    Default What to do First?

I got invited to join a women's soccer league, kickass!! I havn't played in years but we have some time to practice until the season officially begins in January.

So its time to shape up! My health is not the best these days, and its from the obvious things: smoking, stress, not always eating the best.

I need to drop a few bad habits, and start a few new good ones. But, at least in the drug/alki recover arena, they say to take it one day at a time....

So, what should I do first?

    1. Quit smoking
    2. Start on a healthy eating regiment (no crash diets for me, my weight is fine)
    3. Re-join a gym and get personal training

Technically, I should do all of this at once, but I know myself, I will fail miserably if I don't prioritize.

I'm thinking, quit smoking first. I am always winded, coughing, congested. Its also the toughest thing for me to do.

Conversely, I need to get in shape FAST for the soccer season. Perhaps I can just tone down on the stoges and focus on training my fat ass?

I enjoy working out and my eating habits aren't too awful. I could benefit from eating more fruits/veggies and less Wendy's, hehe.

Advice from the loverly striptease goddesses?

Quit smoking, since that's going to be the hardest. Once you accomplish that, the rest will be downhill!

If you start training--alot of running in soccer, yes?--that alone may kick your ass enough to compell you to quit the cigs.

    Best of luck, K!

Quit smoking, and don't do ANYTHING ELSE (diet, exercise) until you've got 6 weeks under your belt. You need to let yourself eat anything you want.

Well, no amount of training will help you out on that field if you're hacking up a lung.

So I say to stop smoking and start training at the same time. You know you can't smoke for awhile before your workout or you won't have the lung capacity to get through it properly and, I find that, after a workout, you don't really want to smoke for quite awhile.

Of course, none of this has helped me to quit, so you can take that advice with a big ol grain of salt. Good luck and kick some butt out there.

Dylan, I played ice hockey in college. But I fear I can't pass the physical for the woman's squad.

My original reply considered that! I was going short cut the jokes at my expense by saying I "almost" could make the team.

Kat - will I be too much of a suck up if I say that I am so turned on right now?

Kidding. Quit smoking first - you will feel better about everything. And don't worry about anything else - don't stress about weight or anything while your dealing with that.

Really, just kidding? One of those sexy daggers ran through my crotchtal area at your post.

I've played sports and worked out as a smoker before. I LOVE a cigarette after the gym. I know, fucked up right?

The soccer team is happening no matter what. Actually, C and A, two colleagues of mine also on the team, both smoke. But not nearly as much as I do. Our work is very stressful I tell ya!

With that said, I've been trying to get a hold of my doc to see if it would be right for me to take Wellbutrin or something. I love pharamceutical relief!

But GAINING WEIGHT!!!! OH HELL NO! Sorry folks, I'm not going to put on more weight. Ive only put on a few pounds since I put down the lucite heels, but I'm so untoned. I can't gain weight. I lopped off my hair into a bob. Fat AND short hair, uh uh!

Isn't it stupid, our fear of quitting smoking because of the weight gain? Yeah, pretty rational thinking from a woman whose doctor told her she was a perfect candidate for adult early onset emphasema......when I was 23!

I used to teach fitness, and I ALWAYS had a smoke after each class. hehe, it felt so good.

The weight gain will all go to your boobs. BIG HUGE BOOBS! No serious, it did for me. Didn't last, but still.

I was on Wellbutrin and it helped me to quit (wish I had never gone back to it) but DAMN what that shit did to my libido! I wanted to have sex day and night.

And that was when I was married and found out later he was gay, so no sex for me. I must have looked like a freakin' cat in heat.

Wellbutrin really works. Maybe you can just try Zyban? That's the same as Wellbutrin without the antidepressant in it.

I have found that you can't subtract something from your life without replacing it with something else.
So, if you quit smoking, the best thing to do is replace it with working out or you will go back to smoking or a bad habit like anal sex will take its place.

    Good luck.

Exercise and nutrition are far more important to getting in shape than quitting smoking. I wait till I get in my car before I light up, but yeah, you can see me leave the gym with a protien shake in one hand and a Marlboro light in the other 5 times a week...

knowing how evil the nicotine monster can be - i would do the things you can do easily first... ie. eat right, exercise and work your way up to kicking the cigs.

if you fail at giving up smoking, you'll be so mad at yourself that you'll throw out everything else out too...

it's easier to eat some clean food than throw out a packet of marlboro lites.

i say small steps. do the easiest thing first.

I agree. Quit smoking first. One of our gents ( Jay_Zeno ?) here gave me a very helpful tip when I quit several years ago.... black licorice! Something about it helps curb then desire to smoke.... it was a great help to me so maybe give it shot.

Not fucked up at all...I still do the same thing. I'd say the first thing on your list should be to stop smoking...easier said than done though, right? I'm actually wanting to quit smoking now. I say we should start a support thread and whoever wants to quit, we can all do it together. And, not trying to highjack your thread, but I've been looking at this: http://www.nosmokeamerica.com/

I don't like licorice at all! One of the few flavors I'm not into! Soccer practice begins tomorrow, nothing is done yet!

Argghhhh.....all of these different suggestions?!? What to do?

huh-- I've never been through the process of quiting smoking-- I hope you get lots of nicotine patches, gum, and that little inhaler thing that you can put in your mouth like a cig to damp down the oral urges.

I know when I want to get in shape cardio wise, I start out on the elliptical for a couple hours a day. Initially my breathing is fucked up, and I'm sweating like a hog, and my heart is going crazy. A week or so later on, it takes A LOT to get me to the point I was that first few days...and really, I was surprised I wasn't sweating more at this point even when I was pushing myself to go really fast on the elliptical.

There's this book (and I don't know the title, but I'm sure someone does) where you read the book all the way through and it tells you EXACTLY what to do throughout the book. In fact, it pushes you to smoke A LOT so you get really sick of it, and then it emphasizes that last cigarette. My friend quit smoking and told me that by the time he got to the last cigarette, he didn't want it-- but the book told him that he HAD to make himself smoke that last one. And he did.

Highly recommended by him. Sorry I can't help with the title.

One of the tricks I've heard for quitting smoking is to try and satisfy the urge to do something with your mouth and give yourself the relaxing benefits of deep breathing at the same time. One guy would carry carrot sticks around in a cigarette case, and when he wanted a smoke, he'd grab one, crunch a bite off and eat it, take a long deep breath in and out, then repeat 'til the carrot stick was gone. He said it made a big difference to do the inhaling, not just give his mouth something to do.

Hmmm...I think you should start the gym/personal trainer first. Healthy eating, next and then work on the cancer sticks.

The only reason being...when you are getting your body into shape...you'll find it harder and harder to keep smoking. The more "in fit" you get, the more smoking will inhibit that.

    Gym, eating, then smoking.
