It's a commercial by the "South Park" guys, extolling the merits of the old-fashioned approach. A guy smacks the rambunctious kids and sternly tells them to settle down and study, and he offers a brochure titled "You Can Either Sit Down or I Can Pop You in the Mouth Again."

That was the method my mama used, and it worked beautifully!

That was from a south park episode in like the 3rd season or something. I laughed my ass off at it then, too! I love those guys.

As a side note, my parents used that "method" to control my strong willed nature. They probably would of had a lot less stress if they just let me be a brat and not freak out over my behavior, though. The corporal punishment just enraged me and made me a real nightmare to be around. I'm sure that my folks must have used the term of "satan's spawn" when refering to me. They just didn't know that if they used guilt, instead of threats of pain, they could have controlled me just fine. I'm very senistive to guilt and consequently I am a very honest person who has a hard time ditching my conscience.

Yeah, right. Every Puerto Rican knows that if you throw a tantrum, you'll get a "chancleta"* to the ass...

*chancleta- bedroom slipper with a hard ass ghetto rubber sole that we got beat with so much it ended up in a U-shape.

The whole medical thing is out of control. I see so many commercials now..."restless leg syndrome", "my mother was a whore syndrome" blah blah. It's just so ridiculous and over the top. Hey, I like macaroni and cheese....does that mean I have "Pastadefromageitis"? PFIZER!!! MAKE ME A PILL!! It's also interesting that all these childhood illnesses suddenly sprouted up when TV became much more prevalent and children could sue their parents for hitting them. I in no way condone actual child abuse, but come on. ARGH.

I think another one is get out of the fucking house and exercise instead nowadays kids are shut in for fear they'll be kidnapped anywhere.

It's so sad they give kids Ritalin. You don't know how many speed users under 30 say they "need speed" because they are Ritalin kids. The chemical compunds are very similar to meth. It IS speed.

Honey on strattera good luck with your speed use. Adderol is another good one to try. You can totally but it on the street. Enjoy.

ADD is a manufactured disease so pharmie companies can create total addicts with really clean, consistent speed. You will keep buying it for the rest of your life until you get clean = lots of money for the richest companies in the world.

actually...strattera is NOT a stimulant or "speed" like ritalin, adderral, dexadrine, etc...

you don't see immediate results for it like you do with the stimulants. I took a good month before i noticed a difference.

I get irritated when people say that this is a "new" disease...it has been recognized for many many years. ritilan has been in used for i think at least 50 years. there is new research that shows that those with adhd/add have a part of their brain that never developed properly. so it's not a "made up" disease.

I have been struggling with it (as does my cousin...it tends to run in families) all of my life. It wasn't until I was pregnant with my 3rd that I started really researching it and FINALLY figured out what the hell was wrong with me. When i went to my doctor to tell her that i TRULY believed (many people just do too much and throw around the "i have add" thing when they can't get it all done) that i have it. She gave me an excellent description of ADD...

She said that everyone has an orchestra in there head..different parts all playing, but the difference with people that have ADD and those that don't is that is those that have it are missing the conductor. Now having been in band for many years, this really struck me and it finally made sense.

Now i KNEW WHY i couldn't focus. I have constant thoughts running at one time. I can't stay focused on one thing for too long before I get completly sidetracked into something else. I even talk that way...I'll be talking about something, then next thing you know in the middle of a sentence another thought will come out and people are like "wtf are you talking about"...see i was "talking" about it in my head and HAD to get it out. Those us that truly have it, are impulsive, cluttered, scatterbrained and have ALWAYS had it..you don't just "get it" as an adult..you had it when you were a kid. If you look at my history over the last five years, you will see that I have run about 5 different businesses, why? because I CAN'T FOCUS ON JUST ONE THING!! Now that I have strattera running through my blood (and believe me, I am normally an "anti" brain altering drug..especially having dealt with rx's as a pharm tech), but I have been off it and then had to start back up again...even my husband knows when I'm off. I can NOT turn my brain off otherwise. I have tried other things (alternatives) but they just don't work for me.

So honestly unless you have it, you can't really truly understand what it's like to not shut your thoughts off...EVER. And you can't tell me "good luck with your speed"...cause YOU DON'T HAVE IT! i'm sorry, but when my impulsiveness (uncontrollable btw), clutterness, messiness etc... get's in the way of my day to day life and my relationship with my husband and kids, if a pill will fix that, then i'm fucking taking it. Try raising a child with the issues that my oldest has and also have add yourself...not a walk in the park.

now i am NOT condoning the use of these drugs in children especially. When i was a pharm technician in a "rich" town, most of the children, especially boys were on these stimulants...it was obviously being misused.

However, if you have never had a child TRULY with adhd, then you can't say shit about anything.

