Awww my heart goes out to the family. The little boy was adorable. I definately want to tell more people about this. I didn't know that seatbelts can unlatch upon impact. I guess we're not always safe..

Am I the only one who doesnt fathom the 4'9" rule? I'm 5'3" which means these kids are crammed into car seats at 6 inches shorter than I am? It seems abit much?

Paige, I'm 5'0" Maybe I'm really too short for a regular seatbelt and just don't know it and should get a booster seat? Although when you drive you can lift your seat higher in your car so maybe that acts the same. I know I was concerned when I saw a thing about sitting too close to airbags since I really can't sit that far back.

Well, my MIL is around 5'0"...and I really think she should use a booster...probably help her see over the steering wheel.

I've always used the anchors. One of my friends was a paramedic and when I was looking for car seats (before Makayla was born) he emphatically told me NOT to buy the infant seats that click into and out of the base. He's been to many accidents where the seat wasn't clicked in all the way and the baby was ejected. Yes, its more "work" (not really) but the infact seats really are not reliable (and you spend so much money on them for such short term use). He also said that many car manufacturers can add LATCH to your car if you don't have any...it'll cost a few hundred to do it, but it'll save your child's life.

If you have leather seats, you should buy that shelf liner material (its that spongey stuff) and cut it to be a little bigger than the length and width of the car seat/booster and put it between the seat and the car seat/booster. It will help it from sliding around and make sure you have a good "snug" fit.

If you are not sure if the seat is properly installed, you can call your local Police/Fire Rescue and ask them if they have an "trained car seat installers". They'll tell you when you can come in and have someone who is trained to install all the seats. They'll even explain exactly how to install it for if you ever need to take the seat out.

I won't watch the video. I don't need to...I don't think I could stand to see that anyways.

I just hope this helps save the lives of other babies. One area that definitely needs to be heavily advertised to parents.

paige..the reasoning for the 4'9 rule is that below that, generally their legs do not "bend" at the knees at the edge of the seat..making them slouch/slide forward, making the lap part of the belt go across their belly instead of their lap/thighs. If in an accident, that can lacerate your intestines..apparently it's fairly common. A nurse friend of mine said they even have a "name" for it in the ER...can't remember what it was though.

vg..just so you know what they are wanting you to know in the video, is keep your child in a 5 pt harness as long as possible..as it's quite common for seat belts to fail..which happened with this child that was in a booster seat. there are 2 brands that go to 80lbs with a 5pt harness...the britax regent and the sunshine kids radian80

something else i also learned from my nurse friend (she's also a certified car seat inspector...is that when you get in an accident, many of us know to replace the car seats, but she also says to insist that the insurance replaces all the seat belts, even ones not in use during the accident. She said if they refuse, then have them sign a "waiver" type thing that essentially says they will be held liable if your seat belts fail in the next accident...I guess most will replace them if you demand that!
