I guess I never really noticed it as an outstanding thing, growing up in Queens and then moving to FL and befriending a bunch of kids from Miami... my Miami-born-&-bred roommate and I call each other "mama," sometimes "pretty mama," less often "mami," but very often a bunch of stupid stuff like "funny woman" or "sexy lady" or other terms of endearment that have nothing to do with regional origin. Hmm. I call the girls at work "mama" sometimes, when I can't remember their names. I've also become a big fan of the nickname "sugar" being here in the south, I say that a lot too. I'm pretty into nicknames, it never occured to me that "mama" might be offensive. I just always thought it was one of those things you could call someone that connoted affection or pleasantness and wasn't all sorority-girl typical like "sweetie" or "hon."

I think (and probably I think too much) that it's a way of acknowledging your reproductive capabilities - you know, like, you can *make* babies, you're a goddess - in a short, affectionate, greeting. I like it.

"Hey mama".... is VERY popular at my club amongst(sp?) the non brazilian girls. (The brazilian girls tend to hang out together but when I'm greated by them they usually kiss my cheek or something)

I like being called mama cause thats what my son calls me. I think its adorable... But then when I notice the same girl call another girl mama I'm like... Oh... its not cause I really am a mom. LOL.

It doesnt bother me. Anything nice said between girls definetly flies by me. I like a positive dressing room.

I like being called mama because I'm a mom. Otherwise chika, girly... whatever. I dont care... As long as its not bitch or ho. LOL.

Bleh I hate it, usually people that call me that are people I will not go over for a dance to. I like to pretend like that is not my name and I have no idea who they are referring to when they say hey mama or hey mami....it is one of my personal pet peeves.

I thought the "Mommi" thing was from LA. I had never heard that before in any of the other stip clubs I had worked in.

That reminds me... I do not respond to "shortie." That's my pet peeve. I feel entitled.

You know...yeah! The more I think about it, I've never been called "mama" or "mami" by anyone who had any real respect for me. It's just some cool street-cred thing to say. Don't call me some intimate shit like that to be cool. Fuck you.

(I had a "friend"--actually my husband's friend's girlfriend--call me that and she was no real friend. Treated me like shit. So I'm bitter.)

^^Some of my best female friends call me mami. It's just a little nickname like any other.

I thought it was like a contraction for "hot mama" - not anything to do with actual maternal status or indicating that they consider you a maternal type figure. The latina girls I know seem to use the phrase like I would say "Hey, pretty girl".

You might not like it, but learning everyone's name is kind of a bitch. I call everyone by meaningless endearments (Hi honey, hey there pretty pretty girl, excuse me babe) because I don't know what else to call them.
