    Default Opening someone else's mail

Isn't it a federal offense? Or to even sign for a package with (NOT YOUR NAME) but the name of the person a package is supposed to go to? Yeah well that's what happened to me.

I switched apartments 3 months ago (same complex) and my dumb ass accidentally put my old apt. # on the shipping address, but the new guy in my old apartment signed MY NAME and took my package! Yeah I know it's my fault for putting the wrong number but what he did was wrong. He should have turned it into the front office if it didn't have his name on it.

So if I find he did open my mail, how can I turn him in?

Report it to the Post Office.

To do anything unorthodox with the US Mail is to commit a federal crime. If he did it by accident, then big deal. But, did this individual do it with malice? If so, then report it.

^ Why would you sign for a package using someone else's name?

Just curious...what kind of package was it??

^It was a few pairs of socks (nylons, etc.) worth $20.

I would NEVER sign someone else's name for a package that wasn't even addressed to me, unless I was dishonest asshole.

Well, to be fair...he may not have looked at who the package was addressed to...signed for it, put it aside...realized it wasn't his...put it aside with the intention of bringing it over to you or taking it to the office...got busy...forgot.

But, you should definitely bring it to the attention of the post office.

Can you confirm that your neighbor has your package? Solving the problem may be as simple as going over and asking him. Since the package had to be signed for, I would assume some sort of tracking service number was attached to it? Legally speaking, if the package was delivered to where the address on it said it was to be delivered, you may not have a beef here, but I'd take it up with the P.O. anyways.

Also if you haven't done so already, go to your local post office or to https://moversguide.usps.com/?referral=USPS and make out a change of address. This way any important mail with your old address will be automatically forwarded to you.

I would think that the best thing to do would be a polite door knock, with some 'heavies'. Get the package and then politely interrogate as to why he would sign with a girls name.

I'm sure you could get him on some type of fraud for signing a false name.

Um... that doesn't sound like any kind of accident to me. He was probably hoping it was something valuable. Did you go over there and get it back? Threaten to report him if he gives you any problems (and then do it anyways, heh).

Ok...I was right the first time...I thought maybe I misunderstood what happened...but if he signed your name, that's called FRAUD.

Go knock on his door and then report him to the PO and the Police.

I did go knock on the fuckers door, and he acted hella shady and defensive saying he knew nothing of the package. What a loser. All this over a few pairs of socks worth $20 which is of absolutely no value to him. He was really, really shady.

Ok...what he did is called mail fraud and forgery. You may want to let him know that you will file a police report against him...and notify the Post Master. If he signed YOUR name for that package...then he's in deep shit. You can prove you didn't sign for the package because it was delivered to your old apt. number...and if you pull out your legal docs...it will show that your signatures don't match.

Go file some reports. If he did it this one time...he's probably done it before. You don't do stuff like that "on accident" or one time.

Man that sucks. I would knocked him out soon as the door opened and took of his shoes. Bet he's wearing em now. Freak.

Anyways... last time I did change of address online, they wanted money?? Dont understand that, since its free at the PO to just drop the form in the box. Anyway..
    Def. report him.

Was the package shipped thru the US Postal Service or another service such as FedEx or UPS? I think the felony offense from opening someone else's mail only applies to US Postal Service pieces...but VG is right, you could get him for fraud for signing your name. Report that shady mofo to the police!
