Default please help whoever knows car mechanics

I recently bought a used car. Five weeks ago to be exact. Its a 03 infiniti I 35. The last week its been making a really bad pingy noise in the engine. Its still under waarranty for 2500 more miles. So I took it to infiniti they say they hear nothing so I get a trans flush and an poil change. As soon as I drive away I hear the noise so I call and they say bring it back the next day and they will have someone drive with me and listen. Also since theve donre the tranny flush the car is shifting hard. So anyway the guy goes with me and says yeah thats a bad gas knock. Iam like are you sure its not the lifters. He says no I can do a flush or you can run premium for a while sine you just bought it and we dont know what the other people used and hope it goes away. Hope it goes away, the fucking car sounds like its falling apart. oh and he says it can damage the engine. What shpuld I do take it back to were I bought it if it doesnt. I dont want a car thats sounding like its falling apart or will this go away. Please whoever knows mechanics. I just speant all this money on this car and I am scared the sound wont go away or the dealer wont do anything to help. Take the car back or whatever.

Is it a clacking - like.. clackclack ( constant noise ) or just a random every now and again ping or bang.

If it's the clacking, you could have a bent push rod ( has to do with making the the engine go, if it goes bad, you stop ) or it could be that the poor thing is complaining and in need of oil. Oil makes everything run smoothly so none of the little metal parts grind together. grinding is bad..

Personally, I'd go back to that place where I bought the hunk of junk and tell them to take it back and or fix it or give you another one. be loud, be obnoxious - nothing worse than having some crazy stripper chick go off.

Its a pingy clangy noise not always when I first ecellerate(sp?) and when I go around 45 ish. Infiniti looked up the records on the car and said the previous owner maintained the vehicle. The car is not a junk. Its near mint condition and close to 40k brand new. Iam pissed I spent all this money and the way this mechanic made it sound like well hopefully high test gas will fix it. I mean hoe tempermental can the car be I never put premium in my lexus and it never pinged and it was 10 years old not 3.

I just had a similar problem after having my breaks done. Turned out the break pads they used were defective, and were seperating right down the middle.

Fawn did it sound like it was coming from the engine? I have heard gas knocks before and bad lifters and the mechanic said it was a gas knock and sounds like it to me?

Keep going back to the dealership. If you bug them enough, they usually give in, but you have to be persistant. Does it still have a warrenty, or an extended warranty? If so, they might be trying to give you the brush off until your warranty expires. Then when that happens they aren't responsible for fixing it for free anymore and YOU have to pay. Common scam dealerships do.
EDIT: Saw you still have warranty. 2500 is getting down to the line, so my theory is a very real possibility. Do NOT let this car go out of warranty until it is fixed-they're hoping it does!

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean that I had the similar problem of hearing a knock from the engine and them not fixing it.... mine was clearly something to do with the breaks. there would be a knocking when I would push on the pedel.... a knocking that I could feel in my foot when I would break. Then I took it back and they said they fixed it.... but they didn't.... and I didn't tak eit back for a while, but then it started to sound like a mouse when I would excelerate to a slow speed, or take a corner. I took it to another mechanic who showed me whet it was by sticking a razorblade between the pads ( there is not supposed to be any space.)

So, I took it back to the first place and told them that the break check place told me my pads were seperating ( forgot to say he showed me himself) and they to9ok my car in and said nothing was wrong, and there was nothing to fix, I told them my pads were under warrenty and to replace them anyway. Well, the sound an dthumping has completely stopped. Nothing to fix, yeah right.

Here's the first reply I got to the thread I started for you:

    Jay-
As long as the problem is documented PRIOR to the warranty expiring, they're liable. But... they're most likely correct in that it's knock from shitty fuel. Has she been putting 87 octane in it?

It's just a glorified Nissan Maxima, so it shouldn't NEED 93... but it never hurts.

I wouldn't fuck around w/ the transmission, though. Keep taking it back until it's right or replaced."

    Talesin-
"Document it. Get it in writing that the problem exists, and the mileage/date, as well as how much warranty is remaining. They're almost certainly trying to BS her into waiting until the warranty expires."

    69Cougar-
"I would also reccomend that she get some kind of undeniable proof that she brought the car there, under warranty, to have it checked out. Just in case something goes bad, she can come back and say YOU GOTTA FIX IT.

Personally though I would take the car back where I got it and get a full refund."

