Default Favorite Charities for Holiday Donations

Since my grandparents and parents really don't need any stuff, I usually give donations for the holidays. I was just wondering who everyone else liked to donate to.

Planned Parenthood is always a favorite for me (also for my mom and maternal grandma).

I used to like the Heifer Project, but I'm not certain that livestock is the best option in developing countries and would like to find an agricultural/water program to donate to.

badpixie here mentioned that she likes to donate to the Humane Society and I think that's probably a charity that anyone can get behind (I am not going to give my more conservative family members the PP donation card; not worth the potential conversation over the holidays).

Anyhow, it's the season for giving, and I think this is one of the best ways to do it. I'd love to hear who everyone else donates to over the holidays either personally or as a gift.

You know, I also think it might be funny to purposefully give provocative donations, like to the NAACP for my racist grandpa or to MoveOn or NORML for my Republican dad . . . hee hee. maybe anonymously.

I will be donating to a battered womens shelter and also any clothes, shoes, makeup etc that I don't need will be going there too for the women trying to get jobs. Many of the women have children also so I would like to donate some toys.

I belong to a local mom's group and this year we're donating a bunch of maternity clothes, baby clothes, toys, and other misc. items to our local battered women's/children's shelter.

Joe always donates his state income tax refunds to Local Animal Charities.

I've always tried to donate to the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Animal Welfare League (in the SW burbs of Chicago). I've done this here and there throughout the year, not just around the holidays. As you'll see in my sig, there are some others that I've been attached to lately.

This year, I've really become Ms Philanthropy and I've kinda gone crazy with charities. I've just been on this charitable kick lately (almost to the point of me barely scraping by at times) and I couldn't be happier with my choices. I love the idea of doing that as a gift for the holidays....that is really smart. Thanks for the idea.

Edit: I also like to donate my old work clothes to a local resale shop that is part of a battered women's shelter. It's a place where women can go get professional clothes to try to get a job to get on their feet, etc. In fact, I have a giant box that's been collecting dust until I can make my way out there. I'm all of a sudden motivated to get that done too. Thanks. ;-)

Not every year however I have been known to purchase http://wwf.org.au/shop/categories/adoptions for people as my gift this time of year.

I also donate to the local animal shelter by purchasing from their OP shop or giving them OP shop items to sell and/or just plain out donating via that shop (easier than going to the actual shelter as it is a far distance from me).

When I move in February all the op shops/charities will be receiving a lot of stuff from me that I can't sell and/or would have ended up throwing away. My bed base, bed mattress, sofa couch with fold out bed, the other sofa and a whole slew/heap of clothes....

Overall my favourite charities are WWF, Wildlife Warriors and Animal Protection League of QLD (it's where Bibs was originally purchased so I'm forever in debt to them for gracing me with such a wonderful animal companion).

St. Judes Children's Hospital gets a big check from me most years. I donated quite a bit to Katrina relief last year, NOT to the government, but private charities that actually did something.

I will usually buy a food gift box and some toys/clothes for needy local families, too.

Oh, I almist forgot, we are giving a big donation to a local family this year in the form of construction work- Like $2000.00 worth of labor and materials.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

I work at an apartment community so we are doing the toys for tots and a can food drive. The really sad part is that last year we had the same drive and NO one donated out of 732 apartments. Yet this year we offer to enter them into a drawing to win half off thir jan rent (this is in Cali where rent is high) and people are donating like crazy. It makes me so mad.

*mwahaha* my evil laugh was all prepared for that one.
that's like when my roommate anonymously bought these orthodox jews a wedding gift of a membership to lobster-of-the-month club as she was on the B list and she knew they just wanted a gift out of her..

    as for charitable donations:
I know this is a weird one to some, but i like to donate to my police force. especially like to support the SVU (special victims unit- sex crimes etc) and Narcotics (even though i admittedly smoke pot on occasion, kinda ironic) because here in philly we need all the help we can get. And, if you donate to any police organization you get a cool window sticker that gets you out of tickets (although that wasnt why i gave).

I also like to donate to Allergy Research funds because my sister died of an allergic reaction and I myself have severe food allergies. They still don't know why or what causes food allergies. http://www.aafa.org/display.cfm?id=10&sub=40

There's also (for jews, or jew-lovers) Jewish Federation. http://www.ujc.org/

    Love it!

I like make a wish, b/c I value happiness so much. Also to our local women's organizations. I've also been known to drive through impoverished neighborhoods and put holiday cards w/ giftcards to target or a rsturant in mailboxes w/ toys in the yard/ carseats. I say, have a happy holiday, enjoy this gift or pass it on. I just sign them from a friend.

I give to the March Of Dimes throughout the year. Sometimes if I'm able, I give a bit more during the Holidays to them. They were there for me when I was little, so I try and give back as much as possible.

This year, although we can't do much... At the Grocery Store, they have paper bags made up with food. The bags are in varying amounts, and contain various non-perishable foods to be given to the local food banks. I added one to my Grocery order when I shopped. Wasn't much---$15. But, at least it's something, and every little bit helps them this time of year.
