    Default The cockroach myth

There is a myth out there that cockroach bodies will live for weeks without their heads.

Recently I had the opportunity to apply some scientific testing to this question.

I caught a big fat bastard and put him into a ragu pizza jar bottle with air holes cut into the top and pondered how to go about doing this.

Using a pair of tweezers I re-caught him in the bottle (hint: do not fully remove the cap) and held it fast (there is a great deal of wiggling on the critter's part.) Using a sharp paring knife, I deftly removed the head.

Upon quick removal of the head, the body went limp nearly immediately and had no response to stimuli (poke and a match.)

Hopefully PETA will not picket me for my animal testing.

Yeah... watch it! PETA will be knocking on your door... I'm SO going to report you Next try the chicken one however I think that one is actually true that the chicken's body does still operate a little after the head has been chopped clear (just nerves going haywire).

How big was your cockroach? Did it fly? Well I do not think Peta care about the bug.

After a Super Typoon in Guam. We had no electricity, water, AC. I use to live right next to the jungle. I had my window open. A cock roach came into the house. You know the big big ones that fly. I tried to kill it with my shoe. But it will not die. It just kept running!

I am just curious, what climate is this bug from? Did you notice anything about the cock roach when he had his head on? Like is body seem to be able to take a lot pressure?Or That the cock roach seem to be able to sqeeze thru things in tight places? How did you cacth it?

    LOL Deo.. Nice experiment.

I performed a similar experiment years back with a bee. When I was working at the coffee shop, I smacked one with a paper. The blow severed its head. I left him in that spot for about 3 weeks (right by a window). It lived for that full 3 weeks before finally dying. They don't need their heads to breathe, but they need them to eat. It died of starvation. Heh.

My way of getting rid of cockroaches is a lighter and some hair spray.

Haha- maybe their heads have to be removed in a certain way? It is true!

They use them to test 'instinct' vs. neurological responses. One of my texts has a charming picture of a headless cockroach suspended over a tray of water by a little piece of string around it's belly. So dignified.

Maybe it needed a certain percentage of the head, or was the wrong bread?

Intriguing, but I'm not going to try it at home. I'm sure in FLA I can find one easily enough.

    Still I'm not eating one.

I heard somewhere about a headless chicken that lived and was like, a sideshow act for awhile or something. Apparently it's head was severed so high on the neck that a portion of brain remained, enough to govern involuntary body functions, they fed it thru it's open esophagus, crazy.

Yes the headless chicken is true, theres also a case I just read about in Douglas Morrisons "How We heal" of just a chicken heart being kept alive for 29 years until the lab assistant forgot to clean and feed it...

Cockroaches though its just seems that no matter how you (think) you kill them, they come back to life a minute later. Resilliant buggers!

Yes! The chicken one is true! I have witnessed it... When I was in Iraq I had a pet owl (seriously...) Since they only eat raw meat, we had to buy chickens and well, chop their heads off, pluck them and pull the meat. (I was the plucker-not the head chopper offer...) Anyway, sure enough, that sucker was still kicking, even after the head was long gone. Ok, now that I grossed everyone out, off to bed...

    Mike the headless chicken!

When they chopped off his head they left behind what's esentially the brain stem which controls breathing etc, so he lived. Life is weird sometimes.
