Oh gawd, I'm juice fasting as of tomorrow until probably New Year's Eve if I can do it. I'm a wreck. I don't have the courage to turn down my grandma and say "Oma, i just can't digest that stuff"...And now I'm paying for it. IBS SUCKS on the holidays, and why does family get so upset when we turn down food? I'm too easily guilted. And somehow I have to work tomorrow...never has bulimia been so tempting. I bemoan my lack of a gag reflex.

For the first time... ever... I'm not having this problem this year. I started juice fasting a couple of days ago (but not strictly... I eat breakfast). I've lost two pounds!

Emily- do you have a recommended juice fast? I've always wanted to do one but have never found one that appeals to me.

I've written a lot about what I do, but basically if you don't have a juicer...

Pick 100% juice, the less paseurized, the better. I like one that's high fiber (berry) and one green. I drink about 8 oz every time I'm hungry. Lots of water. And if I'm weight training, a scoop of protein powder.

I do it about 3 days, but I'd do it longer I needed it. The first day is the hardest. By day 3 it's easy. Incorporate normal food back in slowly.

You should be drinking and eating vegetables if anything because fruit is high in sugar which is going to cause you to put on weight rather than lose it. Vegetables are MUCH better for you and shed pounds easier when you increase your intake of them. It isn't the smartest way to go about losing a couple pounds either because your body isn't really getting all of the required nutrients daily... seriously look at what you are calling it... a FAST.... nothing you could say could convince me to cut food out of my diet and stick only to liquids.. I need to EAT... lol and if you put on a few pounds you should go about it the correct way with exercise and lots of water... not cutting food out of your diet and only taking in liquids.... woo.. no way jose.... lol

^^ Don't knock it til you've tried it.

There has been a LOT written about the health benefits of a fast. It is a great way to detoxify your body and shed a few pounds at the same time.

By the way, most people don't get near the amount of daily nurtients into their diets that they need, and they are shoveling ungodly amounts of food down the hatch. A proper fast is PACKED with nutrients.

I've fasted for up to thirty days before, and I never felt better than I did during and after it. In fact, I'm starting one today too

    exactly, tampa

If you don't want to do it, don't do it, but don't base your theory on it being bad since fruit has sugar. Fruit is not bad for you! You are not dramatically limiting your number of calories. When I do it, I consume somewhere around 1400 cals per day.

Plus, it's not a diet for the long haul (although some people do it and love it), but the OP said she wanted to look/feel good by Friday.

i agree with the dont knock it til you tried it..
with all we do to our bodies a few days trying different things isnt going to cause permanet damage and it may just work
ive also read juice fasts make people feel really good
yeah fruit has sugar but anything that is natural is so much better than say a fast on processed protein powdered drinks..
everyone ive ever known that grimaces at fasts on anything have never tried it or tried and failed due to lack of will power.. ive yet to find someone that truly tried it and then say oh it will make you sick.. its bad for you ect..
if you feel sick on a fast it isnt because you are dying (unless you are doing it for long periods of time) its your body cleansing.. 2-3 days of drinking pure things can only be good for the body
if it works for you great if you dont like it don't knock it unless youve truly given it a go

I've done body detoxes before but I never have fasted, and even though you are all saying don't knock it... I dunno... I know your body should be cleansed but if you just stay on a healthy diet and not stuff your face silly and keep your water intake at a high level, you shouldn't have to go through a fasting process to get the "junk food" out of your body... or to knock a couple pounds off...I know body detox is awesome and should be done be everyone every now and then, like I said, I've done it and I DID feel more energy and felt better all around, but I kept my food intake up... I just need solid food to be happy I guess...

me too, and sometimes when I juice fast, I snack on plain lettuce just to feel like I'm chewing on something. And if that's not enough, I'll eat an apple. It takes some getting used to.

^^Just a question for a juice fast- how bad is it to just drink the juices you can buy in store? The last time I juice fasted (only lasted three days) I did it with del monte fruit juice boxes. I lost seven pounds (four of which stayed off when I started eating again), and my stomach slimmed down. I don't know if that's a sinful way though. I get a little worried about taking in nothing but fibrous drinks though, because I know that tends to irritate my guts and trap me in the bathroom. That's the problem with irritable digestion and anything that aggressively tends to cleanse the bowels.

