    Default wisdom teeth extraction

So, at last I am getting my wisdom teeth removed Thursday morning. I had my consult today and he wants to remove all four, three are in completely. He is going to do the procedure in the office under a local anesthetic. My boyfriend is going to be taking care of me. I guess he'll finally get to see my good side. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.

Oh god!!! I made my appointment for feb 15th and I'm soooooo scared! I'm a dentist hater. I have to get three out (mine are in completely too!).

Sorry, no tips. Just a shared nervousness.

A co-worker took a week off from work recently for that. She really needed help for at least 3 days after because you need help chaging your gauze. So thats great you have someone helping you.

She really couldnt eat anything that was hot or cold just room temperature stuff. She could barely open her mouth to change her gauze let alone eat anything she had to chew. I hope all goes well for you though. Dont plan on doing alot I guess.

I have a quick off topic question: Do you have any current pain due to the teeth being all the way in?

No kissing, sucking on anything...for at LEAST 3-4 days. To avoid bruising, have a cold pack and a hot pack ready for every 15-30 minutes (cold pack the first 3 days and then hot pack). Take your meds faithfully...switch off between the prescribed meds and tylenol (I believe its tylenol) to give you more time with the more powerful meds.

Oh, and since you're going to be awake...take headphones and some good music. The sound of them taking your teeth out are probably not something you want to hear.

    Good luck!!

My boyfriend got all four of his removed a couple years ago and he got conked out! When I get mine out, that's definitely the way I wanna go.

Good luck with everything! You'll probably be sick of soup and lukewarm juice after a while.

I would ask for light, IV sedation, that's the way to go, you won't remember it and you'll feel good! Make sure to ice your cheeks, don't eat anything hard to eat and DO NOT SMOKE or SUCK WITH A STRAW!!!!! That can cause a dry socket which basically pulls out the blood clot pretty much opening up the hole where the tooth was and not having anything covering the jaw bone. I worked for an oral surgeon when I was in dental hygiene school, I was an assistant and I saw patients that didn't follow the orders all the time and came in with a dry socket in the most miserable pain you can imagine. The oral surgeon would have to pack some gauzes with clove oil in it to soothe it for a couple days. The Dr. may also give you a plastic syringe and have you irrigate it with warm salt water or some medicine, if he tells you to, DO IT!!! I've seen patients that didn't do it and got LOTS of food packed down in there and caused a gum infection.

When I got mine out, they were impacted and my face swelled up, but since 3 of your's are already erupted, it should be a piece of cake, no matter what, follow the directions of the doctor. Other than that, you should be fine.

Okay, to offset the icky stories, here's mine:

It was fine. They took out all three of my teeth under light general (yes, I only grew three. I'm weird). I woke up and walked down the hall to recovery and it didn't hurt. It actually never hurt, just a little bit of soreness. I was sick of soups and shakes by the end of 3 days, but that was the worst of it.

It sucks for some people, but others handle it fine. Here's hoping you're in the latter category.

Yes, the left side of mouth hurts when I try to bite down on a sandwich because it's so crowded with both top and bottoms being completely in on that side.

i had mine out when i was 14, one broke the skin and the others were prime for the picking; my jaw is small so they wanted to get them all out at once. i only remember the basics..the first day or two you're gonna hurt like hell. you will only be able to eat softer foods (soups, apple sauce, jello, etc) and forget about drinking out of a straw for a little while. just go easy...it heals really quick.

I've only had two removed so far. I need to get the other two removed as soon as possible, but I don't have the time right now. I wrote a letter to soup. I was pretty drugged up. Vive le painkillers!

I had all 4 taken out a few years ago. It really wasn't a big deal for me. Went in, sat in the chair, was put to sleep, then woke up and left with my mom. They gave me Vicodin, which is good but made me puke a lot. I ended up using a ton of ibuprofen, which worked well. For a few days I could only eat soft things, but other than that I was fine. It was kinda like a mini-vacation; just lay around on the couch all day watching tv, eating popsicles, and having someone take care of you.
I had no swelling but a friend of mine looked like a chipmunk for a few days.

I've got half my wisdom teeth out. I was told to do it that way so that I'd still be able to chew on one side. I was awake the whole time, just got a couple shots of painkillers and it wasn't that bad at all. They sent me home with a prescription for pain meds, which I filled the second I got out of the dentists office. I was fearing some serious pain when the shots wore off.

