    Default Tornado Alley

So I'm sitting here freaking out right now, because my husband has several potential jobs across the Midwest, particularly in the "Tornado Alley" region. I believe he has gotten calls from Omaha Nebraska and Kansas. He says cost of living is low, but I fear it's because there's a high chance each year your stuff will be destroyed by a tornado. I don't want to rebuild my life many times over, and have things with sentimental value, like my car, destroyed.

How bad is it really in this area? I really need to hear from y'all over there....

Nothing to worry about. The low living costs here are a result of economics, not the weather. There simply isn't as much money to be made here in a respective field as in other parts of the country.

Tornadoes are hellish when and where they do hit, but they are still a rare phenomena. Even in the heart of TA, many people go from cradle to grave without actually seeing one. The odds your house will be hit by one in any given year are a fraction of 1%. You may have to head to the basement once or twice a year, but when a tornado does hit, the area it affects is tiny compared to other types of disasters. If anything I'm more concerned about lightning strikes, floods, hail, winter weather, and the same socio-economic problems that happen everywhere else.

Even though it's Texas, we're technically right in the middle of tornado alley, too. I've come close to a few (including the infamous F5 Jarrell tornado), but I've never actually been in one. They really aren't all that common in this area, but you just have to take the precautions and know what to do if there IS a tornado.

I, like you, am a bit paranoid of them. My great-grandparents (I never got to meet them) were killed when a tornado hit this area when my dad was a teenager. I'll tell you why it freaks me out, though- they were killed, but a small wall clock and a doll that belonged to them made it without any damage. Go figure.

I'm spoiled I guess. Arizona has no real natural disasters to worry about, except the ongoing drought.

I use to live in Iowa for 16 years. We use to have Tornados not too many though. Nothing serious just a few funnel clouds. For the 16 years that Iived there I was never in an actual tornado until I went to visit my dad in Kansas. A twister touched down a mile from his house. Nothing was destroyed because only landed for a few minutes. It was pretty scary though but I would not worry about it. I have family that have lived there for 70 years and a tornado has not affected them. I would not worry about it=)
