One more to add from me:
"Paint It Black" by Rolling Stones/Inkkubus Sukkubus
WORD, Dylan. On both. Also on the Clash! To get totally PoMo on you, how about my beloved Mike Ness (of Socal Distortion, but going solo) covering the Clash's cover of "I Fought the Law"?Originally Posted by DylanAngel
Mmm, speaking of Social D, LOVE their version of "Backstreet Girl" by the Stones. What else . . . I'm always into "Brickhouse" as covered by Rob Zombie. Snake River Conspiracy's version of the Cure's "Lovesong" rules.
In my very humble opinion, though this is breaking away from strip club-apropos material, there are two Leonard Cohen covers that are absolutely transcendent: "Famous Blue Raincoat" as done by Tori (she's a master of inventive covers), and of course, the ultimate: Jeff Buckley doing "Hallelujah". :::quiver::: Wanna make me instantly melt? Play that.
Fun thread! I'm sure I'll think of more tomorrow.
"Before I conceived you, I wanted you. Before you were born, I loved you. Before you were here an hour, I would die for you. This is the miracle of life." -- Maureen Hawkins
"I just can't get over how much babies cry. I really had no idea what I was getting into. To tell you the truth, I thought it would be more like getting a cat." -- Anne Lamott
Oh, and I could slap myself for not IMMEDIATELY posting Social D's "Ring of Fire"!!! I even dance to it on two of my set mixes. One of my all-time faves.

OMG I dance to so many covers... it usually gets me more tips on stage from the old guys who recognize their music redone..
A perfect circle- Imagine
Fatboy Slim-Magic Carpet Ride
also Cake's I will survive (saw it above)
Manson & Depeche Mode both cover Tainted Love
those are the best...
Save Ferris-Come on Eileen
Save Ferris- Can't Take my Eyes of of You
Lords of Acid-Lady Marmelade
Reel Big Fish- Video Killed the Radio Star (best of anyone who covers that- people LOVE it- radiohead's cover doesn't match up
Reel Big Fish- 99 Red Balloons
System of a Down- Metro (played only when club is empty and or tons of 19 yr olds around stage... great cover)
I play a techno version of Bach's Pachabel's canon- occasionlly someone will recognize that and go "huh, a stripper who knows classical music..."
and for Christmas, I will be playing the Transiberian Orchestra&metallica's collaborations of traditional stuff. I LOVE covers!!!
then again, I grew up with Me First and the Gimme Gimme's.... a punk rock band who has about 4 cd's of pure covers... and they are amazing... haha
also, Manic Hispanic, for anyone who knows about latin culture (I've only learned a bit since moving out to cali...)
like, the whole soundtrack to Not Another Teen Movie (don't laugh)
ETA: and '97 Bonnie and Clyde (orig Eminem) and Enjoy The Silence (orig Depeche Mode) by Tori Amos

I prefer Lacuna Coil's version of "Enjoy The Silence"
Um..
These don't have to be SC playable, right? Kthen. Some are, some aren't.
-Bigod 20-"Like A Prayer"
-Rammstein-"Stripped" (only the "Heavy Mental Mix", personally)
-Neuroticfish- "They're Coming To Take Me Away"
-Dead Kennedys-"I Fought The Law"
-KMFDM- "Boots" (Bombs Remix)- Their cover of the Nancy Sinatra tune. Hot.
-Coil-"Who By Fire?" (Leonard Cohen)
-Coil-"Tainted Love" -This version is by far my fave cover of this song. It's totally spooky and unplayable, but it fits the song. The video won awards.
-Rx (Ritalin, technically, which is Ogre from Skinny Puppy and Martin Atkins from Killing Joke/Ministry/Pigface/Damage Manual/etc etc)-Anyway, they did a cover of Syd Barrett's "Scarecrow" that was totally unexpected, and also a cover of Petula Clark's "Dowtown". Ogre also covered Madonna's "Borderline".
Urrrr. I could go on all night. But no. G'nite.
waffles are just pancakes with little squares on them.

Mr. C- I am downloading the KMFDM boots & material girl covers right now- no idea they existed.... thank you ever so much!!!!

AFI covered NIN's Head Like A Hole, and I like it A LOT better.![]()
Oooh, yes yes yes! I like most of the covers she does on the Strange Little Girls album (though not everything - her "Reign in Blood" by Slayer was just . . . unnecessary). In particular for me, her "Real Men" by Joe Jackson and "Time" by Tom Waits. I can be in a perfectly happy mood, humming along in life just fine, and all I need to hear is the first line of "Time" to start me tearing up. Plus the album's photography of her is just priceless.Originally Posted by Emily
I knew I'd think of more in the morning! GENUIS ON EVERY LEVEL: Johnny Cash covering Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat".

I must agree on your level of genius RW! As you can probably tell, anything Johnny Cash makes me squirmy in the nether regions....yummy!Originally Posted by RoseWhite

I get really bitchy about covers of Tom Waits songs, but I will agree that Tori did a nice version. She performed it live on one of the latenight shows when the cd first came out, and did an excellent job. (Speaking of which, Tom's new triple-cd comes out next week, wheee!!!! He's gonna be on Letterman, and also the Daily Show. I digress....)
And yeah, Cash's cover of "The Mercy Seat" was quite swanky. I liked most of his covers..."Hurt", "Rusty Cage", "Personal Jesus", they were all excellent. That video for "Hurt" is beautiful and so so sad.
