    Default Memory...

Is there anything you can do (not take) for memory? I have taken fish oil, ginko and other things before but I really want to try things like flashcards or memory testers and things like that. Perhaps there's games or assignment type things you can do to help your memory?

there are self-help tapes u can get to improve memory that have exercises on them designed to improve memory.
u could probably find a free one if u did a google search rather than have to go out and buy one.

Here is a little something I have permantly attached underneath my PC screen. Got it from Virgin Blue's in-flight magazine

You've probably heard the saying that goldfish only have a three-second memory. So, do you suffer from goldfish syndrome? Forget people's names only moments after they tell you? Have trouble remembering the time of your next appointment and... what was I saying again? Memory expert Kevin Jay North gives us some help.

    1. ASSOCIATION
One of the most effective memory strategies is simple thought association. For example, if you have a plane to catch at 2pm, try to find a link between the time and the plane. Be creative: A plane has two wings and it takes off at 2pm. Or, at 2pm I have TWO catch my plan.

    2. REPETITION
Rote learning has been a method used to improve basic memory for centuries - and it's easy. Try this: as soon as you are introduced to someone, repeat their name in your head until it sticks.
Or if you're a visual person, try writing it down and take time to visualise the name on th epiece of paper - just wait until they leave first!

    3. LINKING
When you have a series of things to remember, create an animated story in your mind that links each item. For example, if you have to buy sausages and washing detergent, make up a story that includes all the unrelated items - maybe you dropped some sausage on your shirt during dinner and then cleaned it with detergent.

OK, so it might sound silly, but you'll be surprised just how useful it can be. Visit www.thememorypage.net for more.

^^^ LOL - my mum used to use these methods when she was teaching and still does. Shes a huge fan of the linking method. For instance if Im going to the shops to get a few things she'll yell out "Remember bun, shoe tree!" (Notice the words rhyme with the numbers one, two, three - there's also door and hive etc :-D) So to remember the first item on the list you have to picture it as a bun or with a bun - what ever works for you, and the second item you picture as a, or with shoes and the third a tree and so on. It sort of works if you bother to do it, all you have to remember is how many items you have to buy - which some people manage to remember more easilly buy remembering as bun, shoe, tree instead of one two three lol!

I wasn't meaning to remember specifics but just memory in general.. remembering day-to-day events.

Anyway, I picked up some books at the library on it!

    Oh god, the same...

I cried really bad last week because I was walking down my street and didn't remember my neighbours house! I didn't remember it being there, the colour, the style.. nothing. I just simply didn't remember that house existing.

And then the other night I went to give my parrot his medicine and I mixed it all up but forgot to PUT IN THE ACTUAL MEDICINE... when I couldn't find it and couldn't find it... I was stressed... I finally found it... on the floor of my livingroom.. I dropped it while I was walking - forgetting I was holding it!

It's been so bad lately, I was hoping to work on it.

I used to take ginkgo biloba for memory, and it helped a little. Also... when I started playing the guitar I HAD to have a better memory, LOL! Maybe learning a new instrument will help, heh.

It sounds silly, but look into the Nintendo DS game "Brain Age." It has a lot of mini games like very basic math, reading out loud, glancing at a group of numbers and then remembering the order of lowest to highest numbers, etc. Honestly, since I started playing it, I've been a lot sharper mentally--just better concentration skills, I guess. Ya don't use it, ya lose it.

Oh and MAKE SURE you are getting enough sleep! Nothing destroys your concentration (often the cause of forgetting stuff) like insufficient rest. And other health-related things can be a factor like diabetes, blood clots, etc.

The Hubby's mom is developing Alzheimer's so I'm trying to remember every avenue we've explored for trying to help her. It's so scary....hope it's temporary, Lys.

It's not called Brain Age... it's called Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training.... and holy HELL... I remembered THAT.

This is an old post, and funny enough, I have been using Brain Training program every day for a few months now. My brain got to age 20 and I got bored for a bit but started doing it again. Now that I -really- think of it, I haven't had as many 'freak out' problems as forgetting large things. My keys and glasses yeah, but not the neighbours house or very important things. Maybe it HAS worked.

I used to have really fucked up memory problems. I would be driving along and all of a sudden I'd look around and be like, "omg, where am I? where am I going? what am I doing? fuck!"

My therapis showed me this breathing excercise that I thought was totally stupid and wouldn't work on me because I didn't believe it would, but it did. You stick one finger in your belly button, and the other finger right above your butt crack, and breath until you kind of feel them connect. It feels weird. Then you can remember what was going on. He said it connected the past and the future.

I'd like to see how you did that while driving!

I seem to have developed a photographic memory...meaning I don't think I had it in high school but I definitely do now. A lot of it is probably my neverending school (ie practice); I also don't write things down, forces me to remember...stuff like that.
