    azaia allergic to milk....

Of course, Ill ask doc. at our next appointment....

I pretty much concluded that Azaia is allergic to cows milk.(shes breastfed) I LOVE LOVE LOVE milk...when I was prego with her I literally drank a gallon a day------no lie----. Now shes fussy when I drink it,and not pooping as much(shes straining and grunting and obviously uncomfortable) and spiting up a lot,and I can hear little noises in her belly.Shes got all the symptoms.
So since I gotta cut the dairy..what are some good supplements? And what are all the common dairy products that are strong enough to affect her? I mean, will one egg hurt? (thats dairy right? duh.) I was kinda counting on drinking plenty of whole milk (like I always have) to help with weight gain, but cant do that now)

    Thanks guys

Are you looking to supplement your calcium intake? You could take Viactiv, which is a calcium chew for women. You could also switch to soy milk. I think that might help. I started using vanilla soy milk recently and I really like it.

    Just my thoughts!

Yes, because I need calcium and the fatty stuff. Ill check out Viactiv. Most babies allergic to cow milk are also allergic to soy. Does that taste good anyway?
    Thank you.

Digestive Advantage (Ganaden) makes a kids version of the lactose intolerance pills I take:

    eggs are not dairy either...

And I love soy milk (pretty don't even buy regular milk anymore.) It comes from a plant, so I don't understand why babies who are allergic to milk would also be allergic to soy. It also has lots of calcium, but you could also give her calcium enriched orange juice.

They shouldn't be allergic to Soy. A lot of babies that have cow-milk allergies and can't use the regular formula are often switched to soy-based formulas. So, I'm pretty sure you can switch to drinking Soy Milk, Xio.

But first you need to make sure that the cow's milk that you're drinking is what's upsetting the baby's tummy. Any kind of dairy can of course, but there are many other foods that could be the culprit. Check out the list below:

*Chocolate: Unfortunately for the chocolate-loving Mommy, this one will most likely upset the baby's tummy.

*Spices: Like Garlic, Cinnamon, Curry, Chili Pepper.

*Citrus Fruits (AND their juices): Oranges, Lemons, Limes, Grapefruit, Strawberries, Kiwi, Pineapple, etc..

*Veggies: Onion, Cabbage, Garlic, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, Peppers, etc..

    *Too much Caffeine!

I had to stop eating lettuce, although I love my salads, and I love lettuce on sandwiches. I found that Hunter was really miserable and gassy after I ate it. So, I haven't had it in about 2 1/2 months.

Another big thing was giving up Orange Juice. Hunter's er.. "Output" made his tush RAW and the skin actually BLED at one point. It was the citrus.

Good luck in finding out what the culprit is. It really could be anything. You'll just have to monitor the baby closely after she nurses. And if it helps, write down what you eat during the day, so that you can pin-point what's causing the problem.

Thanks guys. I know its the milk. Have not been drinking a lot since its too cold to go to the store and get it. SO when i FINALLY got milk, i drank it like crazy and she started acting fussy. Then i didnt have it for a few days again, and she was fine. Had milk the next day, she was fussy. So im pretty sure thats it.
Also, I was reading about it online and thats where I read about the being allergic to soy as well.
Emily...shes breastfed,so no orange juice. just a couple weeks old! But I can drink calcium OJ....thats a good excuse for my husband to buy the good juice I like!! (the expensive kind .lol)

    Thanks everybody.
PS..i thought eggs were dairy. good, i love my eggs!

I'm allergic to milk too. I drink almond milk. It tastes just like cow's milk. (Soy in large amounts is actually very bad for you.)

the benefits of soy far out weigh the risks:

I didn't know you couldn't drink orange juice while breastfeeding. I thought you might be interested in other sources of calcium. There are many but that's a good one.

LOL...u CAN drink OJ while breastfeeding (though some babies can not handle the citrus in the breastmilk)...I meant to say...my BABY is only getting milk,no OJ. Dont think a newborn can have OJ ...thats what I was saying.

    thanx for that link

i would like to jsut clear up that INTOLERANT to lactose and ALLERGIC to milk are different. so the children's version of lactaid pills should NOT be used until you know she is not ALLERGIC as opposed to INTOLERANT. if she is indeed allergic and not intolerant then you would have to avoid ALL dairy and start reading labels because trace amounts of dairy are in many products. (im allergic to dairy, and know all too much about allergies)

    Love it!

I know about that difference ^^^ intolerant usually shows up later, not in infancy, from what i read.
and even the tiny small amounts of dairy will go through my breastmilk and affect her? this is a dumb question, but what are some things dairy is in that u might not think of...that might affect her?
if i drink a teaspoon of milk...its gonna get her?

a lot of breads too. glazes on things, butter is in so much, burger buns are buttered and then put on the grill for example. you will jsut have to start asking abotu everything. i jsut found out im allergic to one of my favorite things (a QDoba burrito) because they use milk in their "adobo seasoning" of their meats. Whey is dairy. milk choc is bad but dark chocolate can be ok if it's marked milk-free. obv sour cream, creams, cheeses, ice cream, cream cheese... for fake chese (Veggie Cheese is my fave brand) there are some really tasty brands, and cream cheese there's Tofutti (sooo yum) and for soy milk, i agree, vanilla soy is mucho tasty by Silk. Choc Soy milk i reccommend 8th Continent.

Cereal has dairy, read the labels. smart start is a good one wihtout milk.

some body moisturizers have milk in them. who knows if she will get hives from that stuff.

you shoudl also knwo that allergies range from mild to life-threatening. but over time consuming the allergen (milk) will decrease her tolerance and cause the allergy to get more severe. PM me for more info.

    Love it!

My little one can't deal with milk products either. He's not exclusive breastfeeding anymore and we only found out in the last month or so.... I have to say I wish I had known from the beginning because it would have made life less hellish.. babies can make life hellish if there is something wrong.

A teaspoon will probably affect her.. what I'd do is go completely off dairy, COMPLETELY for at least a month, as dairy takes a couple of weeks to completely leave your system, and then try a tiny taste of it. Like a little in tea or something and watch her carefully over the next few days. Any moodiness or sleep disruptions or facial rashes will probably indicate that even a small amount is not ok. With cases like this it's not the lactose, so lactose pills are useless, it's the milk protein and that passes through your breast milk. Even small amounts of allergens can cause problems...

Whether or not you choose soy for yourself I think it's risky and scary to expose a newborn or growing child to it. But everyone has to do what they think is best...

It's really hard to not eat dairy. A nourishing food with calcium is bone broth and it's easy to make too. http://www.westonaprice.org/foodfeatures/broth.html