My oldest has adhd and also sensory integration dysfunction and it's all exacerbated by the fact that he is moderately deaf in both ears and wears hearing aids. I will not put him drugs, so I have to deal with his behaviors and issues in other ways. he is about to start Occupational Therapy for his SID. but believe me, there have been days when i wanted to say "fuck it" and put him on drugs....but i won't.

he does NOT sit in front of the tv all day. He is extremely active. kids with adhd don't have the attention span to "sit" in front of a tv all day. They are up and bouncing off the walls for what seems like all day long. (of course, there are different degrees of adhd, so some are worse than others)

This child doesn't sit in front of the tv all day. he is very active. he plays soccer...goes outside every day (i live in a great small neighborhood) with his friends for HOURS...he NEVER stops. he couldn't even sit down to watch a movie till he was close to 7 yrs old! now i see him struggling with the same issues i had in school...mainly reading (of course this is made worse by his hearing loss cause he can't hear the sounds), and it breaks my heart.

so again, unless you have it or a child with ADHD (real adhd, not just not disciplining your kids), you can not understand what it's like.

As an adult with ADHD, I completely understand sassysummer. I had problems in school my entire life because I couldn't concentrate. I got the "bright but does not work to her full potential" on every single report card. Every time. It wasn't until I was an adult and doing my own therapy that I got diagnosed. As an adult I chose not to medicate but to try some (successful) behavior modifications.

I get so angry when people suggest that ADD and ADHD aren't real or that kids just need to "go outside". I grew up out in the country, riding horses, playing outdoors, my dad didn't even have a television. Ever.

True, ADD and ADHD get overdiagnosed but that doesn't make the problem less real for the rest of us who actually have problems.

I also have a mild form of ADD, and my adult life has been a struggle for me in some ways. I've (very) slowly found ways to incorporate behavior modification, but is a long and difficult process. I don't think medication is the magic bullet, either. I know many ADD people that have received great discipline as kids- they are hard working, non-complaining adults. Brats with or without ADD are brats, ADD has nothing to do with it. I had hyperactive ADD as a kid (looking back), but I had great manners because my parents were strict disciplinarians. Just because I have manners doesn't mean I don't have ADD. Being a spoiled and entitled asshole does not equal ADD.

One of the problems with discipline is that you need to start early- when they're babies. You can't start when they're 5, or even as young as 2, and not run into some struggle. A lot of the mis and overdiagnosis of ADD has to do with parents not having control of their kids, and then wanting a pill to fix that problem. Having worked with kids, I can tell a difference between kids that are entitled brats and those that have ADD. They both need structure and discipline, but kids with ADD tend to need a lot more carefully organized and structured environment with emphasis on organization.
Many parents can't be bothered with giving their kids a good environment- they want to make it go away with a pill.

The problem with many people- medical professionals, parents, and those affected- is the desire (which I understand all too well) to take a pill and just make it go away QUICK. FAST. PRONTO. ADD is definitely not one of those problems that can be served *just* by a pill. It takes effort and it takes a lot of it. IMHO, behavior modification is most important- and the pill should be used for those that choose to take it to help make the behavior and environmental modification stick. One of the bigger problems is that behavior mods aren't addressed at all, people receive no real "tools" aside from medication. Instead, they are given a pill and told things will fall into place. It doesn't in a lot of cases.

I started in the last few years to talk with many adults dealing with ADD in RL and also online. I've found that every one of them that feel that they have significantly improved their lives cite support, effort and behavior mods as being paramount- and for some, the drugs do definitely help, but drugs are one of the tools, not the only one.

being rambunctious is the spice of life, godammit. where has all the fun gone? why does everything have to be such a serious condition?

today, for instance, i screamed (not sang), "believe it or not I'M walking on aiiiir, i never thought i could feel so freeeeEEEEEEEE" as we went through the shopping centre carpark. it felt GOOD! (S.O. wound down windows and suggested i direct it outwards)

i don't have ADD as far as i know, i just thought that it's xmas dammit, and i wanted to express myself... greatest american hero style.

as kids, we were sent outside, with balls, toys and dogs to run all the hyperactivity out of us. school with nuns sorted out any shit in the classroom, coz damn, those bitches are terrifying.

i'd never take drugs to weed out my nutso side, it's what separates me from the animals... (except the weasel).

Nautilus, I do that stuff too! I love living in Hollywood mainly because I'm somewhat normal by Hollywood standards. I can burst into "Greatest American Hero" right there on the Boulevard and no one notices because the guy in front of me is cursing out a street sign and the woman behind me is humping a palm tree and squealing orgasmically (no kidding, I've seen this TWICE).

So all you quirky rambunctious types should just move to Hollywood and fit in!
