    Default Auto-immune Disorder and Dancing

    Hey gals:

I've just been diagnosed with Grave's Disease (yay me!). I know one other dancer who has fibromyalgia. We've been talking about how we deal with problems like fatigue, soreness, jittery muscles, lightheadedness and so on while trying to dance and be sexy. We both have to carry snacks like protein bars with us and take frequent breaks. Neither one of us can drink alcohol or too much caffeine. We have to bring bottled water to get our proper intake. Just curious if any one else here has an auto-immune problem and how you cope with symptoms. Or has anyone quit dancing because of it?

I decided to keep dancing to offset my medical bills from my illness. LOL Life sure is funny.

I take a lot of breaks & have learned "lazier" ways to hustle. If I feel tired during dances I ask the customer if I could have a little break...I've never had a guy get upset at that....We chitchat for 5 minutes while I regroup.
I noticed customers get turned off if you bring up the word "medical" or "immune disorder" (I guess they imagine the worst) so I'm going to start saying my fitness plan doesn't allow alcohol. & "Gosh, why don't we just have a slow sexy dance instead of a drink....?"

There are a lot of auto-immune disorders: lupus, Graves, rheumatoid arthritis and I think multiple sclerosis. Basically the body's immune system turns on itself. In Graves the body attacks the thyroid gland.

Anyway, just wondered if there were more like me out there and if anyone has some good coping strategies.

I have Multiple Sclerosis and I find that dancing keeps my muscles toned and in shape without pushing too hard. I really have to watch out for being overheated or fatigued so when I feel like that I just take a break or take it easy. If I am having balance or dizziness issues I ask to be taken off of the stage rotation (my club is very good about that, no questions asked), I drink tons of water throughout my shift and if the customer likes me to drink with them (which I only do if my time is paid for) then the bartenders and I worked out a code name. The customers can't tell and I use acting skills to act a little "buzzed". I have definetly noticed that since I started dancing my health is waaaaayyyy better and my doctor's have noticed it as well. Less stress, no work schedule, and excercise! Yipee! As with any autoimmuned disorder, watch out for those silly little germs- no need to get sick and throw your immune system into overdrive!

My only real problem so far is that I get exhausted about half-way through a shift and I can't really work more than two days in a row without it taking a real toll.

Otherwise, it's funny because until I get my metabolizism leveled out my body temp is higher than normal. So many guys have commented on it: "You're so WARM" "You give off a lot of heat" and so on. I think it's getting me more dances!