Yeah I know how they dont want to fix it since its under manufacturers warranty. Iam thinking of extending with someone other than infiniti I think I will get better results with fixing anyone else agree? I have fueled the car 3 times the first with middle grade the second with premium and alas I did put regular the last time. The car did not make this noise the first 4 weeks I had it. I did some looking and found that bad gas could make a knock. Iam not sure what the people prior used. I wouldnt think 1 tank of unleaded would do that but I am not an infiniti expert. Couldnt this be easily remedied. I love the car and it drives excellent. The noise does not effect the performance. Iam more or less worried of larger problems occuring, also who wants to drive around with a horendous noise.

Bad gas? Christ on a bicycle, I haven't heard that in years.

Sounds like a real mechanical problem--like Crow said, could be a bad push rod or the valves are banging, neither of which is good. If you're shifting hard post-flush, something's not right about that transmission.

Well would a bad push rod sound like an engine knock? Would it just make a noise or would it make the car run different or ruff? I can just feel the transmission shift were as before I couldnt nothing major but that why I bought an I 35 because there trannys shift so smooth. I am more worried about the other.

Engines "knocks" can also be caused by piston slap, as Chevy Silverados tended to have.

Still, it is cheap and easy to rule out. Something you can do own your own. Generally shaking/vibrating after the engine has been turned off, is more likely a sign of bad gas.

I'm sure they do not want to support under warranty.

You will hear it as a loud constant clacking .. repetitious, and when you push on the gas it will get louder and faster. It will sound like something in there is about to fly out.

Please., take a man with you because we all know how mechanics try to scam the ladies. Believe me, I know. Thats why I know so much about cars.. well that and I pay dues to GirlyGirl racing..

PM me if you need to, I can call somebody and ask them what they think.

Theres this stuff you can put in your gas tank to filter crap out, clean the tank and what not. I got a new car about a mounth ago, and my step brother did added the stuff to the tank, added essential fluids, changed oil and oil filter, and put air in the tires. Not only did my clicking/bump when I excellerated fast go away, it now has WAY better gas mileage.
Does any one know what the stuff is to add to the gas tank? It's near the oil in walmart...

Yeah, but it does seem like it's a tranny problem. The gas could have perpetuated the problem, but it all comes down to the tranny.

...then i doubt its a valve, lifter, push rod or piston slap.

...this supports everyones assessment that that it is gas knock. Run premium gas which is higher octane and see if it helps. You can then "try" to run the walmart gas additive to "control the burn" if you wish but i dont think its necessary. Have your mechanic check the cars handeling of the engine timing, in other words, check the cars computer and its associated parts that advance and retard the timing while driving (including the timing belt).

Gas knocking isnt going to destroy your engine overnight, it will last months if not years with some knocking(come back to the mid 70's with me my children and watch all the high compression 60's engines retard their timing to try and run unleaded low octane for years. Oh for the days when 103 octane leaded ethyl was premium...ha what a trip!)

As far as the transmission, they can adjust the computer to control the shifting better. In the 60's/70's, pre-computer, it was done by adjusting a bolt on the transmission which adjusted the band clearence.

My wifes truck has had a spark knock in it sense it was new. When we put 87 octane in it, it will knock while going up hill or while in overdrive. Put octane boost in it or just fill it up with 93 octane. If it was something like a bent push rod, or anything mechanical it would knock ALL the time.

It only knocks when I first push slightly on the pedal. It goes away and it does it a bit while at about 45 mph as well. The transmision is fine. I can feel it shift lightly were as before I could not. I prefer the before. I dont like to feel a trans shift thats why I like bmws and infinitis. Wiseguy, the trans on I 35s cant be adjusted the mechanic says. My moms husband says it should loosen to the way it was once its driven more. I hope, though that is not mechanical. I will run premium next. It takes me 10 days to 2 weeks to empty my tank so finding out if this is the culprit may take some time.

seriosly my parents bought a second hand car and it was making funny noises - mum takes it to the mechanics (the car was under warrenty for 2000km - she had alread done about 1600km) any way the guy says, I cant look at it today, bring it back she drove it home, then back the next day - she leaves it at the garage, comes back and they say the engine has leaned out - it needs a whole engine rebuild (@5000$) any way she agress, then she comes back to the garage that sold her the car, they said they will pay - well, they fixed the car, it was running fine, then the garage says, sorry you have done 80km over the limit on the odometer, your warrenty is void! Leaving my mum and dad to fork out over 5000$ to fix the car!

Moral - leave the car @ the garage, record the exact km on the odemeter and push for a refund!
