    Default Protein Drinks?

I've recently started working out again and taking a bunch of vitamins (the superturbo hair routine). One think I'm not taking, however, is a protein supplement (shake or powder mix). I don't eat very healthy, and often eat on the run- either fast food or just whatever I can throw together quickly, and I often only eat one meal a day- the rest of the day I'm just snacking on whatever I have around or can buy on campus on my way to class. So I really think I'm not getting enough protein, which I've read can be important for healthy hair growth, as well as for good results when working out. I was hoping you guys would be able to give me suggestions for good protein shakes or powders. I've been looking at the GNC website, and all their protein is sooo expensive!! But if they work better than the cheaper walmart versions, I'd be willing to try them. Any advice ladies or gentlemen? Also, I only work out about 4 days a week, so if I start drinking protein shakes, should I only do it on days I work out? Because I heard that drinking protein shakes and not working out will just make you gain weight.

My workout goals are to tone up my stomach and legs, and gain a lot more strength and definition in my arms. I would like results as quickly as possible (of course) so if anyone has recommendations for protein or any other supplements, I would appreciate it! Thanks guys!
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.

I can't give you advice on the difference between all the brands, but I like the one I get from Costco (sportpharma, I think?). I guess just find one that has a flavor you like and go with it. One of my favorite things to do is mix vanilla whey powder with frozen berries (and a bit of soymilk to get things moving) and blend it in a blender until it has so much air in it that it almost fills the container. it tastes like berry mousse and you can eat a ton of it (but you'll burp a lot!) for not that many calories. I make them for right after I work out

I'm a vegetarian and work out a lot, so I pay close attention to protein intake. Lots of thing I eat have protein and aren't usually considered protein sources, like cereal, lentils, certain breads...and of course I eat yogurt, milk, eggs, nuts, etc.

But one of those most amazing protein sources I found was Nonfat Greek Yogurt. Check this out!

80 cals, 0 fat, and 15 grams of protein!

Protein is protein. Yes, there's differences in how fast it will be digested and utilized, but for beginners, protein is protein. As long as you like the flavor, there's very little need to shell out for GNC stuff. I like Optimum Nutrition, myself. Low in calories and tastes pretty good, too. A serving should not exceed 25g protein, as your body will not be able to break it down and use it. And make sure to get a protein where the majority of the calories come from protein, not extras (carbs, fat). One gram of protein is 4 calories. Just do some simple math.

If you're working out, I recommend consuming about 1 gram of protein for every kilogram of body weight every day. Even if you're not working out, your muscles still need to be fed. As for the weight gain, some protein shakes are high in calories (to improve flavor) and excess calories are what make you fat, not protein. In all actuality, protein makes one feel fuller for longer, which could cause one to eat less and lose weight.

If you're starting to work out at a higher intensity, I would up your intake of B vitamins. Most places sell them in a complex. Your energy levels will thank you. Other than that, clean up your diet. Small meals and less fast food. You'll see the gym results much faster. Eating clean is the quickest way to a beautiful body and a stomach you could bounce a quarter off.

    I like these.
They taste great and the bottles are big enough to only drink half at a time.

    MET-Rx Protein Plus shakes.
    21 gms protein.
    2 gms carbs.
    1 gm sugar.
100 calories (11 fl oz serving).

I buy 'em at the supermarket....choco & vanilla flavors. They taste pretty good, considering they aren't loaded with alot of calories or sugar.

My favorite protein shake so far is by Kashi. It's their GOLean chocolate shake and contains 29 grams of protein and 7 grams of fiber in 300 calories. Seems like a lot of calories but if you're working out you'll need them and it only has 120mg of sodium. Sodium is bad because it will make you retain water around your waist. Good luck with the search.
I agree with lopaw on the MET-RX stuff though. I haven't tried the shakes but the bars are awesome!

Alright, having managed a GNC for a long time (as well as being a dedicated protein-shake-user myself) I CAN answer this.

    VenusGoddess is on the money....
Isopure is one of the highest quality proteins around. but before brands, let's break down the types of proteins.

1st: Whey. (pronounced "way") left-over from the milk-making process, whey is the most common protein, the most easily & quickly absorbed (therefore the best to have post-workout as it gets to your muscles to help repair them right away), but remember, you can only digest at most 25 gms of protein at a time .... so anything more is wasted.
whey has a 2-hr absorption period (over 2 hrs).... this is a "fast protein."

2nd: Soy. from soybeans.... therefore non-dairy. Absorbed over 6 hrs (much "slower" protein...) therefore, one could eat 50 gms or so, and know it would actually be absorbed over a longer period of time. good for increasing sensation of fullness.

3rd: Casein, or Calcium Caseinate, or Milk Caseinate. also from milk-making process.
VERY slow protein- 8 hr absorbtion time... if you ever see a protein labeled "nighttime" protein, it's almost pure casein, because it's a "time-release" protein that delivers amino acids (the building blocks of protein and human muscle) to your muscles in a very delayed fashion.

Isolate vs. Concentrate: Because most proteins are whey, knowing diff. between concentrate (think frozen welch's grape juice) and isolate (think very high quality, pure, tropicana pure premium) is important. concentrate is basically distilled w/ possible additives. find an isolate /mostly isolate.

best proteins: isopure is a great whey for those looking for good post-workout- however, no one under 230 lbs @ 6'3 can digest all that 50 grams.... monetary & bodily waste. MHP is a great brand.... I take their Probolic protein... wonderful mix of soy, whey, and casein... fast & slow proteins to keep goint through the day. Some Met-rx is good, some have too much sugar.
I keep carbs/sugar low when working w/ protiein, esp. whn i know i will be adding to i. hope this all helps! any ?'s pm me.
