    Default Water Fast

I was wondering if any of you ladies had any experience with a water fast? I would try a juice one, but I dont' have a juicer and I dont' want all that extra sugar in me. I'm doing the juice fast to lose some weight, but to mostly flush out my system so that I can start my body off to a fresh start of healthy eating.

why don't you try the master cleanser? that is more effective than a straight up water fast - and you should never fast on water for more than three days.

Juice fasts you can do for a long time though. I did a thirty day fast in July/Aug of this year and felt wonderful afterwards. I just used my cheap, thirty dollar juicer from wally world.

If that's why you're not drinking juice, why don't you get the fresher juices in the refridgerated sections? That's what I do...like odwalla, bolthouse, fresh samantha, naked juice, etc.

A juice fast is awesome for you, well worth the investment. And you'll loose weight w/out sacrificing nutrients.

I did a thirty day one also, it did feel great. I also included vegetable soup - no cream or chunks or anything, just ones like tomato soup and butternut squash. It was hard at first, but you really do kill a lot of those bad cravings for a while. You feel like you sort of have a clean slate and don't want sweets or junk food or anything.

You can do vegtable juices in the blender without losing all the nutrients...cucumber lemon smoothies are good (two cucumbers and two peeled lemons or limes with a splash of vinegar).

The other fasts include paprika and a little molasses...spicy foods are supposed to boost your metabolism and a little bit of carbohydrates keeps you from getting super tired.

I did a detox where I only ate raw and living (like sprouts) food. It also consisted of daily enemas and a colonic at the end of the week. I felt amazing when I was done.

I heard that tea and tablet cleansers are not good for your because they act like laxatives which stretch out your intestine removing healthy elasticity. According to the practitioner who led mine, the best way to fast is with natural food that are unprocessed and organic. She also told me that sprouts have an enormous amount of nutrients in them so these are good to implement in detox programs. You can make sprouts by soaking beans (like mung, lentill, pea etc) in water. They will sprout in a day or two.

    Here's how you do it

Let us know how it goes.

I would think that daily enemas would be just as unhealthy as laxatives. Dammit VG where are you? You coudl've at least waited another day to have the baby so you could answer my freaking thread..

I was refering to water only enemas that are done by flushing water into your lower intestine. This involves laying down and placing a tube an inch or so inside. Then water from a water bottles is flushed in you. This is safer because it doesn't involve the use of chemical etc to start expulsion.

    Laxative work in two ways:
One way is preventing your large intestine from absorbing water, resulting in more lubrication in the large intestine, causing you to pass feces. This is bad because it dehydrates you.

Another way they work is by irritating your large intestine so much that it causes peristalsis, muscular contractions of the intestinal walls, which causes you to pass feces. This is bad because it works by irritating your large intestine.

Over time, regular usage of laxatives will stress your digestive system as well as your liver and kidneys, which could lead to more serious issues.

The enema I was referring to is a natural and soothing method of cleansing your system. A colonic tops this off by doing a deeper job.

I'm fasting for about 30 days and I feel awesome. What I'm doing is a bit more different then what is being talked about here. I'm just drinking alot of water with some coffee just my regular morning cup. Along with diet soda. I also eat breads, and crackers and some soups like the women mention on here. But for me its for Christmas and it was also to help me clear my mind and get rid of anything that was bad in my body. If you really want to know more about fasting I just bought this great book at Boarders the other day its The Compelte Idiots guide to Fasting and it really does help you give you guidelines and even gives you workouts you can do while fasting.

I hope that was some kind of help to your question sweetie! Keep up the great work we all know how hard that can be!

    I'm still here (unfortunately, heh)!!

You don't necessarily need a juicer to do a juice fast...you can always buy the fruit you want to use and throw it into a blender mixed with water and ice...it'll be more pulpy (which isn't so bad...good fiber). If you don't want the pulp you can "juice" the juice yourself using a strainer. Its more time consuming...but it works well.

Enemas are not bad. At least the kind that LexXe is talking about. Enemas just help clean out the colon, gently. I don't know that I would do it every week, but a couple times a month wouldn't hurt (make sure you really read up on how to do them properly).

The Master Cleanse is a great thing. After I have this baby and am done breastfeeding, I'll be doing it again (its not good to do certain fasts while breastfeeding). But, as for fasts...doing a water fast is fine...however, while water is extremely healthy for you, it does not contain vitamins/minerals/nutrition. You may find that it does not satisfy your hunger. Adding raw foods (fruits/veggies) to your cleanse in moderation would greatly help with the hunger department.

