    Default Hair growing in funny

I tried googling this and got a lot of information on terriers.
A bunch of my hair is growing in weird and wiry; most of my hair is very thin and soft. I suspect that the hairs that are growing in funny are one's I've pulled out. (This is actually exacerbating my pulling problem as well). I thought I might be prematurely greying, but I don't see any grey roots (and I've got about 1.5 inches in root). So -
    a) anyone have any ideas on what the hell is up with these weird hairs that don't belong on my head? (and are slowing driving me crazy with their weirdness and driving me to more and more intense pulling exercises)
    b) is there anything that combat this?

Hm, I have no idea. It could be hormonal.

I've had kinky hairs my whole life, they just come in super kinky, grow fast, and start relaxing at about 3-4 inches. I think their new hairs just starting out, so I leave them alone, and my hair gets thicker.

BTW, their nearly impossible to streighten out, so I just use a little hairspray wiped onto the hair specifically or a dab of hair wax to blend it in.

I had a problem similar to yours when I was in early adolescence. I finally found out that my hair-pulling addiction had a name: Thrictotillomania (sp?). Although it sounds like you are pulling them out for a reason.. to rid yourself of the kinky ones. I would keep pulling my hair out strand by strand, it was a compulsion, and I didn't stop until I noticed I had pulled enough to make a noticable bald spot on the back of my head and forced myself to quit.

Can't explain why they would come in looking kinky/thicker, but hair texture can change with age.

I also knew a chick who had the depo shot (hmm or was it Norplant?) and lost a lot of hair and when it grew back, it was super-curly, where she had straight hair before.
    Strange.

Av - I've posted before of the tricotillamania; part of the ritual for me is seeking out "unusual" hairs. (It was very weird when I found out there was a name for it, because I googled and realized that a whole bunch of other people did, step by exact step, something I thought was an entirely indiosyncratic bad habit). Part of the "process" is to locate weird hairs on your head or body, pinch them between your nails and draw the shaft repeatedly through your fingers, pull them out by the root and then (I'm sorry everyone) draw the shaft in between your lips or teeth. Some people do it differently, but that process is apparently very common to a lot of tricotillamaniacs (see? It seems really idiosyncratic, right?). I suspect that the hairs growing in like this are one's I've pulled in the past; but it makes it all but impossible resist pulling them again. (which I'm sure you get). I can't quit. I'm weak. I tried snappign elastics, I tried holding my breath. I can't even stop biting my nails. And it is very hard to explain to people that it is a compulsion - that is, it is, by definition, really, really, really hard to stop.

Susie - it is nice to know that if I manage to let them grow in a little they might get normal.

^Oh I absolutely understand the madness. I had a thing with hair follicles. I'm still somewhat of a picker. I have lots of weird body habits/ compulsions.

I think the reason that I stopped doing the hair pulling is that this was around the time I began smoking cigarettes and experimenting with drugs.

I've accepted that there will always be this underlying OCD with me, it just manifests itself in different ways. Right now I've been eating compulsively b/c I haven't smoked or drank in a couple of days...

Oh my that sounds like me, as I chomp down on my blueberry muffin. I'm sick so I can't drink or smoke and I want to get better, but food can't really take the place of my wine. : (

My ex boyfriend had that with his brows. When he got stressed he would pick at 'em obsessively. I'd try to distract him to keep him off the offending subject. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.

As for the texture. That's happened to me. I sstarted out with kinky hair and have been growing a wavy corkscrew pattern. I don't know why. I think it's hormonal because my boobs blew up but I wasn't pregnant. Maybe it was the beef in my diet. I hadn't eaten it in 5-6 years then BOOM, I went back. Go figure.

So. It finally happened. I have a visible bald spot - like my part looks... unnaturally wide. It is not pretty looking. I'm running out to buy hairitamins, but I would like a quick fix. I don't know how hair extensions work - can they be used to fill in spaces like that? I'm not sure what else to do - I mean, the hairdresser can't put pieces back on.

It depends on where the bald spots are-how far back it starts, for example. I had a friend who had a car accident and was thrown onto the pavement face first. Lost a lot of her front hair, where the bangs were. She got pinchbraided extensions that started further back and covered the front a la Betty Page bangs. You could have them change your part and fill in where they can. What kind of extensions work depends on your hair type-I had decent luck with the pinchbraids-

But my hair is pretty thin and they didn't stay in as long as they should have.

If it's your part line that looks unnatural, why not as a quick fix, switch your part to the other side?

I don't know if hair extensions would be best to cover up hair loss or bald spots since they too can cause hair loss. Well, clip ins might. I would get a pack and just play around with them and see what you can do. But, I'm sure a hair dresser would have some other good advice.
I've had pinch braids too...They completely messed my hair up. But then again, I have thin hair that gets damaged pretty easy.

Apparently hypnosis can really help compulsions. I haven't tried it but I've thought about it. My bikini line gets red and bumpy when I yank those hairs too much. But it's not as life affecting. For real, some people use hypnosis to quit smoking and it works spookily well.

    Absolutely. I did it.

Ack! It definitely depends on your hair. I think clip ins and glue ins would cause the most damage, but YMMV.

Also, since I'm not the only one pimping hypnosis-it totally works on phobias and compulsions and the like. It can take some time, especially if it's a long term habit, or it can take one session. Depends. But it works.

I used to do that with my eyelashes.

Is there a chance that you're entering early menapause? Or pregnant?

I think you could cover it with clip in hair extensions. They're "supposed" to be clipped in from front to back along the sides, but you can do them from side to side across the top of your head... that might do it? I'm sure they do damage your hair, tho.

Energy psych is really good for compulsions. It's just tapping, and it would only take 10-15 minutes. Hypnosis is also good, but so much depends on the individual practitioner, where energy psych is more standardized.

For work, or everyday life? If for work, I think the easiest thing is probably a wig. I know a ton of girls that dance with them...even if guys know it's fake, they don't care.

Plus ,then you can yank on the wig hairs instead of your own

Well, I've moved my part for now (thank you for that simple solution, by the way) - I might try hypnosis or energypsych (if I can work out what that is) for a long term solution. Lena - it isn't a hormonal thing; it's a problem I've had for a while, it's just much more there right now.

Hair growing in wiry--I find that new hairs grow in wiry for the first couple inches and then straighten out. If you can do this without triggering yourself, why not TRIM the hairs an inch or so to alleviate the wiriness? They'll keep growing and eventually the wiriness will even out.

Another thing you can do to alleviate the part/bald issue is to comb your hair back so there is no part, and fix it on the top of your head with a barrette.
