    Default Tongue Piercing

I hope there's not a bunch of threads already on this, because I did do some searching first, but anyway....

I'm getting my tongue pierced next week and I'm nervous as hell. I've already got several piercings and 4 tattoos, so I'm not afraid of needles or anything, but the thought of having a needle go through your tongue just sounds incredibly painful.

Who here has a tongue ring? Is there anything you could compare the experience to?

I'm so excited, but nervous for next week!

My boyfriend used to have one. He said it feels like when you bite your tongue really hard. He said a tattoo hurts worse (he has three of those).

I want him to get his tongue pierced again! I wish he hadn't let it grow back together before we met. Fair warning though, he did chip a tooth on his, and that's pretty common. They also pose a choking hazard if the little ball comes loose, especially if it's while you're sleeping. And they get infected really easily due to all the bacteria in your mouth.

    Good luck!

I had my tongue Pierced year's back I took it out though.

Anyway It didn't hurt at all, honestly ... maybe I was one of the lucky one's though. I was also nervous as hell but I have to say eye brow threading hurts more.

I have one, and I've done it twice. I didn't really hurt. The worst parts were:

    1. Them pulling your tongue as far out of your mouth as possible with "bbq" like tongs, and holding it there while they pierced it. Then, having them add insult to injury by putting the jewelry in.

    2. The sound of the freakin' needle going through your thick, dense flesh echoing in your brain.

    3. Talking like a drooling idiot for the next few days, and not being able to eat/drink what you want.

I had mine peirced years ago, I left if for 2 years and took it out.
the worse part is not getting peirced, when the needle goes through your tongue it's like you re bitting your tongue really hard.
the worse part is after. Mine was swollen for a good week, and it was really hard to eat. Make sure you eat alot before you go get it peirced haha cause i didnt eat for like a week. Well, I ate, but mostly liquids.
it was fun to have, enjoy!

I truly don't remember mine hurting at all when it was pierced. If you're nervous about it, just dab a bit of anbesol on the top and bottom right before you go in. If I'm not mistaken, that's what my piercer did.

But yeah, I agree with everyone about the lack of speech coherance for a few days afterwards. Popsicles and anti-inflammatories will be your best friend for a week afterwards.

Aaaaaaack! I hadn't even thought about the sound of the actual piercing. Now I know that's what's gonna be running through my head when I go get pierced.

I don't remember mine hurting when I got it done either. And mine is far enough back that it isn't even near my teeth (so I'm not too worried about chipping them) and I didn't get the lisp like some people do. Also I guess I got very lucky in that mine was barely swollen at all, I even ate real food that same evening (fried chicken lol) and talked just fine. My mom didn't even notice it for months until one day I yawned and forgot to cover my mouth or something.
So I say if you want one, just get it and take care to follow the directions on the aftercare. They can get infected easily, but usually tend to heal pretty quickly. Good luck.

When I got my tongue pierced, it didn't hurt at all. I think b/c of it being a moist environment, it just helps the needle glide on through. Make sure you're going somewhere VERY reputable.

I went to a hugely famous place here in chicago thinking it was THE place to go, and I had a serious infection after two days. (And I followed their instructions with the listerine they gave me, etc). My tongue turned pale green, like a seagreen color. And it was pussing something fierce. After one day of that (so three days total), I took that shit out. My tongue turned back to normal after another few days, but for about a year, there was a lump in my tonugue where the hole had been. Gross.

For whatever reason, my body completely rejected it, but I didn't have that problem with any prior piercings.

Another thing to look out for, and maybe talk to a dentist about, is the effect it has on the lower part of your mouth. I don't know what it's called, but tongue piercings have been known to erode away the skin on the bottom of your mouth, making it easier to get cavities in your front teeth and possibly losing your teeth fron it, years down the road.

My bf needs a tooth pulled and an implant put in. His dentist says it's because of the tongue piercing knocking into it all the time and fucking with the nerve, eventually killing the tooth.

Hooray, this makes it sound like such a great idea .

Oh well. I've read a bunch about possible complications and care. Who knows, maybe I'll keep it for only a couple years and hope it doesn't cause too much damage.

From what I've read, isn't wearing a smaller barbell the main key in helping prevent damage?

