    Default Health Insurance in Australia

Health is free in Australia but I wanted better health (it's really bad that it all depends on what hospital you go to, for me, seeing as you can end up paying more if you go to a closer hospital, but I digress)...

And I just got MediBank Private. I have $250 of my glasses covered, physio for my leg, acupuncture, massage therapy and even speech pathology all on my plan. I also get to see a dentist, in full, twice a year.

I'm paying $20 a month for the extras (not counting the actual OH SHIT I NEED AN ER!).

Was this a good company to go with? I can cancel anytime but I have to wait a few months (depending on surgery) before I can go in. Two months before I can get physio for my leg, six months before I can get my glasses, etc.

My parter is with someone different but I don't know how his works.

Also, I only got the extras and I plan on getting the emergency hospital coverage for private hospitals as well, how much should I expect to pay for that?

And for the dentist, they said I pay with a card that I swipe and for anything else, I pay up front and send MediBank the bill. Do they pay back soon? Why can't they use the card? Do they need to prove if it's for an injury? I already asked and they said my pre-existing leg injury was perfectly fine.

So you're only paying $20 in total per month? Because I've been looking into health insurance only for extra covers, I don't want hospital cover etc. I've never been able to get a quote on just extras, but when I was looking at hospital cover it was like at least $60 a month, which I thought was extreme and wrong and was too lazy to look into it. I don't want to pay that much per month for something that might not happen when I could put that into a savings account instead? But I have glasses and need physio and dental work which is why I want extras.

Medibank's been around for a long while. I don't know how fast they pay back or details and such, but they are a very good, reputable company.

Yup, $20 per month for the second plan. The worst one is $10... but the extra $10 gets you physio and acupuncture and all the other goodies.

Well, all the Medicare, Medibank, HBF etc are all in the same building so if anyone has any better plans, I can just cross the 2 metre sidewalk. I have to go to Medicare today anyway... seeing as I need birth control and I have the right visa and proof of it now.

for birth control, as far as I am aware, you just book an appointment with the doctor (you can get bulk billing from some if you have a medicare card - or it will only cost you $50.00) you should just ask for a prescription and just go to the chemist with it!

Yeah, I do that already but it was costing me about $80 every time (visit + shot) because I'm not on medicare. I already have a script written up for the implant and I can get that whenever I want... I just wanted medicare so it would be cheaper.

I also want permanant sterilization... which I just went into medibank and got covered as well.
