    Default Yay Implanon!

    I've been on depo for 4 years now and love it... and I wanted implanon but it was $300 plus $100 visit. ARGH!

    I went in yesterday to get depo and when I said I -JUST- got medicare the lady looked at me like I was insane and said, "Why not just get implanon?"

    Turns out, it's only $29.50 with medicare!!!!

    Holy batmonkeys.

    Here's to $10 a year birth control!!!!

    YAY!

    ---

    Side note. The doctor asked me if I could be pregnant. I said no. She asked if I'd used condoms, I said yes.... she looked at me and said, "you don't sound like you're being honest."

    ...pause... "Well I haven't had vaginal sex either...."

    .... "OKAY! Let's get give you the implant, shall we?!"

    what is implanon?
    im surprised you like depo so much...i was on it for like 6 or 7 months and it was TERRIBLE for me!! it made me skip like 4 months of periods and when i finally had my period, i bled for like 2 months straight. i had to stop taking the shot.

    Yeah, most people don't like it... it's perfect for me!

    Implanon is a small stick-shaped implant they put in your arm that's the same hormones as depo (and thus the same reactions) but lasts 3 years.

    I need a new bc. I hope this works for you. Depo made me crazy. Are they the exact hormones as depo? If not I might just give it a try.

    Didn't they used to have something like that called Norplant? I know Norplant got into some shit because of welfare-related ickiness, so perhaps this is a reincarnation under a different name?

    Yeppers. Norplant was 4 or 5 little sticks that went in your arm in a fan shaped spread. It didn't last for four ears I don't think. I think it was 3. Could be wrong though.

    NOTE: Implanon MIGHT be an Australian-only thing. Not sure.

    Actually they are different. Implanon is etonogestrel while Depo is medroxyprogesterone acetate a derivative of progestrone. Although they do have in common is the way it works.

    Implanon info
    Depo info

    Its available in the US too. They stopped norplant years ago too. I think Im going to talk to my doctor then about it.

    Err... yeah. :p I guess I meant that they would react exactly the same as if you had Depo. You'd have, pretty much, the exact same result... although MAYBE slightly more in degree of severity.

    yeah but we figure out that it was from dairy products not the implanon at all so that was a bit of a scare but other than that it is fantastic!!!!!!

    I want to look into this. I want some sort of relatively-thoughtless birth control. I was thinking about an IUD, personally but this implant seems to be a better option. Is it available in canada?

    just for the record... my Dr has removed as many as she has put in (including mine). it does have a completely different range of side effects to depo.

    all ya can do is try it though. (my 2 closest friends also stacked on a dress size or 2 and had it removed).

    at least your posts will serve as a record of the changes that happen or don't.

    Does this make you gain weight like depo does? Or have depression side effects?

    my list of terrors were:

    * random spotting
    * significant weight gain
    * depression
    * anxiety
    * massive boobs (i don't know if that's good or bad)
    * crying at the drop of a hat

    the upside is that my period came back after about 1 month post-removal

    Update:

    I am having severe depression over this. I'm trying to see if it'll wear off, but I've been cranky, snappy and severely depressed. Whenever I get a call on the phone, I think it's work and start crying... mumbling something about how I just want a vacation.. or something. Which is strange, because I love my job, I'm not burnt out and I'm always happy when I get there... it's the getting there that seems to make me cry.

    I'll be happy for a second and then start crying all over again because I suddenly, and for no reason, got depressed.

    Again, I'm waiting it out.
