Default Gay Marriage legalized in Israel

My Israeli friend just told me they legalized gay marriage there.

    What do you think?

I think either someone in America will go, "Hey, those 3rd world people got more advanced than us!" or say, "Hey, there's proof that dem debbils are really debbils to be killed!"

I say it's going to be the latter.

    *sigh*

I was told over there! Men are for pleasure and women are for making babies! At least they acknoweledge that being gay. Has been around for a long time. It is part of human nature. That it is not a sickness! Has anybody seen the history of sex on the history channel. It was about the history of sex. humans had went thru a period. Where men and women where having relations. With the same sex. Which was normal during that time. That the death rates was more than the birth rates. How the certain offical put a stip to it!

I don't think Israel is considered third world... Zend, the company that makes PHP that this forum runs on top of, is an Israeli company I believe.

Gays in this country are dealing with the same problems as topless sunbathers and strippers are.

I think the screaming has been gettting louder lately, because more and more people are refusing to live in the 1950's (or even the 1650's.)

And yet, American liberals are probably still going to sniff about those evil Israelis, and continue to side with those who abuse women and execute gays under their fundamentalist theocracies. Go figure.

^ Yeah, that's what I thought would happen. *sigh*

Oh well, my Israeli friend is transsexual, so it works for her in the end, since she technically plans on marrying the same sex she was originally.

And now I just thought... how does gay marriage work in those instances? o.O

For anyone wondering, this is not exactly true.
Gay marriages performed abroad may be *registered* (not *recognized*) in Israel. You still cannot perform or have performed a same sex marriage in Israel. And there are already lawmakers who are orthodox objecting, and attempting to pass laws to block the Supreme Court's order. It will be interesting to see how that works out, since I'm pretty sure that the court system in Israel is secular (at least ostensibly) but family law is (I think) rabbanical.

But in case anyone is wondering orthodoxy in Christianity, Judaism and Islam are all inimical to gay marriage. They are aboslutely united on that front.

Well, like I said, the information was from an Israeli friend, so she probably didn't mention everything.

Jenny, Judaism itself is not "absolutely united" on this front (nor on several others). Reform Judaism has female rabbis, gay rabbis, gay union ceremonies, etc. Orthodoxy has only straight male rabbis and no recognition of gay partnerships. And Conservative Judaism, as usual, is somewhere in the middle, varying by congregation.

You're right though in that family law is not secular in Israel. Jews are subject to rabbinic-oriented law; Christians, Muslims, Baha'i, and other faiths have their own religious family law. This is why interfaith marriages are not performed in Israel, but the Israeli government will recognize such marriages performed elsewhere (most Israelis go to nearby Cyprus for this sort of thing). I guess gay marriages are just going to go by the same rules.

Well, that's why I said orthodoxy in Judaism, Christianity and Islam are united as opposed to all Jews are united.

Although - last night I sold about 10 dances based on this information - thank you LM. I was chatting with an Israeli Jew and asked if he knew that the Supreme Court in Israel had just ordered the government to register gay marriage; he told me that was impossible, I said it wasn't and he's was all "Well, we have to drink to that!" Just a sidebar.
