Thumbs down So sick of cleaning up cat yak!

My cat Buddy throws up all the damn time! I'd say he pukes at least three or four times a week. Sometimes it's on our nice white couch; the other day it was on the bed, and just now it was all over the kitchen floor. We have tried every kind of food and everything, and he just keeps throwing up!

Usually it looks like a long turd (hairball, I'm guessing) surrounded by brown liquid.

We find he throws up the least when we feed him canned Whiskas mixed with water twice a day, plus we leave dry Purina Hairball Formula for Indoor Cats sitting out for him all the time. He has plenty of water. He has two fangs and no other teeth (he's 13-17 years old, not sure exactly how old but somewhere in that range). Other than the constant yakking, he's in excellent health. He doesn't seem sick, and usually after he throws up, he wants to eat.

Any ideas on how to make him stop throwing up? We can't afford to take him to the vet and he seems perfectly healthy otherwise. I know cats have sensitive stomachs, but damn!! I'm getting really sick of cleaning up his yak all the time!!

My cats used to puke all the time cuz they ate too fast (they thought if they didn't eat the whole bowl of food at once they were gonna starve or something ) Anywho, when does he tend to puke? If it's right after he eats, maybe try giving him smaller portions. Otherwise try and see if something specific is making him puke. If it's all hairballs, maybe consider getting him shaved into a lion so he doesn't eat that much fur. (It's super cute, and funny lol). Good luck

certainly sounds like hairballs. my long-haired girl chucks a hairy yak probably once a week. it is hot season now tho' so she's shedding like a mofo and eating half of the proceeds...

sounds like a lot of times a week for you tho', is he a long haired cat?

Has a vet prescribed anything heavy duty for hairballs?

It's not after he eats. He eats fairly slowly and steadily throughout the day. Just now he puked just before his dinnertime; sometimes he throws up very early in the morning or late at night or midday. It has nothing to do with his eating schedule.

And he sheds a LOT, but I don't think they'll shave him because he's already a shorthair. He's a really big cat and very old but he's just your typical shorthair grey-and-black tabby cat. I've only seen lion cuts done on Persians and other longhair breeds.

The other day he started to throw up on my boyfriend's bare chest! We were lying in bed sleeping, with the cat curled up on his chest, and suddenly we woke up to hearing the cat making that awful heaving noise. The bf immediately launched Buddy off the bed, but he wound up not puking that time. That's another thing, he heaves a lot without actually barfing.

Oh they'll still shave him My cats are shorthair, but I'm allergic, so every summer they get a pretty lion shave Not as cute as a long hair, but still cute with the little puff on the tail. Hrm, other than that or a vet visit, I have no idea. Good luck!

I started feeding my cat Purina Pro formula and he stopped puking. I used to give him Hartz hairball formula goo on his paw until I found out the Hartz people are evil animal killers. I suggest giving him some other hairball formula b/c sometimes the hairball food isnt enough. I havent tried these but they are still pretty cheap

If it doesnt stop with that. I read online that you can feed your cat chicken and rice until it feels better. Also, heres an thing on tuna for cats. It could be also why he feels the need to puke along with the hairballs.

I haven't heard of Wellness cat food. We tried Iams and he actually barfed MORE, so it was back to the Whiskas. He does get the Hairball Control dry food, but he needs some wet food because he can't chew the dry very well (two fangs, no other teeth). He wasn't puking when he was on a dry-food-only diet, but he had teeth back then.

It's most likely hairballs, but other than the Hairball Control dry food, I don't know what else to do about it.

Purina is not much better... but I digress.

Wellness is the BEST American cat-food company... absolutely fantastic. Followed by Royal Cannin... expensive, but my mum's cat has the same problem and NO MORE (until she started feeding it crap again).

Overall, a raw diet is best, but Wellness and Royal Cannin are great replacements.

Well, its what keeps him from barfing up food. So as long as the food does its job.

Wellness and it's competitor, Royal Cannin, are known for being the top-shelf cat foods and are only available in pet stores or non-super-market-y pet food places. Iams and various other grocery-store brands are, imo, terrible... there's a website somewhere that actually has the nutritional value of all those brands and it is SICKENING to see what they put in it. D:

I feed my cats raw now, though... but I doubt you could do it in America, as it's expensive there.

Hey, thanks for the links, TM! I'll try some of those supplements. I didn't know they made that kind of thing. And yes, we brush him every day. If we don't, he screams at us... he LOVES to be brushed.

Morri, can you get the Wellness food in a pureed or ground wet formula?

Awesome. I checked that link and found a supplier near me, so I'll head down there tomorrow. Hopefully it won't cost too much.

One thing my vet prescribed for our last cat who had this problem is called Laxatone. It's a petroleum based lubricant to guide the hairballs through the system so they come out the natural way in their bowels. This stuff is awesome.

What you do is rub the stuff (its like brown jelly paste) on the cat's front paw. The cat will limp around on 3 legs for a second, and then start licking the laxatone off its paw, ingesting it. It's the only thing that worked for us when nothing else worked (even stuff like Wellness)and we consulted the vet.

I had to give another cat Laxatone once when she was eating splinters off the bathroom door (yes, she'd peel them off and eat them!). She HATED the Laxatone and would rather track it all over the house crying than lick it. But then, she was a fussy eater and Buddy will eat absolutely anything, so maybe I'll have better luck with him.

If Laxatone doesn't work, you can use all-natural butter.

My cat did this, as well...how annoying...thank god I haven't had to clean it up for the last nine months. heehee

When you change a cat's food, its recommended that you do it in phases...mix the new food with the old and gradually phase out the old food until its all new food. It helps their stomachs get used to it.

But, for those hairballs, definitely use a laxative-type product. Also, does he like cat grass? You can get some of that and let him eat it...it'll help him purge stuff out of his stomach.
