Default Has anyone had laser eye surgery?

I have astigmatism (not sure how to spell it) and my eyes seem to get worse every year. I have glasses, but they're expensive and need replacing every so often. Plus, I hate wearing them. Contacts are not an option - I just can't tolerate the damn things. I'm seriousely considering the surgery for my vision, but I'm scared! I've read into it - but of course every Dr. and website claims it doesn't hurt. Has anyone done it? Does it last forever? Should I spend all that moolah?

Scorpio had it done. Had it done in July...still doing fine. He said that it burned like hell right afterwards...they gave him some valium and told him to go to sleep for 3 hours when he got home (I drove, of course, heh). Which he did...then they gave him all kinds of drops and "tears".

As far as I know...he doesn't have any complaints. I know he needs to go back in for a check-up really soon...and it doesn't always last forever...but your cornea grows back, and you may need to get it re-done in 5 years or so.

I had it done three months ago. It worked, all went well. For me, the surgery was terrifying... I have major problems with strange people touching my eyes, and 3 valium barely kept me on the surgery table.

You have to be awake. For me it was very uncomfortable and slightly painful. It was worth it the one time, but I don't know if I could go through it again.

On the other hand, I saw a few patients come and go before and after me, and they all said it was a piece of cake... so you might deal with it just fine.

If your eyesight is changing every year, I do not recommend you do the surgery. A good doctor will also probably not recommend it. The surgery is best for people who's vision has not changed within a year or two. Otherwise, you will have to keep getting the surgery over and over as your eyes change... and you only have so much corneal tissue to zap

    Hope this helps.

My favorite comedienne, Kathy Griffin, had complications with Lasik.

I, myself, am hoping to get Lasik within the next couple years. I know a few people that have gone through with it, and are thrilled!!! But I am not done with my research yet...

I really want to talk to someone who's had it for 10 years or so. I don't know enough about it. I was considering it for a while, but I got scared when I went online and read the descriptions of how its done, all the cutting the cornea and pulling back the flap and all that stuff kind of freaked me out.

You think you got it bad..I have astigmatism in both eyes AND I'm near-sighted in one eye, far-sighted in the other I've been wearing glasses since I was 6yrs old..I've never worn contacts bc they'd be to expensive for my eyes. I've thought about the eye surgery but just my luck I'll be that 1% of patients who gets no improvement

One of my friends had it done a little more than 6 years ago. I just spoke with her and she said that she hasn't had any complications or had to go back. Its all dependant on your body.

Scorpio said that the actual surgery was a little uncomfortable at first...but they do numb out your eyes, so all you feel is pressure and not pain. The cornea is the fastest healing organ in the body and by the end of the day, you'll have a little burning, but it won't be bad. After a week, most people's corneas have completely healed up.

CK, I've got really severe astigmatism too and I'm nearsighted in both eyes and I was always told that it would be a major hassle to fit contacts. I finally tracked down one of the best optomatrists in town and he fit me in two visits. And Eve21, he first tried the ones you are talking about and I said they were way too uncomfortable, so he put a different set in, he said they were relatively new but getting lots of positive response, they were thicker on each side so they would stay in place, and they feel very comfortable. I haven't experienced any wobble with them.

I had it done earlier this year and was really, really happy with the results. The recovery was really a breeze too.

I was just nearsighted though; I know there are different circumstances for people with astigmatism.

A question to those of you who've had it done....

During surgery, are you knocked out,or concious? What do you see with the eye that is being operated on,do you see the actual surgery? How long was the surgery?

I haven't had it but I was ND's seeing eye dog for the day she had the surgery. You're conscious but sedated with valium. The surgery is very quick - like 10-15 minutes. The majority of time is spent waiting for the valium to kick in and then another 15 minutes post procedure.

I'm not sure what you see - Nina? I think you see nothing while it's done. Then when they close the flap it's very blurry. Your vision improves throughout the day.

Joe said that he could see things, but with all of the numbing agents they put on the eyeball and the valium...coupled with the cornea being lifted...and the lube drops...all you see is haziness.

Joe said that the next morning, he could see 100% better. He had his procedure done in July and he still has a little haze during night driving, but its steadily improving (it can sometimes take up to 6 months to fully take effect).

Thanks for the info, guys.I want to get it done too,but scared. You know, this surgery was invented by a russian doctor,Fyodorov, who then later mysteriously died in a helicopter crash. It would probably be cheaper to get it done in Russia, but they keep improving the surgery,so I'm gonna wait a bit.

I had mine 6 years ago. I was incredible near sighted. I now have 20/20 vision but I wear glasses for reading now.

You are awake the whole time. They put a drop in your eyes that numb them. It goes really fast and doesn't hurt. You can see perfectly IMMEDIATELY. I went home at 5 and was watching TV at 8.

You sleep with goggles on for about 5 days so you don't rub your eyes. This is less painful than the dentist.

I had it done one month ago. It doesn't hurt at all. Just a little bit unpleasant for a moment. I have astigmatism too.

    edit:
It takes like 10 minutes, then they gave me a pair of sunglasses, and I went home. You get these eye drops with you that you have to take every now and then. I didn't get any googles though.
Like a year ago something happened with my eyes so I couldn't wear contacts anymore. And I couldn't live with the thought of wearing glasses for the rest of my life.

I took one of my friends. He was totally conscious. I watched from the surgery viewing room. They put a plastic thing in your eyelid to keep it open. Then they make the marks around your cornea except for a little bit and fold it over. Then they laser the eye. Then they fold the cornea back into place.

It feels like sand or something in your eye for a few days while your cornea reataches itself.

My friend accidentally shut his left eye and popped the plastic thing out right before they started. They had to make sure he didn't scratch his eye. Thank god he didn't and he didn't move again.

His eyesight's great except he now needs reading glasses and never needed them before.

I want to get it done too, but am more afraid of me moving and F***ing it up than of any medical reason...

sadly if your eyes are still changing they may not do the surgery. your eyes need to be stable for about a year or two that way they dont change after the surgery. i had it done 2 years ago...my astigmatism was so sever i couldnt see even with my glasses on and any contacts hurt. the Dr said i would probably still need glasses after the surgery. it was quick and painless, within a few hours i couild see clearly. i now have 20/15 with no complications at all & no more glasses!