Usually the downfall of any kind of "eating habit" is the processed foods we eat. Pull those out and you're good to go. The biggest benefit of doing a cleanse is detoxing all that crap out (which helps reduce cravings) and re-starting your daily eating with the foods that resemble the foods you used during your cleanse (raw foods).

You can use bottled juice...but the only down side to using the bottled juice is that once you juice something, it loses its vitamin/mineral properties. So, the juice you are drinking doesn't have as much nutritional value as juice that you make at home (which is why the juicer is such a good investment because you can get all of the vitamin/minerals immediately). A lot of juices ADD supplements because of the juicing process (and also the pasturization/homogenation process for bottling).

If you can afford to purchase a small juicer...do so...it will pay for itself a billion times over...if not in dollar-wise, it will health-wise.

Gymgirl...you would probably have better results if you removed the caffeine (coffee) from your fast and dropped the pop. Diet pop is horrible for you (artificial sweetners cause health problems). Caffeine causes your body to flush water (not in a healthy way). Eating breads and crackers is fine in moderation, but if you are making it a staple, you are eating way too many carbs. I would strongly suggest you find a fast that incorporates more healthy food choices.

    Hope that helps...

Just make sure you don't fast too long or your body will start eating your muscles and your metabolism will slow down dramatically. Which will make losing weight through regular diet and excercise more difficult.

They actually aren't good to do all the time, but on a fast I believe you can do an enema a day.

This will only happen if she's not consuming calories (or protein). If you do a water fast, you will lose some muscle mass which is why it's not a good idea to do it more than a month at max. I would go with a juice fast, naked juice is SOOOO good and they have a ton of different types.

Don't water fast for more than four days, max.

Start taking a beefed up multivitamin, or prenatals, if you can get ahold of them, and go on a juice fast - if you don't wanna invest in a a juicer, then just buy the sugar free juices in the fridge section at walmart. You may also consider going on a chicken broth fast - I have done both juice and chicken broth, and a combo, with great success. It really sharpens your mental processes, and makes you think clearer, plus you get TONS of energy and you feel great, after about day seven.

^^^I don't know. I could never do straight water. But juice is easy because it's at least got something to fill you up.

It seems that whenever I do a fast, I'll lose 5-7 lbs real quick, then I plateau and don't lose anything else. I think my metabolism slows down too much. Does anyone know how to combat this?

^^^^^^^^Well, I've gone ten days on H20 before. So... Not one to be talking.

Once your body hits a certain point (some people say when you hit ketosis, for me, it seems like just before) everything gets sharper, you think clearer, and you feel great - no hunger, no nothing. The BAD part is, that you can't tell when too much is too much, sometimes. Around day five you start to run the risk of passing out without knowing it, but that's just my experience.

As far as how you do it, you just gotta be committed. The first three days are always hell. You gotta clear those toxins out of your system, plus withdrawals from caffiene and packaged foods and processed stuff. Remember that after it's over, it's all gravy. Just kinda... psyche yourself up. Be all like, "You can do this. It's only 72 more hours. You can handle this."

I also find it helps me to wear a certain bracelet/get my hand henna-d so that when I start craving I can look at it and focus on my goals.

*Edit* Was replying to Sexkitten. Guess I was too slow!

See, and that is what I'm scared of. I want to start back working out. But at the same time, I dont want to risk passing out

CK, the best thing I can suggest is to do a water/broth or water/juice combo.

If you go for broth, I reccommend chicken or pure veggie such as tomato.

Juice, any kind you like, just make sure it is 100% juice.

Mixing it in turns it from three days of extreme hell to about five days of mild hell. So.... Up to you. It just takes longer for your body to hit ketosis.

On the other hand, you can go longer safer on a mixed diet. I never passed out before about day 25, and usually I could feel it coming, if I was on water/juice or water/broth.

The important thing is to take precautions. Be aware of what your body is doing. Don't stand up suddenly. DO NOT get into a hot tub. If you are working out, hydrate like crazy. DO NOT swim. DO NOT sauna. Work out only in a climate controlled (air conditioned and indoor) area. You'll be fine if you just think about what you are doing.

The longest I ever fasted was juice/water and I went for 62 days.... and felt wonderful. Unfortunately, I (mistakenly) thought I was pregnant and had to go off.

Remember if you commit to this, then give it a week, and you will feel better than you ever have. It is great at work. You feel sharp, clear, in control, and HAPPY. It's great.

... don't do this for more than 2 days IMO, unless you're definitely getting at least 1000 calories from juices and broths and also taking a multivitamin supplement. Otherwise, this is just crash-dieting with a healthier label.
