Depends what you're looking for and what you intend to do here. You can PM me a list of Q's and I'll answer them, if you like.

Pamona? Covina? City of Industry? That's the first time I've ever heard those towns described as "nice." Cheap, yes; nice, not so much. Then again, L.A. is a collection of very diverse communities and each individual has to find their own.

For the record though, those towns are nowhere near a beach and they're also technically not part of L.A.

Near and close are relative terms. I know why Americans have no time... their close is often my too far to go LOL.

LA is pretty big & spread out. There is the valley, the southbay, the westside, midtown, wilshire district, long beach/harbor areas, just to name a few.

When people refer to "L.A", alot of the time they just don't realize how big it really is.

Yeah...because it's also "LA county" correct me if I'm wrong.

I remember when my uncle told me he lives in Orange and I assumed it was a city.

I would tell fellow Californians this...and they would respond and say "Yeah, where in Orange?"

And I said , "What do you mean, where in Orange, in Orange?"

They would respond "Where in Orange?...Ya know, Orange County?"

I'm now confused because I don't know much about California. I also thought to myself, is my uncle(doctor) dumb enough to tell me he lives in a county? Or there's a good chance I misheard him...but I really don't think I did...not on this one.

Low and behold...a city of Orange exists in Orange county and some natives don't even know!

    Then again Cali is HUGE!

^^^ Yeah, there is an Orange, CA. But most people in SoCal just think of Orange County as an entity by itself, which is silly because it includes communities as diverse as Santa Ana and Newport Beach. So a lot of people who live in the more run-down areas will say they live in the OC and hope that people will take that to mean that they live in the nicer part.

Orange County is not very big, but L.A. County is huge. It takes a few hours to drive across it, and it encompasses just about any kind of community you'd want to live in.

When moving to L.A., it's a really good idea to plan out beforehand what kind of community you like, and then ask a local which area would fit that. JettaNyx, do you like a community with a lot of families or mostly adults? Artsy or blue-collar or business or beachy? Lots of chain stores and strip malls or little local indie businesses? What specifically are you looking for?

artsy is good (do plan on gong to art school), not picky about adults or kids, it can be near the beach or away from not picky on that either. i know starting off i'll be in a cheap apartment but i need a pet friendly community (2 cats,1 dog). the rental prices scare me...much higher than anything i've seen in FL or here near charlotte (we moved into a city outside of charlotte that alot of people think of as redneck or ghetto. i live down the street from some projects. hell it looks really nice compaired to FL, you'd never even know what it really is).

I dont want to ask like how much does an average stripper make over there too see if i can take care of $X rent..that depends on where i dance & personality. but that is my bigges concern, that i can make ends meet.

It's very hard to make ends meet out here. That's all I do; I am not getting ahead financially at all (of course, I only dance part-time and my regular career does not pay well). As a stripper I average about $200 a night at mid-level clubs. There are a few two-digit nights here and there, and of course some nights where I make up to $600. But you're not going to be swimming in cash.

Everything is VERY expensive in L.A. - not as bad as NYC or San Francisco, but a damn sight more expensive than Florida or North Carolina. Gas is about $3/gallon right now and a 1-bedroom apartment would run you from $1000-2500 a month depending on the features and location. You can probably find studios a little cheaper but of course there's no space. Make sure you get a place with parking; it's worth the extra money. You don't want to come home from work at 3 a.m., drive around for an hour, and then have to walk ten blocks by yourself with your money and stripper bag. Oh, and don't ever leave anything valuable in your car. They get broken into all the time.

is a good resource for finding apartments and getting an idea of what to expect. If you have any more questions or you need someone to show you around when you get here, PM me anytime!