Dreading the worst, I popped one pill the second I got home. Then took a nap when the pill made me drowsy. The next day I woke up and the thing was closed. It was smooth, like there had never been a hole there at all!! I never had to use the rest of the pills and the whole process was a peice of cake. Guess I was lucky on that account, maybe you'll be as well!

Sucky part is, my insurance ran out before I could get the other side done. So now, years later I have wisdom teeth on my left side and none on the right. Thats one expense I've been avoiding and really need to get on top of.
Anybody know how much this costs without insurance?

I went to a dental/oral surgery school. It cost me $750 to have all 4 wisdom teeth surgically extracted. If you don't have insurance, this is definitely the way to go (check to see if you have any schools around). I was operated on by an advanced student (only one who is going for oral surgery), his instructor (who is a practiced/licensed oral surgeon) and a nurse/anesthesiologist.

Although, I do have to say that I followed orders to the 'T' and I still got dry socket on my bottom right side. Sometimes it just happens no matter what you do...and yes, its painful. Extremely painful. But, they pack it for a few days with that nasty tasting stuff and a couple of days later, you're good to go. But, aside from the dry socket, the rest of the sockets were fine/not painful and I had no swelling what-so-ever (because of the cold/hot packs).

I didn't have to leave gauze in my mouth for longer than a few hours after surgery. But, its all dependant upon what your oral surgeon says.

If you are being put under, you'll be drowsy upon release, so make sure that they tell you exactly what you need to do BEFORE you go under...and then they'll repeat the instructions to the person who will be taking you home/taking care of you.

Don't be afraid to call them with questions, either.

And, remember, cold packs/heat packs will be your best friend.

Yay fpr Versed. If they dose you adequately, you won't remember a thing. I had all four removed at once and they had to break the roots off to get them out because the roots were all curled up in my jaw. I had no problems...pain pills kept me sleepy and feeling weird for the first 24 hours. After that, I preferred not having them...didn't like the weird feeling. Within two days, I was able to eat soft foods other than milkshakes and apricot babyfood. Good luck.

I've had two pulled so far - one on top, one on bottom. With the first one (top), I had milkshakes and soft food for about two days and I was fine. With the second, I had it pulled around 3 pm and then went to my mom's house for a big ol' chicken dinner with all the fixings. A couple Tylenol took care of the pain. No big deal whatsoever.

Oh, and I am a major wuss when it comes to pain. So if I say it didn't hurt, it REALLY didn't hurt.

Okay, Ouchiieeee, turns out the top two teeth had come in completely and the bottom two were only partially in and impacted. He removed all four and the two that were impacted hurt like hell. I am taking percocet and it's helping some. I wish I could have just left my mouth numb. The right bottom one which is the one that had barely started coming in and was impacted is still bleeding slightly and I have a gauze in there right now. I have been alternating with gauze and a dry tea bag to help with the bleeding as well.

i had all four done at once under IV sedation.

i felt like shit when i got home. however, i ate some gooey things, followed my instruction sheet to the letter and i rocked on just fine.

i looked like Alvin the chipmunk for maybe 3 days... only advice i have is to do everything the dental surgeon says.

I had all mine removed in the hospital under general anethesia. They were horribly impacted and had to be chiseled out of my jaw bone AFTER they had to dislocate my jaw to get proper access (I have an unusually narrow jawline). It was a month before I could really eat anything because of the severe swelling in the joint after they reseated it. Total mess lol.

Everyone else I know had them done in a dentist office with just local novacain type stuff and it went fine for them. I seriously wouldn't sweat it, it's almost always a simple thing (they'd let you know ahead of time if it was going to be rough).

Katherine, I had all of mine out at once. They were impacted and an oral surgeon took them out. It wasn't bad. I told him I didn't want to be awake and I blinked my eyes and it was over with. Then (on the advice of a friend) I started taking the pain meds as soon as I got home, not as soon as I felt pain. I basically slept the next two or three days with my mom checking on me every so often and bringing my pain pills and other meds. I don't really remember it hurting at all.

I go to an "alternative" dentist. He does things all natural, and said "only about 30% of people need any of their wisdom teeth removed"

I love him!!!! (I'm one of the 70, b/c there is space for them to fit. Growing in still hurts, but it's nothing compared to the horror stories.

Jeeze... I had all four of my wisdom teeth already break through. I don't want to get them pulled! I've had braces for two years (and they are coming off in January!) so I am afraid taking them out will interfere with the ortho treatment and cause my teeth to shift. They don't hurt at all and I'm a firm believer in the "au natural" thing. If it's not broke, don't fix it... Good luck to you guys who have to get your third molars out. I will be thinking of you!
