    Default Crockpot Dilemma

Okay... maybe this is just the way of a crockpot... but I dont' think so. It seems like EVERYTHING I make in it (from chili to veggie stew to pot roast) kind of tastes the same... This... "crock pot" like taste to it... I can't describe it. I got mine for cheap at target a couple of years ago (although I've always had this problem)... Could that have something to do with it? Do I need something better quality? ...Or, do I just have some anti-crockpot gene?

That's how I always felt whenever my mom wold use the good, old crock pot. No matter what it was, it always tasted the same (kind of). It's kinda hard to explain ....different recipes would taste different, yet kind of similar. I always knew if something was made in a crockpot or on the the stove. You could just tell from the taste.

That is the reason that I am afraid to own and use a crock pot now.

Huh. What's your crock made of? I'm a big fan of crockpot cooking and I use mine often... haven't noticed this. How long are you cooking things in it?

I'm not sure what it could be either.. I make many many things in the crockpot (or as my Mother-In-Law says, "Crotchpot"), and it all tastes different.

    Weird.

it's gotta depend on what you season it with. Try making something with curry and see what happens.

I think it's ceramic? I dunno... It's a Rival Crockpot. I must just suck then because the chili recipe came from my mom (I even called her and reread the recipe to make sure) and it tasted totally different and was much more dried out!

Yek, it depends on what I'm cooking... I just made a beef stew and cooked it on high for four and a half hours.

I LOVE my crockpot. Instead of cooking it on the fast speed, try slow cooking. It brings out all the flavors. Oh, and could you also be using the exact same spices when you cook?

Agreed, cook more slowly. Also make sure that the lid fits snugly; it sounds like some of the liquid might be evaporating out, which you don't want. Personally I like the food better when it cooks on the low setting for 6-8 hours.

Same here. Everything from soups to stews to roasts. Low setting, long cooking.

I'm going to be hauling mine back out once I start the new corporate job on the 8th. I set it before I go to work and when I get home, presto; homecooked meal with minimal fuss.

My pot has a shutoff where it goes right to warm after it finishes the cooking cycle....best thing for a working woman ever invented.

Actually, the lid fits very poorly... it just came that way. Could that be causing the weird taste?

Yes, it could. It needs to hold all the heat in or it doesn't cook right. What kind of taste is it? Slightly burnt? Maybe the liquid is cooking out and so whatever is on the bottom against the heat source is burning. You don't usually need much liquid in a crockpot, but if it's evaporating out of an ill-fitting lid, then it would cause a problem.

I really can't describe it... but it's icky. I have a vat of (very dry) stew in my fridge that I can't bring myself to eat. I think I'm just going to throw it out... along with the crockpot ::sigh::.

I'm so glad the mystery has been solved! It's not me! YAY!!!!

Yeah, it sounds like the ill-fitting lid may be the culprit. The high heat fast cooking time could also have something to do with it. Crockpots rule, especially with a busy family. Put stuff in in the a.m., hit the 10 hour slowcook button, and voila. I'm also a huge fan of those crockpot liners they sell next to all the Ziploc bags at the grocery store. It saves a lot of time on cleanup and soaking the huge pot in the sink etc.

I'm making something in my crockpot now. You guys inspired me.

I like having a vegetable soup on hand. It's very filling and helps when I have a craving to raid the fridge.

Or maybe it's starting to burn out?? Maybe you should just treat yourself to a brand new crockpot

i love my crockpot! i'm sure some of you know what I mean, but there's this tradtional Jewish dish called Cholent. I love it sooooo much. I'm going to make it for shabbos this week, and i'll try out those liner things.....

for anyone curious or interested in making cholent, here's a site:

the vegitarian cholent VI is most like mine, but I don't put brocolli or peppers. The sweet potato is my favorite bit. I also put cubed meat in sometimes. it's a very "throw in w/ev" kind of dish.... you should try it!!!

oh, and a good def. of cholent:

ummm. I know this is kinda off topic, but the issue was already solved, and this is soooo good! (And it can cook forever! just add a cup or 2 of broth or water and let it cook overnight)

I love cholent! I put beer in mine sometimes. Or wine. And always barley! There's something about barley in soup that's just so comforting and delicious!

I love the barley, it makes me feel like home ... I'm gonna try wine in mine, that sounds so good.

hmmm. maybe I'll soak the beans in a red, instead of water..... or is that totally stupid?

Lola, I wouldn't soak beans in wine because the acid would hinder their softening. I just throw a bit of wine or beer into the cholent in place of some or all of the broth.
