    Default Perms...anyone know?

Is there a new perming technique out now that doesn't ruin your hair? If so, does anyone know what it is called?
I love my hair curly but hate how the perm turns it into straw and it needs to be cut off after a couple of years. I have long hair and want to keep it long.. and pretty and curly!

There's a temporary perm called an iso perm (i think). The manager at my club got one and she said that it's not supposed to damage your hair at all, and it will wash out in I think 20-25 days. She said it only cost her $40.
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.

Skip it and get a curling iron...every girl I know who has ever heard of a "new technique" that "won't damage hair" has ended up with a bobbed haircut and a case of permanent wave remorse.

ISO Nexture... it's a semi-permanent wave. They make two. Both will fade in 20 shampoo's but one is especially for fragile or highlighted hair.

I've experimented on it myself and it works. However, your ends will get crunchy and need a trim a little sooner than expected, and like a regular perm, it'll lighten your hair if you color it.

Although they make one specificly for highlighted hair, I recommend you don't do it if your hair is heavily highlighted. It makes porous hair feel like shit.

Overall, it's a great product for people who have realativly healthy hair with minimal chemical processing, and who are afaid of commitment.

ISO is a good product. However if your hair is in any way damaged from anything I do not recommend it. Or if it is thin - dont use it.

I know its different but I used the same brand different product to straighten my hair. It fell out in various spots. So I think the best option is the temporary one Mia mentioned.

This might be sidetracking a little, but does anyone have a straight perm? Are you happy with it? Did it fry your hair?

Thanks for the responses! I used to perm my hair and loved it soooo much, but after a few years I cut it all off. It's grown out now and I want the pretty curls again, I will probably try the iso nexture!! I have a 14 month old and another on the way, curling my hair is something I don't really have time for even if it's the safest option.

This is random, but it's so intriguing to me that the perms white women use on their hair causes it to curl, while the ones african american women tend to use straightens the texture. So the burning question is, will the above perms curl coarse textured hair? Sorry, random thought?

IMHO, the ISO Nexture probaly won't. However, a traditional alkaline perm will.

Here's another thing to marinate on, Layka: there are some people who have extremely curly hair who straighten, then recurl the hair to get a looser wave pattern... AKA the Jerri Curl

Just another question sorry.. am I supposed to use this iso nexture myself at home? Is it something salons carry? I've noticed that you can just buy the products online but am not sure if that means it's a DIY product. Doing it myself is kind of scary. I do my own colour, red, but it always looks great and is really easy. If a salon doesn't carry it is it taboo to bring it in and ask them to?

Mia m thanks for the tip. I will definately steer clear of experimenting if my hair may come out jheri curl like. LMAO, not a good look. But I will try an alkaline perm.

It is a professional product that should be done in a salon. It's a really simple product to use, one step, no neutralizer required. However, it's really hard to properly wrap your own head in perm rods. If you're not careful and neglect to use "toothpicks" between the bands and the rods, you'll get those ugly perm kinks at the scalp.

If you can get in online, and you or a friend is really good at wrapping a perm, I say go for it. Otherwise, check out to find a salon near you who offers the product and is expierienced with the technique.

The chemicals that african americans use are not really called perms it is just a nick name they are really called relaxers. And no perms will not curl coarse hair they are not meant for african americans. My mom is a hair stylist that's how I know those answers.

Layka, I should've been more clear when I responded to your question. I didn't realize until after I read sillecc's post that you may be asking about coarse and extremely curly hair.

If you have coarse textured hair, an alkaline perm should do the trick. If you have extremely curly or African American hair, regardless of texture, a soft curl perm (Jehri Curl) is your only option. However, if you have ever had a hydroxide relaxer service performed on any of your existing hair, DO NOT get any perm. It will result in massive, unavoidable breakage.

sillecc, you half right. The same chemical used in permanent waves is the same used in some relaxers and all soft curl perms (thio-ammonium glycolate, if I remember correctly). The only difference with the latter is that the hair is processed twice with the same chemical: once to smooth the existing curl pattern, the second to reform the hair into a desired curl pattern.

You can take African American hair, wrap it around perm rods, process it with perming solution, and get a curl. Because you didn't first relax the hair, your curl will be big and frizzy instead of big and smooth.
