Default Immediate relief for a bashed back?

I walked down my apartment steps the other day and Charlie Brown'd it, feet in the air, landing back first (ice I did not see, and not yet salted).

Ouch. So my back has been very sore since, and it was so bad yesterday I didn't think I could dance...but if I keep calling in to work, they are totally going to can my unreliable behind. I know it seems like a reasonable excuse, but I've already tested their good graces on my inexplicable stomach illnesses (too embarrassing to be all "I have IBS...I *cannot* dance when I'm sick like this"). I've already been warned about my flakiness is what I'm saying. Plus I have no classes until January so now would be a good time to go to work!

So what can I do to numb the pain, like today? It's not serious I don't think. I can walk, so the spine is alright. Robaxtocet or whatever? Extra Strength Advil? Yoga? Hot pads or ice packs? I never know what the best options are...whether I should try to stretch it out, or just leave it alone. I can do very boring stage dancing- I don't do much anyway. I just need to be able to get through something resembling a lap dance without squealing in pain.

Are you sure you haven't hurt yourself badly? Maybe you cracked a vertebrae or something?

Once you get checked out and deemed ok...I would suggest heat packs, gentle massage, and muscle relaxants right before you work. You might have pulled a back muscle and this would help dull the pain. I'm not sure what is the source of the pain, but if its because you pulled a muscle, this would help.

If you fractured something, that's something more serious and you should get the figured out right away before it gets worse.

I posted a thread about my back a few weeks ago and got some good advice - I did a search and couldn't find it and now I can't do another, but you could find it under the threads that I've started.

Good luck, I know exactly how you feel, I've been having reoccuring low back bullshit but I still need to work.

True. Sounds like you are bruised badly. Perhaps some damage that needs to be looked at (MRI)

Don't play around with your back. Try an OTC anti-inflam. med. Ask the pharmacy what med. may help rid the pain and swelling if any you may have.

But i would see a doctor just to get an MRI at least.

    Good luck.

Back pain is really hard to treat with pills. I'd suggest alcohol, but I know you don't drink...

...next best thing is probably super-doses of ibuprofen. You CAN safely take way more than they recommend on the bottle...just not for extended periods of time. My doc told me max 12 200mg pills a day for super-dosing (4 at a time). You need to take it an hour or more before work.

I'd see a medical professional, spines are not something you want to take chances with

I agree with the posters - you may want to see a dr. quickly. You want to make sure you won't cause permanent damage by working when you've injured yourself.

In the mean time, when I strained my back at my other job (picking up people), I did this thing where I laid on the floor and put my feet on the couch or on a chair so that my legs were bent up at a 90 degree angle from my back, and then my knees were bent at a 90 degree angle over the seat of the couch. It really helped relax the muscles.

You should at a minimum get some x-rays of your back. Sounds like a pretty big impact.

Thanks guys...the extra loading tylenol has helped. I really don't think it's serious enough for xrays. It's more sore than anything, but not scary sore, can't move in certain ways, kind of thing. I'm pretty sure it's just badly bruised. If it doesn't get better in a week I will see my doc.
