    Default She can't pole dance.

    *sigh*

So I cast this beautiful girl to play the stripper in my short. She's from Mexico, only been in L.A. for a couple of weeks, and a pretty damn good actress. She needs direction, but that's my job to give it, and she takes it really well. A few runs with the other actor and voila, they have great chemistry and it looks great.

The trouble is she is late for everything - like WAY late - and now it turns out she can't pole dance. I specifically said in the casting call that I needed someone who can pole dance, and I think she thought I meant someone who could play a stripper and look sexy onstage. She's played strippers before, but she didn't have to do any pole tricks. On this one, I NEED her to do a really kickass pole trick; that's why my lead character is so drawn to her.

I can do a few basic moves, but I'm not a pole monkey. I guess I'll teach her what I know and try to work around it, but dammit, I'm annoyed. I REALLY wanted just one superfly pole trick. Oh well.

The lateness I can fix, at least. I'm having a reading with the entire cast on Sunday and I told her it was at 7 pm, and I stressed that she absolutely needs to be there at 7 on the dot. I told everyone else it's at 7:30. So I figure she'll show up around 8 and we can proceed with the meeting... here's hoping.

Anybody else got an idea for a killer attention-getter, now that it can't be a pole trick?

you could always have her filmed at the top of the pole and then slowly come down, bonus points if you have a spinning pole and it looks like she's slithering around it on the way down.

sounds like she needs to practice one good move. if she's serious about acting, she should be willing to meet your needs on this.

Maybe something really eye-catching on the floor? Or a hot wax show?

How strong is she? I'm sure you could probably help her learn something cool if she's strong. She ought to be able to at least do an invert or something if she's not scared to try.

*I* can't do an invert. I don't think I have the muscle. At least she wears the same shoe size I do, so I don't have to buy her a pair of stripper heels. I'm just gonna clean my white pair, and they look better on her than they do on me! (White against her skin looks sooooo pretty!)

I like the idea of having her at the top of the pole and sliding down, especially since her character's name is Angel... it's kind of a Christmas story and she plays the angelic role (if a cokehead stripper can be angelic). Gives it kind of an angel-descending quality. That's probably what I'll do if she can climb the damn thing.

I need to install the pole in my apartment and play with her on it for a bit. Or I'll just invite her to the location early and we'll have Pole Class 101 for an hour or so.

^ Why not use a double for the kick-ass pole trick? This is film, not stage, right? If you have a good editor, can find somebody who physically resembles her and have enough time to take a huge variety of shots that you can pick and choose from to construct the scene, I think you'd be golden.

Trying to train a girl with no pole experience to do a "kick-ass pole trick" is not just going to be monumentally frustrating (maybe funny here and there) but could be a real mess if she just ends up sliding down the pole and smacking her head against the floor.

I'm an actress who shows up on time AND I'm a pole monkey...if she doesn't work out...or if you need a double...AND I'm in SD...

TOO, I thought about using a double but I haven't got the time or money. Besides, I want her face in the shot since it's the first time we see her in the movie. I'm not going to teach her anything crazy because of the safety factor, but a slide down ought to work okay.

Sunshine, I wish I'd known before! The next time I cast a stripper, I'll let you know.

Don't get the impression that I'm not satisfied with my casting. I am. I really like her and I think she's great for the part. I just wish she wasn't so damn late for everything, and I wish she hadn't told me she could pole dance when I asked her twice!

She doesn't have to climb up the pole with editing. Ladder, have her sit at the top and put her shoes on and then get on the pole, pull away ladder, start filming. There's also a really easy move that looks breathtaking where the girl (are you using a spinning pole or what?) swings her leg for momentum and jumps. Instead of wrapping her leg around the pole she folds them underneath her as she swings aroung the pole. After once or twice she'll be able to control momentum to the point where it looks like she's swinging like a basket before landing on the stage in a kneeling position. Cue white light, bubbles and maybe some fake glittery snow and you've got your angel intro.

i'm sure she can be taught.

if she wants the gig, she has to practise. get her down to your local club before opening (i'm sure they'd do it for a credit)... to do what the 'real' girls do. muck round till we figure it out.

i reckon there'd be a stripper who would teach her one move... for a sexy fee. ;-)

I think the best bet is to cross your fingers and hope she's flexible...splits against the pole would be good.

There are pole dance classes all over there right? I'd just get her a private session for half an hour or something. I mean that kind of intensive training would probably take care of learning a trick and couldn't cost that much.

I took a pole class here that was over $200 for six weeks, and I don't have that... but good thought on maybe half an hour. I'll call my old pole teacher and see what she'd charge.

Next time you are looking for a poledancer to cast...search poldancing!

I had a casting company contact me via my dancer website. They had seen videos of me!

That is how I was found...I have done 7 different roles, in various different productions. My last one as the dancer on the pole in Santa's Slay with Bill Goldberg!

    HEY EVERYBODY IN L.A.!!

If you're not doing anything tonight, I've got a cast reading and I'm gathering all my actors 'round for the first time. After the reading, I'm holding back two actresses who are going to be playing strippers, and we're having Stripper 101 class. I have a pole in my apartment.

I'd rather someone with more skill than I have did this. I can't pay, but I'm making three different kinds of really delicious dip so there will be food, and it'll be fun. I'd appreciate it majorly if one of you L.A. girls wanted to help a sister out! I'm in Hollywood. Feel free to email!

It's an indie short for festival competition, and to showcase myself as a writer/director. The actors benefit from the exposure as well.
