I guess I never really noticed it as an outstanding thing, growing up in Queens and then moving to FL and befriending a bunch of kids from Miami... my Miami-born-&-bred roommate and I call each other "mama," sometimes "pretty mama," less often "mami," but very often a bunch of stupid stuff like "funny woman" or "sexy lady" or other terms of endearment that have nothing to do with regional origin. Hmm. I call the girls at work "mama" sometimes, when I can't remember their names. I've also become a big fan of the nickname "sugar" being here in the south, I say that a lot too. I'm pretty into nicknames, it never occured to me that "mama" might be offensive. I just always thought it was one of those things you could call someone that connoted affection or pleasantness and wasn't all sorority-girl typical like "sweetie" or "hon."
