Default Pissed off at my accountant!

I got a letter from the City of Los Angeles saying that I have to register as a business, pay a penalty fee for not doing it sooner, and pay taxes on my dancer income from 2005. I went down there today and showed them that I made less than $5000 as a dancer in 2005 (I started in September and only danced part-time), so they gave me some things to sign to waive the penalty and setup fees.

However, I still owe them $110 because I didn't file with them by March 1, 2006. I didn't know I was supposed to! My asshole accountant should've told me that. I called him after I got the letter last week and he said I don't owe them anything, but it turns out I have to file with them by March 1 for that to be true. Stupid fucker! I don't have an extra $110 lying around!

At least now I know to go in by next March 1 so I won't have to pay it again... but I'm pretty pissed off!

It could have been worse... But yes! I'd be pissed too if my acc told me I didn't need to do anything and then I got fined!!!

Blame the bureaucracy that feeds off of fines and un-necessary paperwork.

Really just going to have to swallow it hard on this one. Not enough to take him to small claims court, but I would make an issue out of it with him. If he has bosses notify them, if he doesn’t tell him that you will not give him any referrals. Might actually pay it depending on how much he sees you as a business asset.

There's an idea... but I doubt he'd pay it. I haven't given him any referrals anyway (everybody out here already has their own tax guy). He's really good with state and federal, but he doesn't do city taxes, so I guess he just slipped up. I am going to send him an email and set him straight though, just so he doesn't make the same mistake with anybody else in the future.

He's REALLY good with performing artist and movie industry jobs and their unique tax needs; his clients are all actors, crew people, strippers, etc. He can find the greatest writeoffs and he's saved me a boatload of money in the past, so I guess I can forgive him.

LA has city income taxes? Yet another reason to hate that place.

It's not an income tax... basically, they're saying that if you're self-employed or an independent contractor, then you have to register as a business and pay a business tax. It's sort of like Vegas requiring dancers to get a business license. L.A. does allow performing artists to exempt $300,000 in income from this requirement, but you have to file by March 1 of the same year (effectively claiming income you haven't earned yet).

Such a hassle. Grrr. Stupid bureaucracy.
