    Default cutting your own hair

I keep reading that some of the ladies on here are cutting their own hair. I want to know how I can do this without messing up sooo bad. At the moment, my hair is very long, and I was thinking about making an appointment to get it cut next week, but then I remembered these ladies.

My hair is long enough that if I mess it up this time I could have it fixed pretty easily, but I'd still rather do a great job all on my own, and be able to brag about how well I did my first time. How do you do it right?

I remember years ago I tried to layer my hair to get the old feathered look. She had to cut alot off to fix it. I recommend not to,but if you do good luck!

I cut my own hair, but my hair is hardly anyone's idea of spectacular hair, lol. I get away with it because my hair's wavy, so there are no straight lines to be seen anyways.

My system is similar to what I see in the salon...I use tweezerman barber shears, start with the bottom layer, and work my way to the outside, usually doing 4 or 5 (horizontal) partitions.

I trim about once every 8 weeks, cutting off about a cm. Every 6 months or so I spend an afternoon shaping it and getting the layers right, so that I can just follow the template and cut 1 cm off of everything during my regular trims.

I do this by combing thru my hair, moistening it, then putting in a ponytail & putting rubber bands (or whatever holders) about 1 inch or so down the length of it. I have a professional scissors, & I snip no more than 2 in. max. My hair is fairly long also, I go to a salon for color, so I'm just not going to pay like an add'tl $70.00 for a damn haircut.

Just make sure you don't cut too much, start with a little and get the feel for it and you could always cut more if needed.

This is what i do with mine!

I can cut my own the bangs, and can give a nice trim to someone else's hair, but cannot cut the back side of mine.I would like to keep the ends straight or oval, other words, simple.Every time I go to get a trim they cut too much off or make it crooked.Learning to do it yourself would be great.

I play around with mine, just trims and such. I rarely goto a salon for a cut, b/c its so expensive. Just go slow, and step back to look at the whole picture every so often. Ad if you do make a major mistake, stop. don't try to fix fix fix, b/c it will get short fasT!!!!

Well, I'm glad someone mentioned the scissors thing, because I was totally going to do it with my giant fabric scissors. I will pick up some good hair scissors from the beauty supply store tomarrow....... I am excited to try the layer it yourself thing.

I have straight hair and I tried to cut it myself once and it was a disaster. My mom however has very wavy thick course hair and she had been cutting it herself for a while and I never knew it.
