    Default Crashing through weight plateaus

While I’ve been loosing weight nicely over the months—8lbs to 10lbs from my goal; 15lbs from “ideal” according to the charts---I’ve hit a couple of plateaus. This hasn’t bothered me because, hey, I’m on the sit-in-the-chair-and-watch side of the equation. I imagine it’s much, much more stressful for you ladies and gentlemen who perform.

So to my question: What are some strategies for bashing through a weight loss plateau? Here, again, we’re not talking about a crash diet but rather changes in one’s exercise program or, more likely, eating habits that will help. Thanks in advance.

Well, it's hard to advise you without knowing what type of eating plan you're doing.

I found that the easiest way to drop any type of weight was to up my veggies and lean protein and eliminate sugar/starches. Up your water intake as well.

I have to eat like this all the time now and have no problem stuffing my face till I'm full and not gaining any poundage.

I know that you work out a lot, but I don't know what you do for cardio. Upping that could also help. Or varying your current routine.

    Just some suggestions.

Interesting that two of you have suggested increasing water intake. The thing is, I sort of hate drinking water. Diet, caffine-free drinks, sure, but water is boring! Plus, if I consume alot of liquid, I find I'm constantly going to the mens room (as the saying goes, "The little ones fill up fast"). This isn't a problem, exactly, but is annoying, especially when I'm out with friends. "Again? He's headed back to the boys room again? I wonder if he's doing blow."

just grit your teeth and do it :p lol the more water you drink, the less ADH (anti diuretic hormone) will be released into your blood, so the less water will be reabsorbed from your pee Soda doesn't have the same effect, because the solutes/salts in it mean that you retain water and bloat. Just tell your friends they're just jealous that you have a healthy bladder lol

You have to drink water. Most soda is loaded with sugars and artificial sweetners which will easily sabotage any weight loss attempts. If you do not like plain water, then sqeeze some lemons into sparkling water (for the carbonation). Or once per hour, just down a glass of water (you should have about 1 serving of water per hour you are awake). Trying to get out of drinking water, but lose weight is like trying to avoid breathing. You can't do it. Not only does water hydrate all of your cells, but it cleanses them to (helps detoxify the waste products of your cells). If you are not going to the bathroom regularly, that's not good. You WANT to go often (for many reasons).

Drink your water, keep a journal of what you are eating (everything), and go from there.

Also, if you havent changed your routine your body may be used to the kind of workout youre doing. For example, if you have been running switch to bike and go on and off just to shock your body into trying hard to get through the exercise. You dont have to follow that workout but change in workout is whats key.
Also if youve been eating the same number of calores the same food then you should change that too.

Doubles, doubles, doubles. Cardio in the morning before eating, cardio in the evening before sleeping. You see the pounds peel off in a couple weeks.

One more thing to note. Never base your weight goals on those stupid charts. Those charts do not take muscle density, bone density, etc into account. Sometimes when you hit a "plateau" its because you are at your ideal body weight.

But, if you hit a plateau and you are NOT at the weight you should be (based upon your individual body needs) then changing your workout routine (you should be doing this every 4 weeks, anyways), pulling more junk out of your diet, and making sure that you are drinking plenty of water will get you past that.

Changing the workout routine sounds like a plan (and, yes, more water per VG). As running and my lower back seem unable to keep their truce, I may get back into the pool for laps, which kicks my ass every time. Already doing 30min bike & 20-30 min ellyptical each session.

Straight cardio for weight loss is overrated. Switch to lifting, but don't lolly gag around, keep your heart rate up the whole time (the goal of cardio). Also, if you aren't lifting at all, you will add several pounds of lean muscle to your larger muscle groups in two weeks if you consume enough lean protein at the right times. That will burn far more calories per day then a cardio session would.

Its costly ..but try buying Fiji water (you can get it at regular stores) its $$$$$
but it helps me drink water more.. it just tastes good
my son and his friends (all soda/gatorade drinkers in their own homes) all want a bottle.. the bottle looks cool, the little story about it is inspiring, and if nothing else it has flat bottoms so it doesnt topple over in the fridge..
or just go to the exotic water area at the store and buy a few fancy bottles.. the cost is minimal compared to the inspiration of drinking more water which really is good for you.. once you start drinking alot of water each day you really will feel different if you dont
another way to get the water liquid in is fill a glass with mostly water - good tasteing water - and put a splash of your favorite juice.. helps it go down better

Update: My original post was back in November. Was at that plateau and then gained a bit for a couple of months--holiday eating, I expect.

But I'm once again loosing weight. Yippie. It is coming off slowly, slowly: maybe a half pound or less a week.

And while I'm still rotten about drinking sufficient amounts of water, I have increased my fiber via fruits and vegitables. And I've been avoiding "white" foods completely, notably white breads. So, when I do splurge on a sandwich or some bread with dinner, I always go the whole grain route. The upshot? I figure I'll be back at my college weight, or less, come summer.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Lowering calories slightly always works for me. Just cut 200 or so and you'll start moving again. Another thing that works is alternating your caloric intake. You might have, say, 1300 one day, then 1000 the next, then 1300 again. Works like a charm.

Adding some extra exercise works as well. Nothing major, just, say, an extra walk every other day should help get things moving.

Changing up your cardio works. Your body gets use to the routine so changing things up should help you break through. And sitting down and really looking at what you're eating, most people eat more calories than they think they're eating. Make some changes there too if necessary. Good luck.

Default The secret to drinking LOTS of water. . .

. . . for me is powdered Gatorade.

Yeah, it has some calories (about 50/scoop) but I just put one scoop in my liter-sized, wide-mouthed water bottle, shake it up, and that does the trick.

It's just sweet/salty enough to keep me chugging.

It's easy to drink 3-4 liters a day this way. Sure, four scoops is 200 calories--but four liters is also a GALLON of water!

I've found that cheating a little bit for a day or two has helped me overcome plateaus.

I'm looking at a can of Fruit Punch flavored Gatorade powder, and it says 13g per scoop.

I hear gatorade is more acidic than pop. Make sure to rinse your mouth b/c the acidity is really bad for your enamel.