When they pierce it they will put in a longer barbell because your tongue will swell up. After 4-6 weeks you should be able to go back and have the huge barbell switched out for a regular sized one. Usually they will do it for free or minimal cost (I was scared to do it myslef but lots of people do). It feels so much better after you do this.

I have heard that if you wear a barbell with acryllic balls it is better for your tooth enamel because its not as hard a metal.

One more tip I have is to brush the balls (especially the bottom one) with your tooth brush as soon as it doesn't hurt too much. You actually accumulate plaque (same as on your teeth) on the balls and it builds up and is gross. Also use alcohol free mouthwash (ie Not Listerine!!).

Anyway that is just my experience but any reputable piercer will give you the full aftercare details and answer all of your questions.

I had my tounge pierced. It did not hurt that bad, and it was very quick. The swelling is the worse part, because yoru tounge is soo sore for a few days. It's a sore muscle and thats what it feel like. Very sore and tired. Hard to eat with a big fat swollen tounge.

Make sure you rinse your mouth out often after you get it done. You don't want an infected tounge. I used the nonalcohol mouthwash, I forget what its called exactly, but its in a white bottle, and I also used this stuff I think its called glycol, or somehting close to that, you put a few drops on your tounge once or twice a day to get it really clean until its healed.

Also, the tounge heals fast, so you can't take the peircing out for long periods of time, or it will close up. That is why my tounge is no longer peirced. It fell out, and before i coudl get to the mall the next day, I couldnt get the ring back in. The hole had already gotten to small.

    Thanks for all the input!

I can't wait to get it done! (Just have to wait until after Wednesday, when I've got a French speaking final.)

Good luck with the piercing and also on the French final. You know, the way I see it, there's risk involved with everything in life. It shouldn't deter people from doing anything, as long as they know how to try and minimize risks and/or simply become educated on knowing when to spot problems. I hope you don't think I was trying to talk you out of it or anything.

I've had lots of things pierced. My tongue twice.

I did it when I was 14. I was really psyched about it and I think that's why I didn't feel anything. It was har cause I was hiding it from my mom who I lived with. I did it on a sat I knew she was going to a wedding on. I got home around 3 right after she left, and I made sure to be 'asleep' when she got home. My tongue was still swollen next day, but I managed to get a few sentences out and left the house for a few hours. My monday the swelling was pretty much gone and I was VERY CAUTIOUSLY eating (soft) solid food in front of my mom by tues.

She found out about a month afterwards. Two weeks after that she left on a vacation leaving my older cousin in charge. I went the day after she left to repierce it. I don't know if my body had 'recovery memory' or something as it was only a month and a half later, but the selling was completely gone the next night. (And no, it was not through the same intitial piercing, I have two holes where the puckered spots are visible on the bottom of my tongue).

I was supe careful about keeping my mouth clean. I also used that gly oxide stuff.

Fast foward ten years later- I don't always wear it. I can't at day job. I will generally put it in for a weekend every 4-6 weeks to keep it open. It's a bit uncomfortable for the first day, but then it's fine. Good luck!

I have had mine for 4 years.. I also have my nose ears and bellybutton and the tongue was the least painful piercing I ever had.. It is just 2 seconds of pain really when the needle goes through.. The swelling is a bitch though.. it lasts 2 days ...

WTF?? Was I the only one who was sucking ice cubes for 2 weeks after I got my tongue pierced? It didn't hurt getting it done...but fuck did it hurt after the feeling came back. Hello tylenol (did I take Tylenol or Aleve??? Don't remember) and ice cubes. No, I couldn't talk right without my tongue swelling up majorly for the first week. After that, it wasn't so bad.

After ALL of that, I loved my tongue ring. But, after 2 years, my body started rejecting it...so out it came.

I love kissing someone w/ one, and other things (blushes!) but I could never do it. Freaks me out major. I still wonder how I got the nerve to do my navel! But I was really young, (14) and rebellious!

like a lot of the other girls, the actual piercing was pretty painless. the muscle in the tongue is striated, so the needle slips through easily without causing too much trauma.

i started icing it right away and had very little swelling. i also rinsed w biotene a Lot.

the only problem i had was that the long bar they put in initially rubbed a blister on the roof of my mouth. once i was able to put the shorter bar in eveything was fine.

also, using acrylic balls will significantly reduce the amount of damage to your teeth.

    enjoy the new piercing...they're fun
