I really enjoyed Dancing at the Blue Iguana. That movies is (almost) spot on for most of the clubs I've worked at. You can also pick those character archtypes and plunk them down in a movie like "Clerks" or "Casablanca" (not saying that those movies used the same type of charaters, just saying that the archtpyes would slip right into either of those movies).

I think a lot of dancers and/or stripclub staff feel that the movie makes them look bad, but those charaters are very typical of most strip clubs. It took me a while before I started noticing the cast of charaters in EVERY club I've worked at, right down to lonely old guy and the benevolent manager.

Where the story really diverged from reality were the stage scenes of customers throwing gobs of cash. Okay, that did happen at one time, but not since 9/11.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

I love Dancing at the Blue Iguana. It let me know what I could possibly be in for considering I was a travelling dancer.
    I also liked Closer alot.
I haven't seen Player's Club since it came out, so I believe I'll run to the viddy store and rent it this week.

I thought this movie was great as well. And, yes, I do know girls and guys like these characters at every club I've worked at.

The bad thing is that they failed to show the other strippers...the ones who do have their stuff together.

But that wouldn't have made good drama, I guess.

What this movie taught us was "Strippers are depressed drug fueled whores with bad/broken messed up lives"

I'll break it down for you....

Jessie: Underage alcoholic stripper who gets the crap beaten out of her by her boyfriend/s & gives dirty old fat men head for $100

Angel: Drug fuled pot smoking dumbass! (brain obviously "fried")

Jasmine: The only half normal one but pansy ass boyfriend dumps her after seeing her strip on stage.

Jo: Drug dealing junky Psycho bitch (with SERIOUS mental issues) that *beep* dirty old for cash on the side.

Nico: Heroin addic, manic depressed, sad case porn star.

Stormy: Insest whore Loves her brother (in more ways than one) & also gives old fat men head for $100

    Hollywood LOVES strippers

So did I. I know with all the little stories of dancers in it, it left out the one about the dancer who DIDN'T do drugs, was an alcoholic, nor abused in some way, shape, or form (plenty of us here at least... I do smoke pot but I doubt that constitutes me as a drug addict) but for the half it did represent I believe the movie did a great job.

what Blue Iguana attempted to (incorrectly) teach us was that the depressed, drug fueled whores with bad/ broken messed up lives would actually be able to earn decent money as dancers. I haven't seen a 'money shower' since 1999 before the tech meltdown !

I also agree that Natalie Portman's VIP scene from 'Closer' actually conveyed the essence of what most dancers today are thinking ... but Natalie actually got to SAY it to her customer !

Ooooh!!! I wanted to kill that dude when he came in to see her dance. I'm sure he would have hid his wimpyface if hadn't poked her YET....The fricking poseur poet-artist- soul-baring is OK, but breast-baring is NOT.

Some of the brilliant dialogue in the VIP from CLOSER....
    [as Alice strips for Larry]
Larry: Are you flirting with me?
    Alice: Maybe.
Larry: Are you allowed to flirt with me?
    Alice: Sure.
    Larry: Really?
Alice: No, I'm not. I'm breaking all the rules.
    Larry: You're mocking me!
Alice: Yes, I'm allowed to flirt.

Larry: I want you to tell me your name. Please.
    [throws down a note]
Alice: Thank you. My name is Jane.
    Larry: Your real name.
    [throws down another note]
Alice: Thank you. My real name is Jane.
    Larry: Careful.
    [throws down another note]
    Alice: Thank you. Still Jane.
Larry: I've about got another 500 quid here. Why don't I just give you all this money, and you tell me what your real name is, Alice.
[throws down the rest of his money]
    Alice: I promise.
[picks up some of the money]
Alice: Thank you. My real name... is plain... Jane Jones.

The way Portman delivered her lines in that cool confident and controlled yet very feminine way was mesmerizing!

As for Blue Iguana I enjoyed it but found it hard to follow in parts...made me wonder if that is an example of a cross section of dancers in or around Los Angeles.