There are quite a few veggies that convert into just as much glucose as fruit. Carrots, for example. And, for the record, Emily mentioned berries, which are on the low end of the GI spectrum, not to mention chock full of antioxidants.

The juice fast is a great quick fix for the holiday weight gain...it's not a way of life. And that's what the OP was asking for I think.

I have IBD and fasting always HELPS me. If you juice yourself, just make sure you strain the juice throughly to get the extra fiber out. And it is best to stick with all natural juices with no preservatives... and the only types that you can buy at the store are odwalla, naked, bolthouse, I think. It is really worth the investment in a cheap juicer, if you just want to give it a try.

Ok i researched juice fasting and I found a site explaining how to do it and I wanted to know if this is how you guys go about doing it... I just copied from the site what's written below...

What does a typical juice fast involve?
Proponents of juice fasting suggest it be done during the warmer months of the year only. Spring is thought to be the best time of the year for juice fasting.

Seven or more days before the fast, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, sugar, dairy, wheat, animal meat, fish, and eggs are usually reduced or eliminated from the diet. The diet should consist mainly of organic fruits, vegetables, and beans.

Between 32 and 64 ounces of juice is usually recommended per day. The juice is sipped throughout the day. Typical fruits and vegetables include celery, carrot, kale, cabbage, apple, pineapple, cranberry, spinach, beet, and greens. Citrus fruits are often avoided.

Approximately 6 glasses of room temperature or warm filtered water are often recommended in addition to the juice.

Organic fruits and vegetables are usually recommended. If organic produce isn't available, practitioners suggest peeling the skin off fruits and vegetables or washing vegetables with a non-toxic produce cleaner, usually available at health food stores.

Freshly juiced fruits and vegetables are preferred, but if unavailable, practitioners suggest buying it from the health food store or juice bar as fresh as possible.

Green vegetables and sprouts contain the pigment chlorophyll, which juice proponents believe are especially beneficial during a juice fast.

A combination of fruits and vegetables is recommended.

Variations on the strict juice fast include eating one meal a day in addition to the juice.
Certain fruits and vegetables and their parts should not be juiced, such as the pits of peaches, apricots, cherries, and other fruits, apple seeds, citrus peels, carrot and rhubarb tops, tough skins (such as kiwi, pineapple, mangoes), and bananas and avocados.

    http://altmedicine.about.com/od/deto...ce_fasting.htm

There is the site.. and seriously after reading the side effects.. i will NEVER attempt a liquid fast of any kind...I'm sticking to diet, exercise, and just not stuffing my face.. Eat within reason and moderation and you won't have to worry about those pesky pounds that showed up after turkey day or Xmas. And although certain detox programs are good.. such as a fiber detox... too much can destroy your body. Although you may lose a few pounds, you're also losing nutrients... crazy.. I dunno I guess I'm the cheese standing alone haha.. I'm still against it in a way i suppose.. but oh well... everyone can express their opinion... that's why i love this site :o)

You know, I've been reading your posts and you do not contribute anything meaningful to these conversations. This is not a pro-eating disorder site. We want to be healthy and look good... not starve ourselves or throw up until our teeth rot away. That isn't what most men want to see.

You get the same end result. Illness, multiple health problems, and death.
    Not good.

i agree we shouldnt have so much damage that a fast/juice cleanse is needed but i know science people say 3 meals a day so many calories ect..
but i wonder if that is right for the human body.. in times of old i dont think we had 3 square meals a day.. or a protein/fat/vegetable/dairy all at one sitting
soooo.. i think since we live in this time we eat what feels right but i think the body is meant to go for stretches without foods.... i did read the fasting on water doesnt give the body a break because digestion still takes place and if its just water it can be harder on the body (Gary Null "dull") but juice (if fresh) is full of enzymes and is absorbed by the body right away .. not blending in a blender because you still have all the fruit parts.. so a few days of just stuff your body can absorb .. a good natural cleanse i think cant hurt .. but we all have to do what feels right for us

Are you serious or are you trying to stir the pot?

If you are serious, I BEG you to get some help. You are just adding to the stereotype of screwed up stripper.

More importantly, I fear for your health. There are a few girls around here that suffer/suffered from ED's and they don't need this type of post thrown in their faces so nonchalantly.

^^judging from sophie's past posts, she has a serious issue. And I must say that the way she so "nonchalantly" brings it up, forces me to consider that this could be an attention issue. Just a thought...
