    Default Australian car loan Q's.

My partner has decided, finally, to get me a car (after I pointed out it lost me $600 in work and cost me $500 in cabs for ONE WEEKEND! A $4,400 a month car is a NICE car!).

Anyway. He doesn't have a license but is the only one able to buy the car. I have a license but am unable to get the car. However, my income is considerably higher than is and I can probably get a better deal (plus I finally have proof of income)....

    Can a non-resident co-sign a resident's loan for a better rate?

Can he purchase a car without getting a license?

I figure we'll just find someone who doesn't mind payments for their used $5000 automatic car they keep dusty in their garage.

Can you get a loan for buying a car off someone (with, preferably, extra money so I can immigrate?) and then pay back the bank? Would it be better to offer direct deposits into the original car owner's account on a monthly/weekly basis?

Last time I bought a car was with my husband and I got a 2003 Ford Taurus SES from a dealership under his and his mum's name...

...so I have NO idea how to do it myself. :/

Why can't you just buy it? My ex and I were both American citizens on a temporary visa, and we bought two cars in Australia, both from dealerships. (The first one was a lemon, but I loved the second one!)

Not enough cash-on-hand to do so... and it's costing me thousands a month not having one... I could be putting that money toward the car instead of wasting it on cabs and hiring drivers.

Edit: I figure if I get the car... I can put how much it WOULD'VE cost me for a cab/train/driver to a place in a box or jar and make the payments that way... I'd be paid off in six weeks. o.o

I bought a car for $1400... granted it cost me another grand to service it to the point that nothing much is wrong with it. Can you drive manual? If so, then look at manual cars especially Toyota Corollas.

They are hardly little buggars. Run good as well. Mine doesn't put me out too much. Car loans are a waste of time/money ... instead just buy one for $2000 or under and go from there.

Even try the backpackers/hostels as they are always selling decent reliable cars for cheap (esp. when some of them are in a rush to get rid of the car due to leaving the country).

I found mine off ebay. There is also www.drive.com.au

You can rent a decent car for about $200-$250 a week if you have it long term. Which i think is about a month, and the best bit is when it breaks down just get another one.

Leasing a car is not totally viable unless you are operating under a company structure imo. It is best to own a car than to lease in the end even if the car costs under $5000 .... it is still your car and not someone else's car (in the case if you leased it) plus there are always so many T&C with leasing... why bother with the hassle.

I'm not old enough to rent a car.

How can you not be old enough, you only have to be 18?

^^^ Actually, you have to be 25 with most companies.

Mostly: Because it costs me $500 per week in cabs while I save up for the car. It'll take me, what, a month to save up? That's TWO GRAND I could've had for the car that I wasted on transport until then.

Also that and I -did- do that. The car broke down the SAME day and now needs to be junked! I was stuck and assaulted/robbed in a foreign city because of it.

... either way, I'm working on it.

I got a driver for a bit less ($10 ph) so I should be able so save quicker.

Car broke down at a show... guys crowded.. had to leave because one guy sexually assaulted me, but I couldn't get away... they said they'd use my phone to call a repairman... RAN OFF WITH THE PHONE... stole our money... stole my dress, cleaned vomit with it and then handed it back to me... I ended up going home with the nicest guy I could find (out of forty) and using his internet to get my work's number and getting a car to pick me up.. for $110 I didn't have...

I was reimbursed... turned out Mr. Attacker is a Catholic School Teacher and REALLY didn't mean it... so my phone was replaced and my money... but I had to go back and get my car... which I then found out was sold to me illegally, so the guy took the plates and I can't even drive it to junk because it also needs 2k in repairs before it's drivable to get plates.

    Yay.

OMG, Morri. I'm so sorry. I'm glad you're okay though... that could've turned out even worse.

The car wasn't in your possession for more than 30 days, was it? So you're not responsible for the repairs? I'm on the AIM if you want to chat; remember, I was sold a lemon in Oz too so I might be able to help. Anyway I'm free to just listen if you want.

I had it for 12 hours... he illegally sold it to me with rego but without that one documentation (road-worthy?).... and so he came back and took the plates so that it was sold legally instead... and I was told I'm responsible.

Luckily, I can scrap it for more than I bought it for... lol.

Yes ^^ he needed to have the RWC on display even if it DID have rego. Lesson learnt for Morr and hopefully others that to never purchase a car without the Road Worthy Certificate at the very least being displayed (the original, not a photocopy)!!

Anyway, I do wish you luck with saving up the dollars to purchase a new car. I also need to now put mine in for a service soon... I wish I knew as much as you do about car maintenance so then I could save a shitload with my actual car! lol.

If I knew anything about manuals, I'd offer to help you repair your car... I hear they're easier to repair, but last thing I need to do it something for an automatic and car go poof.

Either way... I was going to put my down payment on a car this week but some of my jobs moved to next week! Now I need money for my medical ($190 because of lack o discount that's being reimbursed next month!!... so NEXT month it'll be $50.. grrr)... my wedding dress payment ($200 p. week).....

If those jobs hadn't have cancelled... I'm feeling very sad right now... not to mention I'm kinda done with this whole internet thing.. and work...

Plus I need to go to the hospital badly and I still haven't gone.. but I need the money so bad.

I think I cancel my private hospital coverage though (bring it back down to $20 a month!) and just keep the extras for my physio and glasses... cause public isn't THAT bad.
