    Default Anyone take "message holidays"?

I probably get 150 business and personal emails per week, plus dozens of txt messages on my cell and a bunch of voicemails.

Over the years, I have become a champ about responding, so much so that friends and colleagues ask if something is wrong if I am off the grid for even a few hours. (Even when I'm nominally on vacation.)

But lately, I am weary of all this and long to take a message vacation.

Anybody do this? How can I do it elegantly?

can you get an auto message... like txt respond that you're taking a break for the holidays, and you'll be back on such and such.....

also, change you voicemail message, and do an auto reply for email....

you deserve it, so don't worry too much about what people are thinking

Yep! I do this more often than not now.
Elegant though? Hmm just away messages or a group email / sms to everyone wishing them well and saying you will most likely be out of contact for whatever amount of time.
Then just kick back and relax, ahhhhh.

my husband is in the same boat as you, an insane amout of phone/email messages.

he ropes me in to do his 'christmas message'. i have a history of doing voiceovers and what-not, so he gets me to do my 'sandra sully' (aussie newsreader) voice.

    i just say something like:

"thank you for calling X company. Mr Nautilus is on christmas leave until ______. If you require blah blah and widgets, please call ______. thank you for supporting X company in 2006, have a safe and la de da whatever holiday..."

they don't leave messages because it's fairly clear they shouldn't.

if you want your sanity, it has to be done...

nb. nautilus can do it for a nominal fee.

(then you get the bonus aussie accent to delight and intrigue your friends and colleagues).

The last time the wife and I went to Europe for 2 weeks, my cell message was as follows: "Howdy! You've reached MrChristopher's answering machine thingee. I am in Europe with my lovely wife, and will only be checking my voice and email sporadically. If you're my mother, one of my children, or if someone else important to me is bleeding from the head and/or on fire, leave a message. Otherwise, see you on XXX Date. Thanks!". Obviously that's not elegant. But you know what? I only had 4 messages in 2 weeks. I agree with the ladies above, just tell them politely yet firmly that you will be unavailable for the following dates etc. Leave your vacation contact # only with the people who absolutely need it. Otherwise, fuck 'em. You're on vacation.
