    Default Tanning

I have never tanned before (other then the old fashion way, in the sun) and we have free tanning at my club. I am natually pale (half Irish, half Polish) and I like the pale look, but would like to get a little color just to even out my skin. I am actually a bit afraid of tanning (UV damage and cancer and all that) and don't plan on doing it often or getting really dark, but like I said, I would like to just pop in to smooth out my skin tone and maybe from there, start using a self-tanning lotion. I was just wondering if there is anything I have ot do before I tan? Any lotions, sunblock, etc? I would assume not because girls tans before their shifts and obviously you can't wear any lotion. Also was wondering about burning and how long to stay in to get different levels of tan...? This is such a foreign thing to me! Also, can it damage you eyes? What do you do when you're in there? Just stand and wait? Close your eyes?

u could go to a salon and get tanning lotions there or look them up online...i know someone here can help with a site. u definitly have to get a good lotion. when i 1st started tanning, i layed in for 10 minutes, but i tan very easy and am naturally a little darker then you. i think starting out, maybe spend like 3 to 5 minutes if you are as pale as you say. then once or twice a week raise it a minute or 2 until u are the color u wanna be. and yes...u are supossed to wear goggles (the salons sell those too). alot of girls dont wear them though, but it is safer to wear them. all you do is get in there and "wait", like u say. but its actually very relaxing to me, and im warning you its addictive!

Start with low minutes. The first time I went, I was only in there 5 minutes I believe (my booth has a max stand-time of 11 mins anyhow, so it's a little lower than most). ALWAYS wear tanning goggles! Shutting your eyes doesn't do crap. UV can penetrate your eyelids.

Make sure you keep your skin moisturized and don't get addicted to beautifully bronzed skin like I did!

I'm in love with the feeling of tanning. So warm. You can buy the goggles, and it really is necessary because that many harsh rays can do extreme damage to the eye even with your eyes closed. The goggles are only a few bucks at a beauty supply store. Invest in some. Start at a low level and work your way up, be sure to moisturize.

you can't just go to the bed and not put lotion on, i think then you'd fry
they have little packs to sell, just get one of those. i was really scared when i first started tanning now it's no big deal.

okay, yeah I've the little packs at my nail place. Could I just wear regular sunblock or are these packs specifically for tanning beds? So I guess I should tan after my shift so I don't have lotion on for dancing...

High-pressure beds I find are the best way to go. Ergoline has the best beds in my experience and you aren't "suppose" to burn in them. I only have to tan like twice weekly to maintain a nice color.

You should wear tanning lotion while you tan, it makes a better tan and its better for your skin. If you've never ever tanned before and you are pale, you may want to start as low as 2-3 minutes in the bed. I have a pale friend who tried tanning with me and came out beet red after only 5 minutes. Some beds have much stronger bulbs than others so you dont want to risk a burn. I would not tan before your shift, I'd tan after. The tanning lotions have a distinct smell and can make you stinky. You don't want to work your shift with tanning BO.

You don't want to wear sunblock because that goes against the whole purpose of tanning. You'll need a tanning lotion made for indoor tanning use, which you can get at tanning salons. I also love the Almost Famous brand, which someone else mentioned. I think it makes me tan much faster, and tanning lotions are good for your skin.
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.

Also avoid showering immediately after. I use to because of the smell and a woman at a salon I went to told me wait a couple hours atleast. It really does make a difference. I would think that just tanning for 5-10 min at a time wouldnt generate much odor though.

When you go to the salon, they should ask you to fill out a medical questionnaire, including your skin type, tanning history, etc. Then based on that they should give you the best recommendations regarding time and techniques.I have only tried the tanning lotions a few times many years ago and found them very expensive (40-80$ a bottle),and not overly helpful, but that's just me.I've been tanning for well over 15 years, and never had big compications. But I do make sure to put on a good rich lotion on my skin after tanning.
Later model tanning beds are high pressure, and you shouldn't burn. You would usually get a burn in an older bed with older lamps.
You can also put a towel on your face the first few times just to be on the safe side.
