    Default Doctor Who last night?

Ok so I'm probably the only one here that watches Doctor Who, but for those that do, WTF was the writer on last night? I've seen better on You Tube. Is it me or did the show jump the shark. Maybe its modern stuff I just don't get?

I think the episode was titled Love and Monsters. Something about an absorbing monster. I mean it was funny in an off beat kind of way... but nah not what I was looking for. I'm beginning to lose interest... gah. After the episode The Satan Pit, I was losing interest, but it is going bad? Guess I'll have to go back to Tom Baker DVDs.

Last night's was unusual. Reminded me of the usual fare from Brits all exploring each other's quirkiness.

I think the premise was good, but I think it was badly implemented.

    The Satan Pit ROCKED.

Well I kind of watched the Satan Pit with low volume, so I'm sure I missed something. The first half was good The Impossible Planet. I'm just use to the Doctor questioning entitys like that more.

I know in the first season, they did one with a parody of big brother etc, and it came out quite well. Guess they just did not follow through this time. I did sorta like the beginning when it seem like some sort of big joke that he was one of these little people not involved in the story and kept having 'run ins' with the doctor et al. Just a little too like bad You Tube I guess.

Yea, sometimes it is fun seeing things from "outside" eyes of the main characters.

One of my favorite Star Trek episodes is called "Below Decks" I believe - or something like that. Hardly had any of the senior staff in it - they were all trying to figure out what was happening while usually the viewer is clued in cuz one is right there with the senior staff.

The X-Files also did a good one where they were questioning people and they all gave wild stories about the same event (which were re-enacted giving more screen time to the bit characters than Mulder and Sculley.)

Doctor Who jumps lots of sharks. I still watch it. I just enjoy the cheesy, low budget, eccentric qualities of British scifi and comedy. Sadly, the serious stuff of British TV has the same qualities.

Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

I haven't gotten into Doctor Who since the old Tom Baker days, but I can sure appreciate people who like it. I just haven't gotten into the new ones. There's a charm they will likely never get again. Although, I think if they'd pick up Eddie Izzard, they'd have a shot.

Tom Baker certainly was one of my favorites... but I have to admit Chris Eccleston is my new favorite Dr. I was very very disappointed when he bailed out of the series.

^^I enjoyed Chris Eccleston, I found something slightly reminissant of Tom Baker in his performance.

At least there are tons of Tom Baker DVDs out there.

I honestly can't bring myself to watch the newest series with any commitment. Nine is my Doctor. This last regen never happened.

Anyone seen/heard the dead ringers where Doctor Who (Tom Baker voices) calls himself? Very funny!! Also there was a comedy sketch where the Doctor uses speed dating to try and find a new assistant.

British TV (yep I'm a Brit) has dumbed down over the years. We seem to have lost the ability to make challenging programs. Oh, there are some shining exceptions to the rule, but most is populist dross these days.

I think one of the biggest changes came when TV companies found they could make money from phone in vote programs. Thus, we have "Big Brother" in about 5 incarnations, several "Find the Pop Star" varients, umpteen celebrity reality shows (including ball room dancing), not to mention endless 'competitions' that you can text a vote in for.

    * Which continent is New York in? a) Africa, b) Asia, c) North America.

It's TV for the hard of thinking, but it's also very profitable. Why make a challenging program when you can make more profit with undemanding crap.

Oh yeah, and we've also got the best 100 of.... programs.

Take 100 clips from comedy films, war films, sporting moments and whatever and add commentry from 'celebrities' that no-one have ever heard of explaining why the clips are so great, and you've got some very cheap television that fills up several hours of programmng time.

Thank god for the local library - at least I can find something challenging there.

    Phil.

I found this on a wesite devoted to "Time Bandits" (probably my favorite movie of all time):

Equally biting is the commentary provided by the ever present TV game show “Your Money or Your Life.” Kevin’s father watches the show constantly. Going from preposterous to horrifying as contestants willingly allow themselves or their loved ones to be tortured and humiliated in the name of “winning money,” the TV show within the movie points out both the shallow nature of much of what we deem entertainment and the distorted values held by those who covet money over health, happiness and safety.
A great cheesy, low budget bit of British scifi/comedy, containing occasional shots of a horrid game show called "Your Money or Your Life", which has come (in my mind) to represent the paradyme of British TV (I could be wrong, but it still amuses me).
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg!
