Default Study Says Illegal Immigrants Boost Texas Economy

So much for them hurting the economy... at least in Texas anyway. I bet The Minutmen lost their minds when they heard about the results of this study

The Texan economy would have been almost $18 billion poorer in the last fiscal year without illegal immigrants who added to state coffers but were a drain on local government, says a report by the state comptroller. (snip)

(Snip) "Undocumented immigrants produced $1.58 billion in state revenues, which exceeded the $1.16 billion in state services they received. However, local governments bore the burden of $1.44 billion in uncompensated health care costs and local law enforcement costs not paid for by the state," Strayhorn added.

The net increase to state revenues came from payments such as sales taxes and user fees.
    (snip)
The essential humanity of men can be protected and preserved only where government must answer--not just to the wealthy, not just to those of a particular religion, or a particular race, but to all its people.

While the state economy of Texas might have gained ($0.42 billion according to the study), the state government did so by not compensating local governments for health care and law enforcement costs (i.e., per the study, "However, local governments bore the burden of $1.44 billion in uncompensated health care costs and local law enforcement costs not paid for by the state," Strayhorn added." So if the state government of Texas had to compensate the local governments, instead of forcing them to accept the financial costs involved, the actual number is actually about one billion dollars in the red re: government revenues spread across both state and local governments, per the actual numbers provided by the study [$1.44 - ($1.58-$1.16) = $1.02 billion loss].

Amazing how lobbyists can make anything sound good.

I don't blame you Tara, they used all the right words but in such a way one scanning the report doesn't get the whole picture.

Wait... Did I miss something? When did the Pew Research become a lobby group?

Not in my opinion. I jumped the gun there.

I heard a guy on the radio talking about this yesterday (in John & Ken's time slot, but it wasn't John & Ken - must be on vacation). He said, "If your business model depends on illegal activity - on CRIME - then you need a new business model." He explained that economics don't give you the right to break the law; you can't build a business model on manufacturing faulty tires just to save money or buying slaves to save on labor costs. He then went on to add that drugs and prostitution probably also factor heavily into the economy, but that doesn't mean that "meth dealers and street whores" should be lauded for it.

I thought it was an excellent point and it merited repeating.

My bachelor's from the university is in business administration. We had to take a "Social Responsibilities of Business" class, which was taught by one of the youngest, and one of the better professors at the entire university at the time.

It would be interesting to see what he would do with this topic, although he left that university and I don't remember the school where he accepted a new teaching position. As he was quite liberal, for being a business prof, I'd be interested in what kind of debate he'd create in his class on this topic. But then, it seems ethics/morality don't much matter in either business or politics anymore.