I'm watching "Dancing at the Blue Iguana" now. I have to say that in the 11 years (on and off) of dancing, this movie accurately protrays some of the dancers I have met in my career. I have seen so many of the Darryl Hannah characters and I identify most with Sandra Oh's character. I had almost the same scenario, except I wasn't a poet. It could even be a better movie if it portrayed more different characters, such as one's portraying strippers in a positive light and if they eleborated more on the characters.
My favorite character is Jo. Jennifer Tilly is excellent. I love the scene when she's at the clinic and starts yelling at the pregnant woman about how some of us that "don't have perfect lives still have reproductive organs!" LOL

It's hard for me to sit still through some movies, and this was one of them. I thought that the pot head character was funny and I've seen her in lots of dancers I've met. I wish, like others here, that they'd have a regular non drinking, non drugging, college student that didn't do extras that just wanted to get through college with out a mental breakdown over money. Is that too much to ask? Yes.

Ok, I've commented on this movie before, but I really liked it so I will again.

First, most of the lines in the film were improved. So a lot of the character development was based on ther actresses' own stereotyped view of strippers.

Sheila Kelly's character was my least favorite. I am presuming, or hoping, that the guy (I usually really like this actor) wasn't technically her brother, but possibly a step-brother or a childhood family friend. I have seen many over-the-hill depressed dancers like her though....

I also believe the "$100 blowjob" was simply one of those techniques that "connected" the plots. I don't know what its called. Yek, perhaps you know?

Unfortunately I have seen the young girl supporting her musician stereotype way too much,. This is really why I urge girls that are 18-21 NOT to start stripping yet. I know that the money potential is huge at that age, but few girls just starting on their own can handle it. And yes, there are many exceptions here on SW but not in my real world experience.

I really related the most to Sandra O's character because she seemed like a bright girl stripping for the money. But she had such a sadness to her that I recall feeling. No matter how much I enjoyed the power and the money, there is always the internalization of the judgement that others felt.

CLOSER: I loved every second of that scene. Its not that realistic though, in that most men these days wouldn't throw that much money down just to find out a name. But when Clive asks her what her cunt tastes like...omifuckingod! I would have so fucked him right there in VIP. That scene makes me moist just thinking about ....I'm gonna find it on Utube and jerk off....

    Masterbation Fodder!

Arrggh!! Just watched it again. When she says she doesn't desire him but looks at him at she does. Now THAT is how a stripper should act! Drive 'em crazy!

Thumbs down Re: Dancing at the Blue Iguana

Ya this movie came on tv last night and I got really sad watching it.. just more "proof" for non-strippers that we are all screwed up idiots who can't do any other line of work. But I have to admit some of the stereotypes were true. Lol. I loved when Sandra O's character went to help Angel set up her apartment and they ended up just sitting around ordering pizza and getting high... and of course, Angel's hideous pink fuzzy clothing items... LOL. Yes, that is how we all dress when we're away from work, isn't it?
I agree with most of you who say they could have at least included a few clean strippers without major issues!! Oh well, then the movie wouldn't have done so well I guess. sigh..

Ha! I just rented this the other day. Wanted to get inspiration from Angel's stage performance...but I remember it being a lot better than it actually was in the movie. I, for the record, won't be falling headfirst into the audience.

Good movie though. Totally reminds me of many L.A. clubs.

I loved Dancing at Blue Iguana and found it fairly realistic, if only because yes, that is totally what dancers look like on stage when they get that fucked up at work. I thought it tapped directly into the desperate/shady/survival vibe of a smaller, divey strip club and was pretty spot-on.

Except for that part where they're all sitting around smoking weed together at the one girl's house. Sorry, but those girls did not seem like they'd be BFF who would comfortably hang out with each other outside of work...

I didn't really like the movie. I rented it with my bf and thought it was boring. I really liked the behind the scenes feature on the DVD. The dancing was fun to watch, not spectacular, but I liked it.

I love how some actresses can judge strippers, but show their tits in their movies. And for those who have a no nudity clause, they still can be all over their co-stars. Making out is WAY more intimate than a lap dance. Of course, it's integral to the plot...

I absolutely hate how they portray so many lousy stereotypes surrounding the girls and their lives..the thing is though, whenever it's on, I can never stop myself from watching it

I liked this movie too. I never expect movies about strippers to be accurate because well they are movies not real life. My favorite character was the one played by Sandra Oh.

I also enjoyed Closer as well but I knew I would before even seeing it since I am a Portman fan from way back when she was a little girl.

I do not plan on seeing the Lohan flick though. She annoys me.

The VIP room scene with Clive Owen is fucking brilliant. He's doing everything he can to degrade her, but he simply can't because she's so comfortable with herself. I love it. One of the best movies of all time.
I loved that movie and you're right, that scene was the shit.
