    Default Does it really?!

This British woman came from Yorkshire when she was 34 and she said she couldn't get any credit because she doesn't have Australian credit and she had to build from scratch.

Doesn't your credit follow you or am I starting clean here?

Yes, starting clean. I'm SO blackballed in the UK, it's not even funny, but I'm squeaky clean in Canada! I don't think credit travels internationally (yet).

Definitely starting clean. I moved to the US a year ago and my credit squeaky clean and I plan to keep it that way.

The big firms are only just getting to grips with chasing unpaid debts abroad. That will still take a while from what I can see.

For example, you could run up a huge credit card bill in, say the UK, skip out and move to Oz and from what I can see, you would probably be allowed a card from the same company in Australia!! As I understand it, the data protection laws prevent info being passed between subsidiaries of the same firm.

I used to play sports with a guy in the UK who did something like that. As I recall, he withdrew up to the limit on his card in cash and used the money to travel South America with his girlfriend. He sent them a few postcards from Colombia and Uruguay etc just so they knew that they had nothing.

Last I heard, he was in Australia but planning to move to Singapore. Chase that!!

I wouldn't have the cojones to do it and would feel guilty for years.

I knew a guy who ran up a $30k Amex bill and then moved to Europe and didn't pay it. Then he came back a few years later to the US and somehow got loans to put himself through law school. Last I heard (which was a while back) he was making $20k a year and somehow driving a Porsche. Guess he didn't pay the lawschool loans either. I don't know about that but I do know that the $30k Amex bill eventually got written off.

My guy friend had A+ credit when living in Australia(his home country), but when he moved to the US a few years ago, he started again from scratch. (But he built up his credit score pretty quickly.) I remember him telling me this. So yeah, it'd be safe to say that your credit started all over again.

You are starting clean.. what might work against you is the fact that you havn't been at the one addresses for 3 years or longer as yet. Also, being self-employed can work against you if you don't have two years worth of end of tax year returns for some loans and credit situations.

Otherwise, just watch out for how many cards you apply for and are denied as that can work against you here in Australia. If you are denied by too many credit institutions on your credit report ( www.baycorpadvantage.com.au for your free australian credit report) that can work against you here in Australia.

In the end, you can just ask the lender why you were denied. I've found that they usually will tell you.

I went to my bank and since they have my deposit records, they say I have a very high chance of getting credit with them. They've reviewed me (plus, I only asked for a $500 limit) and said I'll more than likely be accepted. It should be fine. If it doesn't work, I'll wait until I've been here a year then try again.

    Thank you.
