    Pre-Natal Vitamins

My mom started taking a prenatal vitamin supplement a couple months ago with great results. I'm interested in it now with all her rave reviews, but I have a question.

I know too many vitamins can do more harm than good, so would it be OK for me to take these as well?

    I currently take:

    2 Odorless Garlic capsules
    1 Vitamin B12 capsule
    2 Fish Oil Capsules
    1 multivitamin

I know you don't need the multi with the pre. I've asked a doc that one before. He said something about too much Vit A (or was it E)? Dangerous for your vision, I think so prolly A.

Anywho, no multi needed. The pre has at lease 2x the amount of stuff in the multi, unless you have Iron in your multi, and not in your pre-nates.

So should I keep with the rest of my vitamins and just swap the MV for the PN?

Definitely make sure you don't take too much Vitamin A, it's very bad for you in excess. The water soluble vitamins (B and C) are safe pretty much however much you take, as your body will flush out the excess, but A, D, E and K you should stick to 100% RDA (should say on the container)

You definitely want to watch it with the vitamins. The Pre-Natals are LOADED with extras because of the extra stress/changes/etc a woman's body goes through during pregnancy. Honestly, I wouldn't advise someone who's NOT preggers to take a pre-natal. Find a good multi-vitamin and stick with it. Eat up on your fruits and veggies, drink plenty of water, get plenty of sleep/rest, and you won't need to take a pre-natal.

My mom told me I should only take them short term and once every other day if I want to (she's a nurse) I decided to stick to my MV.

Honestly Plenty of doctors prescribe Prenat vits to non pregnant women. I know plenty of women who take them (one women for over 10 years) and they have never had any problems and from what I know there has never been any reported serious side effects. I still take mine even though I'm not preggers, all of my doctors told me to continue taking them.

Even when you are not pregnant and trying for a baby the doctor's will prescribe them for you, even up to you a year before conception.

Also remember that prenat vits only have the maximun dose of certain vitamins which is needed by the body so its not likely that you will over dose. Whatever your body doesn't need it will pee out.

Anyway what VG suggested is great also. If you are taking a great multi vit and eating well you won't need the extra vitamins.

I was hospitalized for vit D intoxication (I have to take a prescribed Vit D which is very potent for medical reasons) It was horrible!

I would think one or the other, and Id choose prenatal. They gotta be good if they are SO important to take in pregnancy, they help mama and baby. Im nursing so Im still taking them,as opposed to the multi I was taking before i was prego. Seems to do better for my skin and everything else. But Im not sure how safe it is to take when not prego, i know a couple girls who always take them and they do fine for them too.
