Default Xmas retail job for fun?

I don't know, this is kind of stupid, but I'm taking December mostly off to recover from an injury, and thought maybe I'd pick up a temp xmas job at the mall or something, lol.

I have the feeling it would really help me appreciate dancing...

If you can handle it, go for it. Just realise that it will be high stress time and low pay. Just remember you are an EMPLOYEE not self-employed so you will have to put up with alot more for far less ............ and whilst I have been tempted to take on some waitressing work in January (maybe) I won't in the end as I realise how shit the pay is compared to doing something like promo work.

Is there any promo work available in your area around this time of year?

It isn't as fun as it looks. Malls are crazy busy, people are pissy and making pennies doesn't seem worth it at the end of the week.

I tried it at Victoria's Secret one year (hey I wanted the discount!) and it licked balls.

I agree with GoldCoastGirl, currently I'm working on a new gaming device promo in the mall, and at $17.00 an hour just to play and encourage others to play, it's not a bad idea. PM me if you want a list of promo agencies that are nationwide. Now is a great time for promo work because many companies want to market around this time of year.

My company (Blockbuster) hires a lot around the hollerdays. Not as stressy as mall stores or clothing shops... and its kinda fun! Plus there are the part time health benefits and free rentals...

when i worked at a mall at christmas, it was nuts. five years ago, i worked at a discovery channel store, and for the holidays, we had these massive amounts of glass ornaments set up on display trees. of course, the kids would grab them, people with big coats would brush against them, and then they'd shatter. we'd clear the area so that shopping could resume.

when break time came, getting a coffee was near impossible thanks to all of the lines. however, sitting by the X-mas display in the mall's center was nice. plus, i admit, i got some great stuff discounted.

if you work retail, don't expect to make lots of money (compared to dancing), be prepared to deal with "...." as GCG said. however, it can have its fun moments, and can be a good break from dancing (if for some reason you're sick of it).

most of all, enjoy the holidays. sometimes it's hilarious to watch the many insane people that hit the mall (and other people) this time of year. working in the field could be entertaining....who knows .

I thought it'd be fun, but then I realized I'd spend all my pay on stuff from the store. So I'd be right back to where I started, except I'd be burnt out for high season in the strip club.

Plus retail sucks. The customer is not always right and you can't throw a drink in his lap.

I have friends (hot college girl friends!) working at macy's in fragrance/ jewelry, and they make 2-3 times their paycheck in commissions. so they can average 20-30$ an hour. Not too bad.....

I grew up in a house where the breadwinner worked high end fashion retail, and Christmas was very hard on her.

You could do it if it was selling something you really liked, though, and preferably if you could wrangle some sort of commission--now there's a devastating combination, liking what you are selling, & making a little more on what you are selling.

I agree that the mall during x-mas SUCKS!!! I wouldnt want to be the sales associate during this time of year. I did however just accept an interview for a management trainee at pennys. it isnt a temp job though, and by the time that I actually started working the store, (out of the trainng) it would be WELL past x-mas.
If you are going to work somewhere for the season, deffinitly go somewhere that you will be making commision. I think the perfume counter sounds about right. Maybe they will even give you a stool to sit on so you dont have to stand all day.

The last word I'd use to describe a retail job during the holidays, is "fun". Oy. I might've considered it for the employee discount before I danced, but not anymore.

I did that last year - got a job at American Eagle, for the first 2 weeks new employees got 50% off! Then it was like 30 or something. Anyway, I re-stocked my closet then quit
I may do the same thing at Victoria's Secret or Abercrombie this year

Scarlett.. You could always do what I did 2 Holiday Seasons ago.. I worked at TarGhetto (Target), stocking overnight. They give you as many hours as you can work without dropping dead, so the weekly paychecks are NICE! I worked the entire season, and they wanted to keep me on as a regular employee after the seasonal employment was done. But, I didn't stay.

Great hours, though, if you're nocturnal like me.

I worked from between 8pm and 10pm to about 6am or 7am (sometimes even LATER.. like 11 AM!).

5 freebies a week, plus we get to see the new flicks 1-2 weeks before they hit shelves. I get health bennies at 10 hours a week, and an okish discount on purchases....

We don't have any details yet, but we're hoping things work out...

My company worked with American Express to create a "members lounge" in a local mall during the holidays. Basically a place for people with Amex cards to go and check email, have their coats held/packages checked, get light refreshments, etc... It worked out really well this season, and we're hoping that this will roll out to other malls in the US for Christmas 2007. If it happens, these lounges need "concierges" to direct patrons and answer their questions, also people to help with credit applications and whatnot. We were able to pay $18/hour for the concierge positions and upwards for $30/hour for the managers. (I considered doing the job over the holidays, but I had just quit another part-time retail job and was too burnt out for it.) What a great opportunity that would be for anyone looking for some extra cash outside of dancing!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this! I'll update if I hear any news...

*Humph* I Love Target! The consumers average income that shop their is $50,000 a year, compared to Wal Mart consumers. If you think target is "ghetto" than you're really glamorizing the term
