What to do with my boy?

My cat that is. I'm moving to LA, and i really want to bring my cat from Australia to come and live with me.
Here's the problem. He's always been so spoilt. Allowed to wander outside and inside as he pleases. We'll be renting an apartment with only a very tiny chance of it being suitable for him to come and go as he pleases. Whenever i've tried to lock him in he meows ALOT...and i'm a pushover, i let him out. This won't work in LA.
I so want to have him with me... he presently lives with my sister on a beautiful property where he spends alot of time outdoors and with her cat. He is happy. I guess i'm just wondering if it's cruel to disturb his way of life to have him with me?
    I fear it is

Aw, what a decision. My cat Friday is the same way as yours--he was a stray when we find him and he's a rambling man. He likes to go out and come in as he pleases. We tried keeping him in for almost 6 months when we lived in an apartment once and he was MISERABLE. He meowed, pawed at the door, and moped most of the day, every day. He was obsessed. We moved to our new house where he can run around and he is very happy. At the same time, he is a real lover. He sleeps with us in our bed, wakes us up every morning, greets us at the door when we come home. Sometimes he just lays next to us and purrs for hours while we watch movies or whatever. He really loves us a lot. And we him.

If it came down to it, would he be happier living inside with us or outside with other people? I don't know. I guess you just have to decide that for him Good luck. I'm sure he'll be happy either way. I tend to think that freedom is best, but would I be strong enough to give him up so he could have it? I don't know.

Is he neutered? That helps alot when it comes to them wanting to go outside...

Yep, he's neutered He still likes to be allowed outdoors. He spends alot of time indoors, he just gets noisy when he hasn't the option to go outside.
He's taken to walking to the paddocks with my sister to check on her horse, and i just feel that this lifestyle is so natural for him. I really want him to be his happiest.

Mine is neutered as well--always has been. I feel it has more to do with how they are raised and what they're used to.

Leave him with your sister. You can't keep an outdoor cat indoors, it's mean.

We have lots of cats in our neighborhood who go outside. In Hollywood there are a lot of small gated complexes... usually the cats just hang out inside the gated part and don't stray around. I do occasionally see "Lost Cat" signs around, but no more so than anywhere else.

My cat is indoor only and has no interest in going outside. He's neutered and about 16 years old... I guess he's just too old for carousing! But there are plenty of outdoor cats in our neighborhood.

I would leave him. Cats need their independance once they've found it. It will suck for you, but perhaps you can get him back if you move somewhere near nature. I did so with my cat, my parents kept her a while, and she was fine with me in a house where she had room.

If he has a good home with your sister I think it would be selfish to disrupt his life in such a major way. I say leave him. I know that will be really hard for you, but it will probably be better for him.

It would probably be better to leave him. But, if you want to give it a shot, I guess you could always send him back to her if it doesn't work? I don't know what kind of stress he would go through from that travel, though. I mean you could still visit him when you go home.

I'm bringing him to LA. I can't stand the idea of losing him now.
I just had a call from my sister, who yesterday, found my Isa in a bad way. He'd been latched onto by a paralysis tick. He couldn't walk and his breathing was laboured. They took him to the hospiital, and he THANK GOD will be alright. He still can't walk and he is weak, but the vet says he'll be ok.
He's such a sweetheart, he was even purring when being petted on the way to the vet.
An indoor life may not be great, but i'm not sure he'll be up for much of the outdoors anymore.

Teach him how to walk on a leash, that way he can enjoy the outdoors safely!

Im in the process of teaching my cats how to walk on a leash. Well, its a kitty harness. They love it!

I started at first just putting the harness on and lettign them run around the hosue with it on, to get used to how it feels. Then I attached the leash, and let them get used to that. Now we go for short walks outside, they always lead me. I never try to lead them, or pull on the leash at all. I give them lots of space.

The only problem Im running into with this is that when I open the front door now, they come running cause they want to go for a walk. They are indoor only cats, and Im scared on day they will get out by accident.

But, since your cat is an outdoor one anyway, he knows where the front door leads to anyway, but anyway....its something you can try, so your happy, hes happy, and he stays safe.

I would probably leave him. The travel alone would be upsetting for the little guy. Maybe you could get a kitten when you move into your new appartment. It wouldn't be the same, of course, but I find it's tough getting used to cat-free life when you find yourself suddenly cat-less.

He can walk today. He is still weak and a little shaky on his hind legs, but he seems better. I'm going home to get him in a few months when he has fully recovered.

I have a large black cat we got from another family when they no longer wanted him. he was allowed to roam freely like yours..in and out as he wanted. my husband and i refuse to let any of our cats especialy him outside due to him being declawed (done before we got him) and hes 14yrs old and cant have his shots anymore. it has taken him a long time to get used to being inside, he yowls and yowls sometimes all night 9still ocasionaly does). sometimes as a treat i may take him with me and walk him around the neighborhood on my shoulder...but thats it.
