    Angry Insurance scam

Ok, so my Mom's on Medicare, & I also have her on Blue Cross/Blue Shield Medicare supplement. It costs like 313 for a 3 month period, & covers a lot of stuff. I've been having a hard time, so when the last premium was due, I sent in a half payment, w/note saying I'd send in the other half. Well, they took the $, then sent it back, & asked for it again like twice. Meanwhile, they cancell, then re-instate the policy, now they're asking for DOUBLE the amount in just the same amount of time in the premium period $636.00 for 3 months. I just sent this amount in, by certified mail & using a money order. Also, my mom has a kidney stone so I've been having her to go for tests (3 blood tests & $450.00 per, EKG, & x rays) & she's scheduled for a procedure to get in removed. I fully intend to explore other options for insurance companies, but I have just barely a month to do so. I also intend to write to them asking why they've done this, as well as write to the dept. of insurance for my state, but bascially it just seems like I'm f*cked over here

Sometimes I think the US and Mexico pretty much have the same healthcare strategy.

two words, with one of them hyphenated ..... Pre-Existing Condition !

If your Blue Cross coverage on your mother was cancelled for any period of time and then reinstated, odds are that they will NOT cover the kidney stone related costs because they are occurring too 'soon' under the 'new' insurance coverage. There is usually some fine print in such policies that any serious medical developments that occur within the first 12 months of coverage are subject to exclusion as Pre-Existing Conditions.

These insurance laws are designed to prevent people who have no insurance coverage but who have recently been diagnosed with cancer, AIDS etc. from signing up for new coverage and then almost immediately dumping massive medical bills on the insurance company. If your previous coverage was cancelled, odds are that your 'new' coverage will fall under these laws.

Well, according to them, they when it was supposedly re-instated, I got a statement/bill from one of tests (an x ray). saying it was not covered I'm just upset that I'm being double charged for the same time frame of the premium period. I'm now short in my account, & have to get a cash advance

this sure smells like the insurance company is trying to use the 'pre-existing condition' exclusion law to avoid having to pay your mom's kidney stone related bills for the next year.

I would take it up with the insurance company...and then start pitching a fit with the IL Dept of Insurance...and with Medicare, etc. Usually, with the threat of going to a regulating agency with a load of complaints, etc...is enough to get them in gear and make them correct it themselves.

For the record...I've always hated BC/BS.

Yay, Venus! Thanks, I certainly will do that. I totally hate them now too. I was so upset yesterday, I barely ate all day. I will definately do the above, & get another ins. carrier.

    Thanks also, to Melonie

Pre-existing conditions are only applicable if the individual has been without any coverage for a period of greater than 63 days. This is not a pre-x situation.

It sounds to me like what may have happened was that the payment you sent in was not enough to keep the policy in force so they cancelled it. Does the policy allow you to pay a partial premium? If not, no matter how good your intentions with the note and all they likely didn'thave to accept the payment. My guess is they sent it back to you and cancelled the policy. Was it reinstated or was it reissued? Because if it was reinstated then they would have had to do it at the previous premium. If it was reissued they could give you a premium increase.

If your mom is on Medicare and depending on her age, I would see if she qualified for Medicaid. Medicaid is also for senior citzens of low income but it pays for everything and everytime. That way you don't have to worry about supplemental insurance.

If that isnt possible you can also get supplemental insurance thru the medicare program.

Well, she is partially on Medicaid (for prescriptions only). I am now actively looking into another plan. I spoke w/them just now. They have raised her premium from 108.00 per mo. asking for 3 mo. payment installment of $318.00. Now they've raised it to 159.00 a month, hence the 636.00 which is a coverage period from 9/1/06 to 1/1/07.

Can you not get her fully on Medicaid? I would certainly look into that first.
