want for christmas ever.

Very true mermaidnz. Kids in other less fortunate countries are just happy youre playing kickball with them in the unpaved road. You make me think about my upcoming trip to Thailand in april and spending time with those kids.

This in no way mitigates the sad Christmas you had to go through TM. The fact is that you live in a country of privilege and your neighbors could be getting a whole bunch of toys and you got nothing. How do you explain to a child that Santa skipped you?

Keep that sad memory in your heart and use it to make sure no other little girl goes through what you did.

I feel for the unfortunate in other countries too but I tend to give more to those closer to home. And I'm sorry that you ever had to be that little girl yourself, TM.

I give to CARE and Oxfam every month. That's a great way to help all year long. They take your gifts and give you feedback on the projects they fund. It's good stuff. www.care.org www.oxfamamerica.org

Thanks Dylan Angel. It was just my personal experience relating to how some other kids might feel when their only gift on christmas was a toy that didnt fit them. I hope no one takes it as a pity party - I just relate is all. I was lucky enough to have gotten a good meal or few because the turkey was big enough for several meals. Some kids dont even get a warm meal. Id love to give some of my time this season as well.

We normally do. Every year, I grab 2 cards off of those gift trees (one for a girl, one for a boy), and buy gifts for them. This year however, we won't be able to help out. Things are tight with the move and all. I'll pick it up again next year though.

I will, though I'm not sure exactly what I'll do yet. Something for toys for tots or something of the sort. We also have a festival of trees here every year, and each tree is sold to benefit needy families/kids. Some trees sell for thousands of dollars.

I cant afford to give anything but time. If there is any volunteering to be done, I'm there.

That's a good point. I'm normally very 'meh' about Toys for Tots because it supports the idea that you're not OK without 'things' (yes I know the kiddies don't see it that way), but I like your view on it DylanA. I'll send out some (educational!) kids toys this year.

Will be doing stripathons...we do them every year, I think the charity that accepts our money is actually Toys for Tots! or it might be a food bank, I forget.

I gave to the Canadian Lung Foundation xmas appeal (where they give you those xmas seals....like Easter seals).

    That's probably it for me.

I give regardless of the time of year and if I do give it is to an animal related organisation. I may do something for the local shelter (AWL QLD) or Wildlife Warriors or WWF .. or ?? I dunno. I'll just do what I feel inspired to do that day. I will have Christmas Day free so why not?
