Default Health insurance coverage for mole removal?

OK I have a few moles, one of which is really bothering me. It is this small, raised mole on the side of my waist. Lately it's been very dry and has been breaking open to a small extent. I do not want it to break open in some situations, such as when dancing on stage, and I also do not want an open bruise like this to get infected. I have another mole(below my belly button) that nearly fell off a few years ago! As in, part of it fell off and it was bleeding for a good week or two, but then the mole grew back and it looks normal except for this upraised white part in the center(where part of the mole fell off). Has anyone had any experiences like this with moles? Are these weird experiences a sign of a bigger problem??

Anyway, I am wondering if I could get the mole on my waist removed with lasers. I am not seeking this procedure for "cosmetic" reasons, but because I am worried that perhaps it could cause infection, inconvenience(such as breaking open for no reason at all), and what if it puts me at risk for much bigger problems, such as cancer? (Cancer runs VERY prevalently in my family) Is there any possibility that my Aetna HMO plan would cover such a procedure, or would it probably be completely out of my pocket? Any input? Thanks!

It would depend on what your doctor says. If they want to biopsy it, it'll be covered...if they feel that it could cause problems on down the line, it'll probably be covered. But, if they feel that its really nothing...and they'll remove them only because you want them to, it won't be covered.

Of course, this is all dependant upon what kind of insurance you have. They all have different guidelines on which they cover these procedures.

^^^ Definately. It all depends on what your doctor says. Go to the doctor!!!! Any changes in a mole should be brough to a doctors attention to rule out anything serious. Even if he's just worried that it may cause problems down the road, it will probably be covered under your insurance to get it removed. Go to the doctor so you can stop worrying!

I have AetnaHMO and they wouldn't cover my skin tag removal. BUT, plans vary by state. Find a good doctor that you have a good relationship with, and they will let you know. Also, just call the 800 # on the back of your ins. card. They can tell you. Or Aetna's website. Lots of options. The doc gets paid either way.....

I had 3 removed a few months ago and my insurance covered it. Mine were all close to either my bra strap or my waistline and I told the doctor that my clothes were bothering them. Really I just had a problem with one but she removed all of the ones that were close to being in contact with elastic, etc. I'm thinking that the one on your waistline might be getting irritated by your pants In that case, the insurance should pay for it, but confirm that just to be sure. Also, if you keep scratching one until it bleeds because of the location, that should be covered too.

^ ^ Thank you for that info. I think I am in a similar situation, with my mole being inline with the waistline of many pants. Also, it is inline with the seams of many gowns that I wear to work. That might explain why it keeps getting dry or agitated. As far as the mole that was below my belly button, I have no explanation for that one. Hopefully these things aren't a sign of a bigger problem. I will schedule a doctor's appointment and see if I can have the one removed.

Are there any safety/health risks to keeping moles? Or, are there any health benefits to having a mole removed?(for example, does it decrease risk of skin cancer on that area later on?) Just curious. Thanks for the info, guys.

Most moles are benign...but some can be malignant. The only way to tell is to have a qualified doctor look at them.

I have one on my belly...and its never given me any problems. But, if you are concerned about the ones you have, get it checked out.

With my insurance atleast, the insurance will cover the biopsy, until the results come back and if it comes back as nothing they will refuse to pay it

just call your call and ask..they can find out from the insurance.

    as for risks..

removing a mole won't decrease your chance of cancer

keeping a healthy mole has no health risk

i am a very "moley' person...earlier this year I had 5 moles removed for biopsy to check for melanoma, fortunatly they were benign, but i do have scars now. a few years ago with a different insurance, i had 2 moles removed and it was covered because they were "irritated" by my bra (rubbing/bleeding like yours). However, these were two totally different procedures.

my first one was just with a scaple, cut "flush" against my skin...no scarring at all really, however my most recent ones were "punch biopsies", they essentially dug a small hole in me. because you can't really sew a circle up well, it left a raised scar (5 in my case). so if you can get away with the first type, do that one, but if they feel it looks "iffy" as in need to check it for melanoma, then you'll get a punch biopsy done. go to a dermatologist for a punch bio though, you'll have better "scar" results...even better go to a plastic surgeon for a punch..but you may risk insurance not paying for a p.s.
