OMG is this true??? then the US gov't is losing out on something HUGE.... I've never really cared much about legalization, either pro or against, not much of an issue for me, but if these numbers are correct then we are losing a huge potential economic bonus by not regulating it. wow.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if it were true. MaryJane became illegal because of lobby groups way back in the day who used massive propoganda to brainwash folks against Marijuana. Sadly there is still a lasting effect of that propoganda today.

I personally think it will become legal but regulated in the USA in my lifetime.

Especially after the recent studies showing its effectiveness in preventing alzheimer's and reducing chronic pain... I hope medical marijuana is decriminalized at the very least.

And yes, it was originally banned during the 50's/60's as the country was experiencing immigration from nations whose people had a cultural history of using the plant.. like jamaicans... many believe it was another racially motivated/xenophobic decision, and that the brouhaha following it was what really caused mainstream experimentation.

Marijuana will never become legal. It is so easy to grow anyone could do it. The goverment wont be able to tax use if you can grow it. More people dont grow it now because if they were caught with it they could be fined or put in jail.

The only reason why Marijuana is a such a money maker is because it is illegal, it increases the demand. If it was made legal it would be even cheaper than corn because of the above mentioned reasons. People could grow in flower pots like herbs.

Um, people can homebrew booze (I make awesome mead). That doesn't hurt Jack Daniels. Fact is, growing pot is a lot of work and people are lazy. Not to mention you have to wait for plants to grow to maturity and people who smoke pot want it now. Also, a crop runs out so you'd have to grow it constantly. Who wants to dedicate their whole backyard to pot?

To the best of my knowledge, this is true. I just heard someone interviewed on the radio about two houra ago. He pointed out what he called the "War on Drugs Indrustrial Complex" is a $7-billion-dollar annual industry in and of itself!

If it were legal, wouldn't the value go way down, though?

    Have you guys seen Grass?

    # Plot Outline The history of the American government's war on marijuana in the 20th century.
    # Plot Synopsis: This film explores the history of the American government's official policy on marijuana in the 20th century. Rising with nativist xenophobia with Mexican immigration and their taste for smoking marijuana, we see the establishment of a wrong headed federal drug policy as a crime issue as oppposed to a public health approach. Fuelled by prejudice, hysterical propaganda and political opportunism undeterred by voices of reason on the subject, we follow the story of a costly and futile crusade against a substance with questionable ill effects that has damaged basic civil liberites.

It's really unfortunate that it's illegal. Not only do we waste all this money fighting a futile war on drugs, cannabis is a multi-talented plant that could be useful for a variety of applications.

Well I guess people do it but I would think growing in a closet would be a fire hazard... I mean aren't grow lights pretty hot? Don't they have to be on most of the day or something like that ? I'd be awful nervous to grow in a closed space like that

When I lived in Boston I had a friend who grew in this chamber thingy called a phototron. It was pretty neat but his apartment smelled quite strongly of MJ...it made me nervous to visit him. I had visions of sitting on his couch and the DEA busting in... silly I guess since he wasn't selling it. He was sooo cool- he used to give it away!!!!

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! I used to know a dude in, get this, BLAND Missouri that had his name legally changed to 'Chief Wannadoobie' (His real name was Joe Bickel). This guy was a lot like that. He was fucking crazy though. He had a seed planting party and ADVERTIZED IT IN THE LOCAL NEWSPAPER! He owned 8 acres of land and it looked like a pot plantation, plants everywhere. Got raided twice by the dea, first time they took 135 plants, second time they tool like 70 plants (don't ask me how 70 plants miss the radar). This guy wanted nothing more in life other than to be able to grow weed legally. Even, and i'm not kidding about this, sending letters to congress declaring that he and his 8 acres of land were SUCCEEDING FROM THE NATION (I bet that brought at least one hearty belly laugh from some file clerk on capitol hill). This guy had STACKS of those canned replied from the white house (you know, the ones where it's like "thanks for sending the letter... etc... etc... STACKS of them). But that motherfucker used to give me ounces at a time cuz i'd talk to him about the bible, and King Arthur, and Kierkegaard, and Deism, and Wicca, and norse myths, shit like that. I could carry on a conversation and that brought be bud. LOL. I remember that dude. It was in 1993 that i knew this guy, i know this because we had the flood in the midwest then.

Damn, i was like 20 then. I'm old. I so love the people i've met. My life is awesome.

This was the explanation I heard during a seminar at Yale about drugs and alcohol, from a pharmacologist who knew his history.

According to him, marijuana laws were made much more severe when it was apparent that large numbers of black people were using it. Then it became necessary to make possession a felony, of course...

This also happened with cocaine, which Freud publicized and made popular by trying it, liking it, and recommending it to all his professional associates. Later he changed his mind, but it was too late.

Cocaine was quite popular and widely accepted, ie Coca-Cola got its start by including it in its secret formula.

But much later, when it was realized that blacks were starting to use it in large numbers, it also was viewed as a much more abhorrent and criminal substance. Well, we can't have that, can we? better make it a fucking felony, too!

Now, of course, since so many white people started using marijuana in the 70's, it has been reduced to a misdemeanor--unless you have large amounts and are dealing it.

Cocaine, being a genuinely nasty drug, has retained more severe penalties.

Oh, I'm sure there are fans that automatically come on. You're right though, I would be concerned about the fire hazard. I made my comment because that's what people DO up here this time of year: grow in their closet or basement.

Back in the day (50's?) the doctor prescribed "100% pyur, grayd A, guvment grayd cocayne" to treat my ADHD uncle. Gram had to scrape it into his orange juice every morning.

All of this aside though, I really do wish they would legalize cannabis. It would be so much easier to conduct research.

You dont have to dedicate your whole backyard to it. If allowed to grow the same plant would continue to produce. With minimal drying it could be smoked. My grandma used to grow it in flower pots is how i know. It takes alot less work to process than mead. It is also alot cheaper to grow in general.
